Many consider the Slant Six engine a marvel of automotive engineering. It was introduced for the 1960 model year in the Valiant and mid-size Dodge and Plymouth vehicles. Its nickname was earned from the 30-degree tilt of its cylinder block towards the passenger side of the engine bay, a revolutionary departure from the traditional vertical orientation.

“The year was 1969 and I was growing up in the suburbs of Chicago. One of my best friends came over one day with a brand new 1969 Plymouth Road Runner he had just purchased from Gaines Chrysler Plymouth, a small dealership in Roselle, Illinois,” explains Fred Tonne.

Today, our 1970 Dodge Super Bee receives new front grille inserts, rear window molding, and sail panels from Classic Industries and OER. The grille inserts in this car have been repaired many times after being struck with birds, deteriorated by age, and damaged from people not opening the hood correctly. The original plastic grilles have grown brittle over time, and have faded with sunlight.

Today, one of the retired Chrysler guys chimed-in with an email in reply to someone else going through some of his old stash of stuff - these were emblems in this case, & one of his was an old Scat Bee from a Super Bee. Here's a reply:

Super Bee, Many of us started our post grad career in 1969. Jack Smith. Father of the Roadrunner told the anecdote that as they were heading to release he asked Gene Jacoby, product planning director for Dodge, didn’t he think that Dodge needed something of equal buzz. Gene agreed and the SuperBee was born. Those were great years! All Pontiac could counter with was the “Judge”.

And yes, this is a real email reply! I have certainly never heard this one before!

The Dodge brand recently held a media first drive event for the 2024 Charger Daytona battery electric vehicle, providing opportunities to drive both the R/T and Scat Pack models that are expected to reach dealerships in the next few weeks. This event was based out of Radford Racing School in Chandler, Arizona, so the invited writers could experience the sporty electric vehicle on the road and the track – and it performed beautifully in every situation.

For many considering swapping front end suspension from factory torsion bars and the heavy K-member and stamped control arms to modern tubular arms and coil overs, this one is for you. The weight savings gained by upgrading to a Reilly Motor Sports, Inc. AlterKation tubular coil-over system is demonstrative, shaving pounds from your front end and seconds off of your ET.

Oft forgotten in the violence that is a V8’s valvetrain is the pushrod, a critical and literal link between camshaft and valve, hoisting the latter to let in that precious perfume of gasoline and air. Those running the stock stuff up top have little to worry about as the factory-fit pieces are of proper length, thickness, and diameter.

What makes someone a “car guy?” Now, before answering this rhetorical question, I suppose there are two ways to approach this: How does one become a car guy and what constitutes (or qualifies) one to be identified as a “car guy.” I’ve come to wrestle with both iterations of this question in the wake of my father, Kerry passing away a little over a month and a half ago.
