A friendly suggestion while you have it apart is to consider replacing the crankshaft with a forged 6.1 crank or aftermarket crank. The forged 6.4 crankshaft would also probably work, but I would double check. It would be a different stroke while the 6.1 is the same. The stock rods and pistons are the weakest part of the rotating assembly. If you can, I would replace the stock powered metal rods and fragile pistons with forged high quality components. Just my 2 cents.

He'll be fine with the stock 14 parts they are much better then the pre Eagle stuff, I've seen guys put 250shot of NOS to the newer short blocks plus there are afew guys(one post here ) that are boosting the newer eagles to 12lbs no issues unlike the pre Eagles which seem to explode @ 10lbs.When they redesigned the 5.7 they moved the top piston ring down and opened up the top gap , don't know the exact amounts .

Looking forward to seeing how it runs, but I'm curious why that Cam ? it's 556 lift and a 112 lsa ,, should be a good torque cam but with 4500 converter I would think you are giving up some potential .I can tell you from 1st hand experience the SRT NON-Mds cam is worth about 20 Hp over that Inertia VVT cam. Inertia's 212/222 Duration Camshaft (112 LSA) gives the SRT cam a run for it's money,
I swapped out my 392cam and now running their 224/232 @ 50 (.556 lift) in my 09 Ram now, picked up 15hp and 20Tq
similar combo except I have a518 OD trans (and A lot of Check engine lights now) and out weigh you by 1000lbs

I think inertia limits their cam Eagle Cam lifts to .556 because of P to V clearance, would love to see what the 224/232 @50 would do with .574/540 lift

I would spend $68 on a factory 6.4 cam and save the near $1000 on the aftermarket cam. You did say this is a budget build.

I picked up the cam used for a quarter of its new price with limiter and a few other pieces.
I asked Jay Greene about this cam vs a SRT NON-MDS cam (I have one on the shelf) and he said the inertia cam although smaller on paper will make more power.
I went with his advice as he's cammed dozens upon dozens of these 5.7's and tuned hundreds of cars

Its got a 6.4 intake manifold so it should carry the power into the rpm a little but the converter is almost brand new and left over from the last engine, i didnt want to spend to reset it but it should flash to just past peak torque.

I didnt pay much more than that for this cam and wont have to worry about valvetrain harmonics from the MDS lobes

New cams are sub $500 from Comp now

Re: Budget 5.7 Eagle build - 10/07/19 11:49 AM

I recently saw one of those smaller than 392 "JG" cams installed and dyno'd in a 5.7 charger and it didn't make more power than a stock 392 cam fyi. Owner was kicking himself for not just going 392 cam....

at that price it's worth the try...... with the 6.4 Intake you can take advantage of the variable runners to help out that 4500 converter.

I've seen a few of those JG Cams get their a$$ handed to them also.

Now that Comp's lowered their price on the VVT cams it'll be interesting to see what the market follows with.

Which is why he got his lightly used and cheap lol

Re: Budget 5.7 Eagle build - 10/09/19 12:04 AM

I only had the advice of Jay to work with on whether the 209/216 Inertia/Crower would make more power than a non-MDS 6.4 SRT cam. Jay told me the inertia would make more power. He made $$0 from the advice so i took it as face value as genuine advice. Time will tell i guess

Ive seen quite a few people have terrible results with aftermarket cams but they basically all came.down to tuning. Most tuners seem to have no idea about VVT or Dodges nuaral network and simply switch both them off. A buddies cam swapped 300 picked up 65whp switching from 1 tuner to another with a 6.4 with a MMX nsr cam

The VVT trips a lot of people up, Jay has good handle on it, there are a few guys on HP's forum who also have good handle on it. there's a good bit of power there if you can use it right.

Would you happen to have the 6.4 cam part number?

Re: Budget 5.7 Eagle build - 10/23/19 06:21 PM

So far I haven't had that much experience with building GEN III Hemi engines. This Saturday I tested an 07 Charger with a 6.1 based 426 engine. The results were awesome. 485 at the wheels. I have decides to through my hat in the ring. I have already purchased two 6.1 cores, a 4.050 crank, and a set of 6.2 H-Beam rods. Also working on modifications to a set of 5.7 heads. From what I have found these engines are not that complicated. Looks like most of the cylinder head parts interchange with LS Chevrolet components. I will post pics as I make progress. I am also working on a custom intake manifold wink

Update on the cheap cams, apparently chrysler decided we should not get a good deal on cams anymore, I just called and all the part numbers he looked up for 6.4 cams are $300 including the numbers I put up.

Re: Budget 5.7 Eagle build - 10/23/19 09:32 PM

I was very tempted to buy about 20 of them because I had this bad feeling this was going to happen, that would have been a sweet return on my investment. BASS TIRDS!!!

Wow i just checked and even the 419AB mds cam is $195 at Eastcoast.

Lets hope its just a supply restriction that forced the price increase. When the HC blocks were on backorder they doubled the price. When they came off back order the price halved again

Re: Budget 5.7 Eagle build - 12/10/19 10:32 AM

I finally got the car running and to the track.
Crudely set AFR to 12.0 in the tune and with competely stock car spark tables it went 12.05@111 at 3525lbs with 1.68 60 ft with a 2200ft DA 1st run and did the 3hr round trip to the track and home again

Still have alot of tuning left to do hope to find another 20-30 hp once tuned properly

Peak power is currently around 6600 rpm and has a super flat power curve with it only dropping off noticable after 7k. The low end torque from the VVT and dual runner intake is incredible far better than anything ive driven of similar cubes in the LA platform and the previous converter is flashing quite a bit higher than it did previously

Ill keep it updated as I progress in the new year

Re: Budget 5.7 Eagle build - 12/10/19 12:56 PM

That is pretty good, 12.0 is rich rich, try 12.5-13.0 and I am sure it will pick up a tenth or two. Not bad for a first trip!

Re: Budget 5.7 Eagle build - 12/10/19 05:55 PM

Not bad for a first outing. I would think it would pick up quite a bit with tuning. You should be able to improve that 60' time a bunch with the gearing and converter that is in there.

Looking forward to seeing what you can get out of this combo, that 6.4 intake great up to 7k , then it hits a brick ,

Re: Budget 5.7 Eagle build - 12/11/19 08:08 PM

The 6.4 intake definitely does not seem like a restriction on this engine. Ive had it to 7400 rpm a dozen times and it never seems to have the power taper off hard.

I dont plan to spend a whole lot of time on maximising the combo but ill take it to the track a few more times and play with the cam timing once i take a little rear gear out of it

yeah those 4.88s are a bit steep for that combo, either way your making low 400hp from the combo,
