I always spray my parts down with brake parts cleaner to remove any impurities. Here are the valve covers just prior to paint:
I've even taken a propane torch to all metal parts and "burned" or evaporated the fluids, grease, liquids off or out of the pores, cracks, corners, etc.,............wait a while before you do this if you just used lacquer thinner, or contact cleaner...."don't ask me how I know"
