5.7 Swap Question

5.7 Swap Question - 02/25/23 08:42 PM

Hi, just picked up a 2004 RAM 2500 with a bad engine, fellow says it is locked up. I have a wrecked 2005 RAM 1500 with a good engine. Interchange manuals show them as not being swapable. Wondering if anyone knows what the differences are, and if they can be worked around. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. Jim

It will work. 05 1500 might have MDS (your 2500 does not) or plastic valve covers, leave MDS solenoids in and disconnected and swap your valve covers so you can bolt on your ignition coils.

IIRC trucks didn't get MDS until 2006. The LX platform cars got it in 2005.

If it needs EGR added it takes 5 minutes to drill the passages even with the head on but make sure that #2 exhaust valve is fully closed while drilling so nothing gets in cylinder. Usually the NON EGR heads already have the bolt holes drilled and tapped but it still only takes a few minutes to do that also if it is a problem. I have not paid a whole lot of attention to what years and aplications did or did not have EGR I just add it if I need it and block it if I don't.

The 05 has an EGR valve, the 04 doesn't. I haven't checked on the MDS yet. Thanks for offer on discs, the dealer here in town has been real good on letting me look at his stuff, so I'll pass for now. Jim
