If you paint it you lose the original finish with the little tiny fibers showing. Bead blast and semi clear coat.

Another vote for clear coat. I only cleaned mine with Windex and coated it. All the stamps remained in place.

I agree; no paint....not sure why you'd need to clear coat it either, but whatever. Painting it looses the original look.
