But the three step rods give better fuel metering, why discard that?
R.

Because the Factory three step metering rod found in the Carter AVS will not work with the newer Edelbrock jets

The primary jets that are in the Factory Carter AVS are slightly taller to work with the three step metering rod

Finding original Carter AVS strip kits or zip kits with three step metering rods and the taller jets is next to impossible

Three step metering rod = Taller primary jet
Two step metering rod = Shorter primary jet

Cannot interchange

So its much easier like mentioned before to switch over to the flat covers that are found on the newer Edelbrock carbs , and then use there two step metering rods and jets found in there calibration kits - Very easy to tune this way and jets and metering rods can bee found just about at any jobber or online
