Attach points for engine lift?

Attach points for engine lift? - 12/01/21 02:22 AM

Where and how is the best way of attaching a harness/chain for lifting a 5.7 with a cherry picker?
Need to get my new 5.7 out of the crate and on an engine stand.

Thx

If it has the brackets/accessories on the front, there should be a long stud above the water pump just hanging out there by itself. Thats the front attaching point. The other is under the intake. Its a threaded hole in the block, in the "lifter valley" where the mds plugs/solenoids are residing

They do make various lift brackets to hook the back of a head, those 2 intake valley bolts, and a front accessory drive bolt.

I was nervous, but I did lift a core 5.7 with a 727 (dry and no converter) up and out of my Coronet with just the 2 valley bolts and it held. I typically don't do a carb plate, but it felt similar.

I'm fuzzy, so does the intake have to come off for the back of engine attach point?

It took me 2 days to get the motor out of the shipping crate and onto a dolly.
I used the front stud mentioned, and 2 of the transmission bolts for the back.

That most likely won't work when I go to drop it in car.

yes you need to take the intake off to get to the valley bolts. it's plastic so it's easy to damage too with a chain over top.

Here is a shot from my 6.4( if this pic doesn't show i apologize)- the holes i mentioned are also used to anchor the mds harness

Thx, that definitely clears things up.
That RMS lift bracket looks super nice, can't justify $200 for something I'll only use once.
I'll have to McGyver something up with chains and a level loader.

Also saw these, again very nice, but a little pricey

I am amazed that those tiny valley bolt holes could support the weight.

I made one out of some scrap steel when I needed to do the engine swap on the 2004 Durango.
I've made some small changes since these pics were taken.

I changed where the front attaching points are to where it uses the bolt holes where the intake bolts on and another bolt that connects it to the timing cover at the center.

I literally put the tab at the center through the slot that normally has the chain coming out of it on the engine hoist boom.
Since the engine sits so far under the cowl I needed to connect it as low as possible on the engine.
I pulled the engine out of the Durango without taking the hood off.

At one time I think Motion Raceworks sold a lift plate for the G3. I saw them post something recently alluding to the fact that they are about to release a new lineup of G3 stuff so maybe that will come back.

I've always thought and cannot help to cringe when I see someone lift an engine with a carb plate, especially on an aluminum intake,, but its done everyday.

I did use my leveler in that fashion once. But I swapped from car to truck accessory plate on to test fit other things and that doesn't have the stud to mount to in the front. That's when I had to just use the valley bolts.

Having taken log manifolds on and off while in my 69 Coronet - it's a PITA. I wouldn't want these brackets which force you to do the manifold/header R&R in the car.

What thread and length bolts are needed for the valley?
Metric? Was surprised the bolts on front of engine are metric and the trans attach points are SAE

Looks interesting, did you put on diagonally and lift in middle?
Problem is my 5.7 motor doesn’t have a threaded hole on back side off head?
Only thread holes are on front

On that side, I had to use the front. Had to take the tensioner off to do so. The driver side had the threaded hole in the back if i remember correctly.

Neither side of my heads has holes in back, that pic I posted is same for both sides.
Oh well, the search continues...........
