6.4 BGE EGR Delete?

Are there any advantages to deleting the EGR on the truck engines? Just seems like parts to leak and go bad when no other versions of the hemis have them...

Might be a truck thing? I had an 08 Ram that had EGR on the 5.7.

I would delete it if it was up to me. They put soot in the intake tract, leak, make complicated mess under hood, cost MPG... no good reason for them at all. My 6.4 in my 2011 5.7 truck without EGR pulls much better than an actual 6.4 truck, quite a bit more tq, MPG and throttle response but part of that may also be the 5.7 eagle cam and heads.

08 was the last year of them on 5.7s ( I think maybe there were some hybrid durangos that got them in 09) in trucks and cars, they could bleed off cylinder pressure by adjusting cam timing and reduce NOX emissions that way instead.

I just don't know if there is any way around it with the computer. The worst part is only the trucks have they require 2 thousand dollar headers that have a little egr port on the driver's side.

They don't cost MPG they give you MPG...

The problem is you are dealing with a computer controllled engine and O2 sensors. You delete the EGR and you just changed downstream oxygen levels. The computer is going to adjust AFR to compensate.

That's completely wrong, if it was true it would be on every engine by now.

When engines started having Variable Valve Timing this question became 10 times more complicated.

VVT can do a lot of exhaust recirculation on its own.

EGR valves fail a lot (i have replaced 3)

Cooled EGR systems can build up soot deposits until they malfunction.

If you are asking: I intend to not custom reprogram the engine computer but remove the factory EGR valve - that makes answering your question just a guess.

All I will post is that good experiments on the road would prove or disprove whether your fuel economy would improve if you just remove or disable the EGR valve. I am confident I could use my Oztrip computer (from Australia but no longer made) and the Fuel Economy Calculator program from Performance Trends to measure within 2% .

Doing a Type IV TMC/SAE fuel economy test with a minimum of 2 identical trucks also would settle the question.

VVT on a hemi does not do any EGR besides what would happen already because of poor scavenging or overlap that is already built into the cam, it will however reduce dynamic compression pressure by retarding the intake closing point so the piston can't start to build pressure until it has traveled farther up the bore and at the same time it allows the cylinder pressure to work on the piston longer before the ex valve opens and releases the pressure.

If an EGR valve helped MPG they would be on every ICE, they are just there to reduce NOX on engines they otherwise can't get low enough and nothing else.
