Changing strut rod bushings

What is the best way to change strut rod bushings ? What all parts need to be removed? This is a highly detailed (nicely painted) car that I need to be very careful with to avoid/minimize scratching during disassembly and reassembly. 67 Dart.

If i remember correctly the general order of events is to pull the torsion bar out of the lower arm, and then pull the lower arm and strut rod out of the K frame so the bushing will be accessible. Probably have to break a couple ball joints loose to free the lower control arm and unbolt the shock. Basically the whole lower part needs to come loose/out in order to pull the strut rod out of the K frame.

Unbolt the knuckle from the lower ball joint and then you won't have to take the ball joint apart. Just remove the lower control arm and strut as an assembly from the car and then reinstall it as an assembly. It isn't a fun job and it might require a second set of hands to put it back together with the new bushing.

I'm surprised there isn't a way to just remove the strut rod?

You can remove the strut rod, once you've pulled the LCA back far enough.

The strut rod isn't designed to be easily replaced. The engineers assumed it would last a long time, maybe the life of the car. It isn't a scheduled maintenance item so there no reason for it to be easy to replace.

Changing a strut bushings isn't complicated, but it does involve a fair amount of effort. Loosen lower control arm and strut rod nuts, remove t-bar retaining clip, pry between the lower arm and K-frame to push the lower arm and related parts back until strut pulls out of the K. If you need additional space, unbolt lower ball joint from the spindle.
