E-body Extended Rear Bump Stops

E-body Extended Rear Bump Stops - 10/13/19 01:16 AM

I am looking to see if there are any quick off-the-shelf options for extending the rear bump stops on an e-body. I get some slight rubbing on hard bumps when I have four people in the car that I would like to mitigate. With 28.5" tall 295s on a stock well car and lowered right height, it doesn't take too much additional load to get a rub.

I can come up with some extensions, but I wanted to check and see if there was something readily available first.

Thanks!

Looks like the 71 version is an extra 3/8" but bolt hole slightly wider. B-bodies look larger for 440-426, but holes 1" wider

You could also mount a small rubber pad on the axle housing itself. Then you wouldn't have to make any extensions or drill the car for a mount with wider hole spacing. A 3/8" or 1/2" block of rubber could be glued in place.

I had an old can of that rubber dip for tool handles and such. It eventually dried out and solidified into a solid rubber mass. That would work for what you want to do. Make a little form and pour that Plasti-dip stuff inside and let it dry. Then glue it to the axle housing.

How much do you want to extend it? its just a couple self tapping bolts holding it on to the frame. Get hunks of steel or aluminum the thickness you need, drill a couple holes in them, and use longer bolts to space it down. I would think an inch would be enough? 1" x 1" square stock should work. I doubt anything is commercially available. I can make them and ship if you can't do it or get it done locally. The spacer needs to solidly support the bump stop, washers on the ends will result in damaged parts.

Burdar's idea has merit too, but I'd have to look to see if there is room to mount something on the axle where it is needed.
