Massive Oil Leak

Massive Oil Leak - 08/20/20 09:39 PM

IMy first post, but I've lurked here and own/owned a bunch of Mopars. Not a mechanic, I am more of a remove replace guy, but I finally have a garage and some room to work.

Recently bought a 5.7 Jeep. The car ran fine when I picked it up and put about 1,500 miles on it. Got it cheap and expected it to be a rat. Seemed to have an oil leak, as it smelled of burning oil and some stuff was covered, but for the 1,500 miles, the level was always fine. Was on a long trip and the car started smelling and the rear window was completely smeared with oil. It was literally pouring out. Luckily, I had been planning to do a change, so I had 2 big jugs of 5w20 in the back. Nursed it home. It seems like it is coming from between the trans and engine, but it is everywhere, including running down the side of the pan. Surprisingly hard to tell where it was coming from because the oil is so new and clean. Initially I figured rear main, but some people are saying that isn't under pressure so it wouldn't come out so fast. The MDS were suggested and that it was probably running down the back of the block. Any other likely culprits?

Anything the guy that sold it to me could have band-aided that might have given up the ghost? I'm sure this car had an oil leak before I bought it, but it lasted a few months and 1,500 miles. I'd have thought it would show up before that. I'm assuming it isn't an easy fix or the guy would have just fixed it, so I am guessing it is something bad that he was able to do some temp fix. Any ideas?

Thanks. .

How does the oil pressure look? Things that can leak are valve covers, intake manifolds, rear main seal. Also, check the oil pressure sending unit. I've seen when those leak a lot of oil when the seal goes bad.
Make sure the crankcase ventilation system isn't clogged. If that is clogged, the internal pressure of the engine will push oil out of every little crack or orifice.
Do you have an oil accumulator setup? If so, check there for leaks. Best thing to do is clean up the engine real good and run it till you see where the leak is coming from.

have had a couple 5.7 in trucks leak from the valve covers,it runs down the side of the engine to the rear&will look like a rear main leak.

if you changed the fasteners that keep the valve covers in place and did not use a large washer with the rubber insert that will cause an oil leak as well.
