Torsion bars and sway bars

Torsion bars and sway bars - 10/07/18 08:15 PM

So it looks like im going with a .96 torsion bar for my 1970 charger with a 440. Is there a certain proportion theres supposed to be between the torsion bar and sway bar? If not what would be a good size sway bar for daily driving? Thanks

1 1/8” to 1 1/4” front

Adjustable rear. If you choose to run one

You'll need a good shock with the big torsion bar and anti-sway bar. I recommend Koni shocks but there are some other choices that might work just as well.

Do you have a model Koni you look for? I have old Summit drag shocks on my 'Cuda and it's severely overdamped and the rear rides like a dump truck.

I have that exact set up in my 69 charger 96 T bar with a 1 1/8 Hotchkis sway bar. a 383 with Aluminium heads, intake and radiator. I have the edelbrok shocks I do not like the shocks. love the way car handles. my friend has the same set up with bilstein shocks I am going with them.

Bilstein shocks are good but they cost roughly the same as the Koni shocks and Koni's are adjustable.

Why not Fox shocks? Get your spring rates, sprung and unsprung weights and have them valved to you needs. I am looking at 8-1100 per set of 4. Tim

Because It's seems he's just after mild improved street handling. Custom double adjustable are overkill and for his application probably not cost effective in terms of effect vs dollar spent.

If he was trying to control 1.20+" Torsion bars, going on 100+ mph track days, autocross events, lower profile wide grippy tires, and trying for max handling performance, etc, etc. then a custom double adjustable would make more sense.

iagree Well said.

The relationship is one debated in circle track. More important for this situation is the relationship of the front to rear roll rates.

If the rear becomes too stiff in relative to the front it will have more of a tendency to oversteer. Think fishtailing, especially on a wet downhill curve.
So if you are increasing the rear spring rates, or adding a rear sway bar, then a larger front sway bar, like 1.125" to 1.25" would be in order.

The stiffer the front sway bar, the less independent each wheel is. For street use, with typical all season radials, I wouldn't go too stiff. Try either stock factory or smallest aftermarket sway bar (which may be 1.125"), unless as mentioned above, you're adding a rear bar or stiffer leafs.

Removing wieght on either end of the car has similar effect to installing stiffer springs.
