I restored the cluster, updating the clock and tach myself. I had Jules do the wood grain using a kit from 71TA,(worse one he's ever done) but that was two years ago.
I will probably use the new metal woodgrain kit from BE&A from now on...It's much nicer in my opinion.

I would class it as world famous ! I live in Australia and remember seeing that car on the barrels in "Cars in Barns" websight quit a few years back. And i have a lot of freinds here in Australia who have e-mailed me the same picture of it up on barrels. I am in Australia and would like to think we are part of the world, i have e-mailed Alan about this so he must think it is world famous aswell !

Keep up the good work Alan, the resto is looking great.

Re: BARRELCUDA: MAJOR SET BACK !! Day 5 - 10/05/07 04:51 PM

Ok...I'm quickly running out of energy...I think I have to quit my real job...

Today (day 5) my plan was to installing the engine, transmission, front suspension and front brakes...

That came to a sudden stop when I was assembling the bell housing/clutch.

I used the original flywheel that was in the car three years ago but replaced the scatter shield with the correct dated 513 bell housing....After putting the clutch together I found the starter wouldn't fit...

I quick call the BREWERS confirmed that I was trying to use an aftermarket 11" flywheel instead on the stock 10 1/2 deal.....valuable lesson learned. The correct one is being UPS'd as we speak.

Engine won't go in until next week

Man... that car looks great. It's going to be such a shame when you have to scuff that roof to apply the vinyl top. Personally, I might leave it as is and allow the future owner to make that call. It's not quite as easy to reverse as a microphone in the glovebox and not everyone loves a vinyl top... factory equipped or not. You make most of us look bad Alan. You are running circles around my Bee project...

Awesome job on this thing. When I first saw the BarrelCuda pictures I had that typical car fantasy, you know the one: Road trip to Canada, drive around till you find a blue tarp covering a green car, sitting on some barrels, down in a hole. Then helicopter it home, wash and wax it, and drive it to car shows, taking home the gold. You've certainly burst my bubble with this by finding it first and all. Kudos to you on an excellent job! Love the photos. I consider them reference material. I'm looking forward to seeing them all on your web site when they up the bandwidth allocation.

I certainly would love to help anybody out as far as information goes, but I'm afraid it would take me longer to type (one finger) out a list then it does to restore a car.
Honestly I don't really have an exact order I reapeat, I just like bolting on everything I have pre-finished because it's soo cool to put on nice new parts.

Follow along with these posts and you'll get a prefect idea of the order this particluar project is taking.

...however I very rarely work on cars on the weekend, but in between scrubbin toilets, cutting grass and entertaining two kids, I managed to get in 4 hours in three days

While waiting for the flywheel I turn towards the front end black-out and headlights....These NOS babys were supplied by Bill Rolik

Re: BARRELCUDA: Weekends over BACK 2 WORK - 10/10/07 02:03 AM

Looking great Alan,

To think I spent almost 9 hours rebuilding a pair of KH 4 Piston Calipers for my GTS this weekend. Of course I had to go through my entire stash of 6 calipers to find enough good pistons to build 2 good ones. Sure wish I had a tool for removing those pistons. I have 4 that are fused to the calipers.

I don't know how you do it. It takes me forever to restore parts. Of course I know you are sourcing lots of new and NOS bits. Perhaps my next one I will take your approach.

I sure wish you lived down here. I could use some schooling on your time savers hehehehe.

The brake valve is an original one carefully restored by me.

The Bendix (crimped style) booster was delivered to the assembly line as a unit together with the master cylinder. The complete package was painted completly black at the same time.
I used a real nice clean rustfree, correctly dated power booster and the correct 171 master. Both were sent out to be rebuilt by Jon Stuart Power Brake

This car had a 171 on it when i got it. Can you absolutly prove that they are a 1970 thing only? My car was built Nov. 70 if that matters....

Re: BARRELCUDA: Weekends over BACK 2 WORK - 10/11/07 12:33 AM

In '71 they went with a sort of "one size fits all" disc brake master cylinder p/n 3461176 (B, C,E, and some light trucks). A bodies used an almost identical master cylinder (casting number and bore diameter same). The only exception I know of is the p/n 2944476 which was carried over from '70 for disc brake hemi cars.
The 2229171 casting number is the p/n 2944453 which is '70 e body disc brakes only. You can look on the fender side of the casting of your '9171 for a date code, the upper line will include "9175" which is some sort of assembly line or plant code, and the line below it will be the date code. "9 324" for example would be the 324th day of '69. Anyway, check that number and see if it seems at all close to late summer/early fall of '70 to get an idea of if there is any hint that one could be the original for your car. I've never seen a '171 on a '71 E body, so I doubt any were built with them.
But as they say with Mopars, anything was possible I guess!

I had two original bellhousings here both from 71 cars, (1 a 340 and the other a 440) niether one were completely painted orange. They both had some orange overspray on them.

That is how I decided to restore mine. It may or may not be correct.

I've estimated that shipping parts up here has cost approximatly 30% more then just picking them up in the States.
Each year I go to Carlisle, I spend on average $5K on parts for that very reason.

Re: BARRELCUDA: Day 11 UPDATE ! - 10/12/07 02:52 AM

I have just read the entire post, it's the first time I noticed it. AWESOME!

A famous car? I would say yes! I knew exactly which car was being restored once I saw the pic of it sitting on barrels, and nearly eveyone I know has seen it. I would bet people around the world know about it, too; some of them have even chimed in! That makes it WORLD FAMOUS!

And Alan, don't let the "paint overspray" "brake booster" etc. etc. comments get you down! For crying out loud, guys! Look at what he started with, and what he's done to it! Absolutely amazing! He has the right to do whatever he wants to do!

If anyone wants a car that's a Govier grade, concours correct, Gold Certified, crayon marked, rectally-examined-for-original-1971-gas-smell-from-the-tailpipe, show babied trailer queen piece of "art" that you really can't enjoy .... GO DRAG ONE OUT OF A MUD PIT FROM ON TOP OF 50 GALLON DRUMS YOURSELF, AND BUILD IT YOUR WAY!!

Whew. That feels better....

Personally, I think he's done a great job on a beautiful car that he's going to have a lot of fun driving the wheels off of!

From the way you replied I'm guessing you used the offsets that you weld to the bellhousing to index the Lakewood you did.

You index a factory bell just like you did the Lakewood and use offset dowels to make any needed corrections.

I know it's been three years, but I'm pretty sure that when we were counting out all that cash, you mentioned that if you ever got a hold of the original shaker stuff that you would pass it along..."part of the deal"

What I was mentioning about indexing the bellhousing, is it should be done, even with factory parts.

Maybe Sandy from sandysgarage.com can chime in here. he had a ball getting his aligned right.

Newfie is another term of endearment for the folk from the island. At this time I believe about 68% of Alberta is inhabited by transplanted Newfies.

I think the Newfie who placed the 'Cuda up on barrels should be posthumously commended for his actions. Obviously, he did the best he could.
(Factoid: Fishing boats in Newfoundland are often brought ashore during the off season...and put up on barrels).
For if it were not for this act of preservation, the 'Cuda wouldn't have stood a chance at all, given the extremely corrosive environment it was in.

That being said, the 'Cuda should never have gone to Newfoundland in the first place!
Heck, everything rots there!

The way those cars were built, it was hard to keep them together up here in the rusty northeast seashore areas. I remember seeing 5 year old cars from the era with quarter panels rusted through, fenders with holes in them, etc. Plus, back then not many people considered saving them for the future... so this guy should be commended just for keeping it away from the crusher.

All those solid southern cars now being hauled out of junk yards to be restored would just have been a pile of rust had they been left sitting up here... so just to have kept it in one piece all those years was an accomplishment... the guy certainly doesn't deserve to have his memory crapped on because the car deteriorated.

I agree, most cars are lucky to NOT have some kind of rust around here after 3-5 years and the manufacturers didnt care then and they still dont care. If that car hadnt been on barrels it probably would have been crusher bound like alot of others.

Re: BARRELCUDA: The Stuff U Don't see UPDATE ! - 10/19/07 05:32 PM

Ok...Here we are Day 19....Remember..I don't work on it on the weekends and I work shift work at my other job, so time is limitied every other week ...

Since the last update,
I mounted the rad and added anti-freeze only to find a leaky (cracked) thermostat housing.
I installed all the side windows...
The clutch linkage
The shifter/rods
The exhaust and at last the drivershaft....

All week I've been restoring the original rusted driveshaft because I couldn't find a better one.

I like the results...

My brother in law had a V code 70 Challenger R/T SE,and it had one, when he wrecked the car in 1977,he gave me the exhaust system. It may have been a replacement system, but it wasn't aftermarket,it might have been a Walker OEM replacement.

I use to think that too... When I made the clone 440+6 Cuda convertible that was featured in all the magazines in the early 90's I put an H Pipe on that only to have everybody tell me that they didn't come with one.

The "Perfect 10" 440+6 Cuda doesn't have one

With all that work, couldn't you just leave the undercoating off? I know this is a purist resto, but it seems a shame to spray that crap on the car - especially when the car will probably never be driven much anyway. Someeone could always spray that stuff on in the future if they really wanted it.

you must spray it in,or you will have little dents pop up thru the fender(from stones) and will show on top of the fender,I always lay on heavy there just to make sure the fender is protected

Those are the original grey plastic...I agree they do look bright and shinny in that picture, but I think it's just the camera flash They'll get blasted with undercoating again anyways.....

I am in aw,Your work is incredible and very fast.I now own a 71 Cuda(ex racecar)had a tilt glass nose and all,but I am trying to locate the last of the parts I need to start putting it back together, just a mock up to make sure I have all the parts.A question is about the hood release?I have the release that you have in that pic,but is there supposed to be a secondary catch on the hood?Any help would be great, your pic's have helped me just locating the stuff I have needed.

Yes...There is a secondary hood latch on the hood...the hook type thingmabob.
I just haven't put it on yet because I've been opening and closing the hood so much and it only takes once to forget to "hold it back" and your paint gets pretty scratch in a hurry

Those bezel gaskets are coming.

Is that the rear window defroster thru the speaker setup? Just had a guy ask me to do a bunch of foam gaskets for those. He restores bunches of things like that at a time. Does very nice work like you - not sand blast and hardware store paint restoration.

Ok....
One month exactly has gone by...31 days. I've logged around 60 hours total.
In the early beginning some of you may remember me ranting about how the body shop F-up'd and painted the entire backside of the grill FJ6 green

I've spent nearly 10 hours trying to get it to look like it should....

You gotta love white interior....

What a jigsaw puzzle though.....You can out the interior sail panels on until the vinyl roof trim is on (no access to nut on backside of trim) and with out the rear sail panels, you basically can't do much else in the rear of the interior

I hope to get the roof and glass done this weekend

Re: BARRELCUDA: Green Fish White Gut UPDATE - 11/06/07 03:39 AM

Ilike seeing progress on anyones car, especially when they start out as a rusty terd like that one was...now its beautiful got to give props for that! If I had half of his ambition and time to work on my own stuff everything would be done! Like it or not alan is doing a great job...and just because it was rusted and repaired it doesnt make it any less of a car! Not everyone has the luck to buy a pristine piece nor are all rar and valuable cars in pristine condition. So what if he fixed it with all the right and expensive parts and wants to share...maybe its an ego boost but so is all the people that wallow in their own misery and are just nasty lil cretins on this board! They feel better about themselves when they put somone else down, as they dont have the skill ability or money to build a car that nice...so if you dont like it dont rear the post, its obvious what it is and noone is forcing you to look, read, or comment!

For the love of Dog man, what do you have against that beautiful thing? Honestly, at this point, I'd say that thing is light years better than a brand new one would have been. Give 'em a break homeboy!

No joke. Nothing worse than a self-righteous know it all. This car while more ambitious than most around here might do looks great. I've enjoyed the assembly pics.

I really haven't followed this post, and it's too late to start now, but I'm surprised this car is getting negative remarks. I think it would be hard to find a mopar enthusiast out there who has had computer access the past few years and who DIDN'T see this car in it's rotted state. I'd venture to say it's one of the most well known internet-introduced mopars out there, maybe THE most well know. Some people care, some people don't, but I'd say at least 80% of the people on moparts know OF the car. That don't count for somethin?

Montclaire....

Im guessing you havent followed this thread on his 71 Challenger Vert he's restoring if you think the Barrel Cuda is getting negative remarks, that thing is horrible with them! And he's done such a remarkable job on having the whole body restored.

I think people are just jealous, he's a mopar restorer that is doing a great thing for the mopar community---restoring trashed mopars, isnt hiding a thing and is 100% honest about everything he does and all of his intentions and yet, he still gets bashed---such a shame!

BTW Allan, if i had the money you'd be doing my 70 R/T right now....id love to be able to tell people i had Allan restore it for me!

....this is where all the action is going to happen.....oh yea baby

Unless you are 2ft tall, there's not much action that will take place in that area.

Buy a B-Body: Use the back seat

Buy an E-Body: Rent a room.

If you don't you will just spend the money on stiches & band aids anyway...
fixing all the wounds inflicked by the back edge of the center console

The "New" barrel cuda is looking good...
Someone will get a really nice car... maybe not the same car Ma Mopar built, but a nice one none the less.

Yes...It became known World Wide thanks to web sites like "Cars-in-Barns" and "Cuda1.com" and "Mapleleafmopars".

It had the original Dana, 4spd and six pack. The original block was destroyed by the original owner and replaced under warranty.

Too Much....and Not enough...

So far the investment is well into the six figures...(I was going to post a complete breakdown when finished)

An orange one similar to it sold at auction in Oct 07 for $199,800.00 CDN.

Was that one found on barrels too?
I must have missed it, do you have any pics?

I still think you should have made it into a convertible:

Ya without that roof... the "original car" percentage would have been out of the "whole numbers"

Still it looks good... and he got it back together in short order.

I don't know John, seems like an awful lot of people may know about this car by other means other than Moparts. Does that qualify it as famous yet?

I just think that it's cool that the car had an interesting story and a guy is putting it back together. Out is that erea, you never hear about a mopar body on a barrel, but a body IN a barrel!

Re: BARRELCUDA: THE LAST UPDATE !!!! - 11/07/07 04:43 PM

I love the car, but what is the interesting history? Because it was on barrels and the photo hit the web? I guess.........If it was found in a lean-to it would be just another find with no notoriety.

I bought a V code 70 Shaker limelight Cuda 3 yrs ago with a better history but only needing a fender. I shoulda hit the web with it before ebag got it.
