NE1 install EPAS yet? Prius unit looks cheap and promising - 01/30/21 05:29 PM

I am curious if anyone has adapted the 04-09 prius EPAS unit to a mopar steering system yet? Their system hooks up with just 3 wires and goes into fail safe mode, so you don't need any sensors from the car. Just wire it up with the box from the car and then get it into the car. If anyone has done it, how do you like it and did/can you use the mopar steering wheel etc.? I am curious of this to get rid of the hydraulic setup and put the a/c compressor where the p.s. pump would have been. Can also use a steering quickener while the steering shaft is being made. I know its Toyota, but one has to use what is available and works the best.

Here is a video from Utube talking about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUoyoeAXEKQ&t=15s

My guess is that default is full assist all the time. That won't be fun at speed.

Actually, it does not give full assist full time in fail safe mode unless you are really cranking on it, the controller still has input from you. This has been tested on Utube as well. If you are really cranking the wheel, its max draw is 20 amps. The thing this video doesn't show is how many amps are drawn during normal turning, just against the stop. The second video is the one they compare it to, the Saturn Vue unit, which can draw 50 amps.

Here is a good video about cutting the prius unit down to what is needed, starts at 2:15. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pw_BsyVOtDI&t=9s

One problem associated with retrofitted EPAS systems is the lack of steering self centering - no matter what amount of caster you have. If you don't have the proper sensors that tell the EPAS system to return to center it just doesn't do it. That was the deal breaker for me.
