6.4 BGE crate motor with a 274 comp cam - 08/27/19 01:45 PM

What are the thoughts on a 6.4 BGE crate motor with a 274 comp cam VVT locked and a Ritter intake and carb, headers with a XIM ignition? What kind of power would this make? I think it would be a nice streetable 550HP that could live a while what thinks the Moparts crowd?

Back in Jan I was over at my builders place he had a 2018 SRT392 Non MDS Crate engine on the dyno(superflo 901) for some NA intake testing with the stock long block, only mod was locked cam..Peak Hp with the DragPak was 580 @ 6900 , and Tq was 490 at 4700ish. Ritter intake was 570ish at 6900 and Arrow/prefix was high 54X at 6800.
Then came cam testing ,With Comp Cams 274, DP intake, a Get em Garage dual blade Carb ,MSD 6 on 91 oct it did 605 @ 6900 one of the other cams tested Texas Speed NA Stage 4 Camshaft (.582/.582, 226/235@50 117 CL) with the DP and Carb made 585 @ 6600.

I always suspected the 392 SRT with real exhaust and tall style intake would be a shade under 600 HP. The BGE with a cam swap only gives up some compression so it should not be too far down from that.

A stock 392 cam made 580 hp? Where was it installed?

Well we are going to see what the truck motor makes with a 274 comp cam, headers and a Ritter intake. I just bought an engine and the cam it will probably be this winter before I get it done- still working on the other motor but I will try to get this truck motor on the dyno to see what it makes.

Make with mostly stock parts

Locked the cam straight up, for the 580 pull, and then back 2 degrees, I've seen him skip a tooth then move the Phaser back and lock it with machine spacer blocks.

Looking forward to seeing results from a stock 6.4. I'm in the process of putting one in a 71 Cuda without any changes other than a Scat Pack cam, good exhaust, and a rollerized trans.

Any videos? How did it idle?

I’ve read where some people have had issues when using
Non mds lifters on the stock mds 6.4 cam
Causes an low rpm miss on the mds cylinders
Anyone have any insight or experience on this ?

I've done it, no issue. It does have a slightly noticeable idle but it is a pretty big cam especially for a 5.7 MDS or not. If your buying a new 6.4 cam get the non MDS cam if your not going to run MDS.

I read in the post that "Peak Hp with the DragPak was 580". So the stock short block had a DP cam, or it was a stock 392 cam? I didn't think the DP cam would clear without notches in the pistons. Either/or, pretty impressive for mostly stock stuff!

based on ET VS weight or MPH VS weight the 392 cars are pushing at least 500 bone stock with significant gains from intakes, exhausts, tuning, gears... typical bolt on stuff.

It’s amazing what a Gen III can do with such a small cam (20x@.050”?)

I think the 392 SRT cam is around 220@.050 .577 ish lift. Not huge but big enough when you consider the low lift flow allowed from an un-shrouded valve moving away from the cylinder wall as well as a straight shot at the entire back of the valve.

SRT8 392 camshaft is Part # 05037379BC. NON MDS
215/221 @ .050"
.574"/.551" valve lift 1.6 intake/1.65 E ratio
121 LSA
108 ICL
SRT8 392 MDS 05038419AB
@50 Exhaust 215 on 4 lobes for MDS

The SRT392 spec 591/559 , it uses 1.65 as a Intake ratio,Not 1.60

I've been a long time Ford guy , my kid and buddy got me in to these G3s the potential for the G3 is just awesome. My 496 FE makes about 690 hp, my 408 G3 makes about 690 Hp both do it with very similar cam specs.

Got the engine apart cam and lifters swapped, springs and retainers swapped. Locked the cam and replaced the pushrods. Put the Milodon pan on itand trimmed the timing cover it is all back together just waiting for some dyno time to open up.

Great project! Had a chance to hit the dyno yet?

Re: 6.4 BGE crate motor with a 274 comp cam - 01/21/20 12:27 AM

Engine has been together for months just waiting for the dyno to come available. The guy that dynos my stuff just moved his whole shop around. my other engine is on the dyno but he hasn't had time to hit it. I think I may just put this 6.4 back in the car and chassis dyno it. I have 2 cars apart and I want to do the cam swap in my son's charger. I don't want to have 3 cars apart at once.
