oil filter adapter - 12/12/19 02:01 AM

Any idea how to get the oil filter adapter/connector thingy out of a block without damaging it? Not the bot on angled one but the one that screws right in the block and filter screws right onto it. It is threaded on the outside and smooth and round inside.

About half an inch up the oil cooler centre bolt is the hex for a 12mm Allen key to undo it

I am trying to remember why, but I had an issue getting that sucker off. I remember having to use a set of really good vice grips. And, of course, a hammer. Am I off thinking not all of those adapters had the hex key? I will try to dig through my notes.

Mine need some heat from a propane torch before I was able to get it out. I remember it fighting us a bit.

I got 1/2 dozen hemis in the shop with the fitting I am talking about and none have a hex inside them or the flange like in that picture, they are totally round and smooth inside and threaded from one end to the other.

Will a large EZ out work?

Internal cam pipe wrench. Might have to measure to see if there is room for one to fit.

The heat combined with a large easy out did the trick, thanks guys, don't know why I didn't think of those.

No your not off, both of the 03 blocks I have here don't have the hex , the 6.1 I have is an 07 and it had the hex .

I'm putting a 14 BGE block with SRT rotating assembly and cam into an 11 Dodge 1500 with the eagle top end, the BGE block had the bolt on angle adapter thingy.

Mine was a 6.1 as well. Good grips, no heat, and few good hits with a hammer.

The ‘09 I swapped out had the 12 mm hex inside. Went to NAPA and got a set of 1/2” drive impact Allen wrenches and a breaker bar and it came right out.

Ric says the hex started with the change to 22X1.5mm oil filter, they have the Hex the 3/4-16 don't , My 6.1 block was changed over to 22mmx1.5mm...which is why that one has it.

Re: oil filter adapter - 12/13/19 04:49 PM

I used a pipe wrench on the ones I have. These are actually standard thread on the block side so use a Derale one that accepts old school standard thread filters to get a better selection of filters.
