What a great loss this is for not only the Mopar Faithful but to the whole Motorsports world. Ronnie Sox was a Hero to all of us who bleed Hemi orange, but more so was a class act that will never be matched in the Drag Racing world ever. To those of you have a 4 speed behind that Mighty Mopar engine, do us automatic guys a favor and grab a gear in memory of Mr 4 Speed cause God definately took the best home today. God speed Ronnie cause if anyone can Powershift a 4 speed on streets of Gold he's doing it right now.

Re: Ronnie Sox passes Away - 04/23/06 03:31 AM

Sad news indeed...

I recall my last meeting with him I was in Charlotte NC for a show featuring some of the great racers of the past of both Drag and NASCAR. The show was a bust and was not promoted well however It was a golden opportunity to meet Ronnie and his wife. I think there was a few dozen spectators at the entire event. That was good for me because I got to speak at length with him and his wife for a good long time. He signed a bunch of stuff for me and was very giving of his time. We sat out back of the event on a picnic table and discussed a wide variety of subjects. Truly a magical time. I recalled to him when he signed for me many years ago a flyer/catalog from the Performance car clinics he did for Chrysler.

Re: Ronnie Sox passes Away - 04/23/06 04:21 AM

Just a thought in his remembrance.
I think that the Stick car race at the Nationals should NOW without a doubt happen in his honor.
I think alot of the guy's rowing gears at this race are all going to shed a tear of respect, remembrance and graditude for his teachings.
If any thing, it (The Stick Race) will raise the hairs on every one's arms knowing that Ronnie influenced or maybe invented this lost art of racing.
On another note, Hemi-Fred, How are you doing?

Being from Ronnies hometown, I have a lot of wonderful memories about Ronnie and his brother David and his dad. May God bless his family, Diane, and all of his well wishers as we all struggle to understand our loss. Ronnie had many friends and my heartfelt sympathy goes out to his racing friends with the McCandless family and Buddy Martin especially, and to his close friend Fred Ristagno. Ronnies wish was to be remembered for his efforts to please his fans, and he sure did know how to do just that.

Sitting here stunned...and sniveling like a baby..

I am thankful for the all times I was able to meet Ronnie over the years(most recently at York) but wish he could of gotten that one last ride.... He surely deserved it.

All of us will never be able to thank him enough for what he has contributed to the sport of drag racing.

I will never forget when he let a snot nosed kid (me) sit in his 68 Cuda at Englishtown, and when he was under his pro mod Comet at Norwalk sledge hammering his bent suspension for almost a hour and then winning the event.

Thanks for all the great memories Ronnie...

I emailed him a while back just

I had just completed my first ever trip down
the quarter mile. Here is the response I got:

"Thank you for taking time to send Ronnie get well wishes.
I printed this email down for him to read and he enjoyed
hearing that you took a trip down the quarter mile and was thrilled
and ready to go again.

Ronnie says now you know, there’s nothing like it…

Thanks again for thinking of him.

My deepest sympathy goes to Ronnies family. Ronnie was and will always be my hero. RIP Ronnie Sox you will be greatly missed. I think Ronnie set the bar on how a racer should conduct him or herself on and off the track and few will ever reach that bar. IMO

Re: Ronnie Sox passes Away - 04/23/06 11:54 PM

I thank God I had the oppurtunity to not only work for him,but to become very close friends. My heart is aching today,as it probably is with about all the Mopar family.
I was with Ronnie exactly a week ago and had no idea it would come this soon.
I am building a new IHRA Top/Stock Duster that has ' Sox & Childress' on the doors. We were gonna share the driving. I guess now its just me,but he'll always be with me. I'm gonna miss you Ronnie ! Not only have I lost a hero, but also a very close friend.

Ya'll please say a prayer for his wife and family.

God Bless,

Re: Ronnie Sox passes Away - 04/24/06 12:17 AM

he will be greatly missed. And to think that he thought that he may have been forgotten by the mopar fans. He is, was and will always be a great inspiration to me. I have had the great opportunity to meet him at several mopar events. And as stated above he always had time to talk to us little guys. I used to live for a short time down th road from one of his friends in pine Level North carolina. I had a Mr. Norms six pack super bee that was a retired drag car. Ronnie and the man passed my house one day when the car was outside. They didnt stop, but I knew who was riding shotgun in the truck and I got a thumbs up. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Sox family.

I felt a strange urge to take my R4 440 6BBL out for a drive yesterday evening-today I heard of Ronnie's passing. I didn't know it at the time, but I think it was the best tribute I could muster for a man that I will always look up to and admire. I was bangin' those gears for you, Ron!!

Y'know, I bet he and Jake are having a great time up there!!

My heart goes out to his family in their time of sadness.

Burlington legend Ronnie Sox dies

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By: Bob Sutton
Times-News
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ronnie Sox, a drag racing legend from Burlington, died in Richmond, Va., after a bout with cancer.
Sox, 67, died at 7:55 p.m. Saturday at his home, his wife, Diane Sox, said.
"Ronnie and I were basically on top of the world," Herb McCandless, a former racing teammate, said Sunday night. "I told everybody that Ronnie had the best job in the world and I had the second-best and I didn’t care.
"Just being around him and racing with him every day was just unbelievable. He’s probably one of the most recognizable names in drag racing even though most of it happened in the ‘60s and ‘70s."
Friends said Sox told them last week not to visit anymore because his health was deteriorating. Buddy Martin, who was part of the Sox and Martin team, saw him Thursday.

"It’s not that he didn’t want to hear from the people," Martin said. "I just don’t think he wanted people to see him in that condition. I think he wanted people to see him as he was in the past. He was a proud man, and rightly so. He was just the best out there."
Diane Sox said her husband’s kidneys stopped functioning because of the cancer.
"He died very peacefully and he died at home in his sleep," she said. "He was a trooper. He fought it all the way to the very end."
The racing team of Sox and Martin became popular and dominated in the 1960s and 1970s. Sox did the driving and Martin handled the business end.
Word of the driver’s death was met with sadness on Web site message boards dedicated to the sport. Locally, fans remembered fondly the days when Sox brought recognition to the community.
"When I was in the Navy out on the West Coast, people from San Diego would hear I’m from Burlington and would say, ‘You know Ronnie Sox?’ " said Don Dodson, a long-time fan of Sox and resident of Gibsonville.
On Jan. 30, Sox, in a handwritten letter posted on his Web site, thanked well wishers who supported him through his illness.
"Drag Racing has been just about all my life … nothing feels better than to leave that starting line," he wrote. "… The thing I miss most is my relationship with the fans. It amazes me after all the years the great fan support. It really helps me get through these trying times and I really appreciate all the good words and letters."
The National Hot Rod Association rated Sox as the No. 15 greatest driver of all time. In that ranking, he was considered the best four-speed driver ever.
"None of it would have ever happened without Ronnie because he was the driver to get the recognition and he got it started," McCandless said. "Ronnie was known everywhere in the country."
Dean Sox said his father helped develop one of the biggest racing operations on the East Coast, headquartered in Burlington.
"We owe all this to him," Dean Sox said. "What he and Buddy did for that sport. And he never got caught up in the hype."
SOX AND MARTIN WERE
together from 1963-80, minus a few years, and again periodically into the 1990s. After that, Sox competed in exhibitions.
The duo forged a relationship with Chrysler.
"We were winning so much at the end of 1971 that NHRA made us carry more weight than the Fords or Chevrolets," Martin said.
"They changed the rules in drag racing because nobody could beat them," Dean Sox said.
His prominence crossed into other areas of motor sports. His spirits were lifted a couple of weeks ago by a telephone call from stock-car legend Richard Petty, his son said.
Dean Sox, who was crew chief for his father in 1981, said he has a 1973 replica Duster that he hopes to take to car shows to help keep the memory of his father in fans’ minds.
His father’s accomplishments were countless, including: A member of six drag racing Hall of Fames; a five-time world champion and threetime runner-up; a member of the 1964 U.S. drag racing team in international competition; on the cover of the first issue of Super Stock magazine in 1964; and a 1972 White House meeting with President Richard Nixon.
EARLIER THIS MONTH at a drag racing car show in Las Vegas, there were 23 poster prints of Sox and Martin auctioned off and, coupled with special copies, raised $60,000 for the American Cancer Society. Sox communicated to the crowd on the public address system via speakerphone.
"(The money) couldn’t help Ronnie, but maybe we can help somebody else in Ronnie’s name," McCandless said.
His last known public appearance came earlier this year at a car show in Greensboro.
"His fans were definitely what kept him going," Diane Sox said. "They kept him going like no tomorrow. We used to get 50 or 60 e-mails a day, cards and letters. That just made his day."
Sox had a personality that connected with fans of all types, McCandless said.
"In the pit areas, we never roped our cars off," he said. "It was the best racing team in the country at the time, but they never treated people any different. The fans just never forget it because you take five minutes of time and give it to them."
In 2002, Sox was honored with a Distinguished Service in Sports Award as presented by the Sports Development Council in Alamance County.
"He was an icon," Dodson said. "People of this town, everybody thought the world of him."
FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS
are incomplete. Diane Sox said she intends to have a visitation this week in Richmond, followed by two days of visitation and a memorial service in Burlington.
Diane Sox said survivors include his father, Willard Miloe Sox of Burlington; sons Dean Sox and Jeff Sox of Mt. Olive; son Mike Page of Mebane; daughter Rhonda Poleo of Alamance County; and brothers Tommy Sox and David Sox and sister Sandra Binkley, all of Alamance County.

Re: Ronnie Sox passes Away - 04/24/06 07:23 PM

I guess it goes without saying how much Ronnie influenced me.

The one thing I will never forget was at the 1993 Monster Mopar Weekend in St. Louis. Ronnie was racing his '68 S/S Cuda there and broke the car early in the weekend. He came looking for me and asked if I had brought the Superbird to the event as he needed something to race and as luck would have it, I hadn't. I was totally flattered that Ronnis Sox wanted to race my car and totally devastated that I didn't bring it with me that weekend.

Ronnie autographed the inside of the decklid in St. Louis in 2000 and autographed the dash above the glove box door last year at York.

They had a moment of silence for Ronnie at the Beech Bend Chrysler Classic yesterday. R.I.P. Ronnie, you will be missed.

Re: Ronnie Sox passes Away - 04/25/06 01:36 AM

Like so many others here, Ronnie was one of my childhood heros. I used to love going to school (6th grade) and gloating over his victories over the weekend. I got to meet he and Buddy and tour his facilty at the grand opening. I treasured that autographed picture for many years. I was hoping to meet him again at some mopar event and tell him what an influence he was and is. I am sad for his family, friends, and fans. The dash between those numbers in his obituary is filled with so many memories. Ronnie - You will be missed! RIP.

Here's his Obituary from the local paper I believe

Ronnie Sox's Obituary
Posted By: cudajoe

Re: Ronnie Sox passes Away - 04/25/06 07:28 PM

I got the e-mail from Hemi Fred, and it hit me because I had just read his note in MCG.

I meet Ronnie quite a few times and I was always amazed at how congienal he was with his time to his fans. He also commented how odd it was that people remembered him after all these years. His humility demanded that he remember himself as a blue collar race car driver and to us he was a legend.

My Prays are with his family and I can't help but believe that God has him running the heck out of a Super Stock 71 Cuda shifting like lightning and pain free again.

I am even more seriously thinking about painting my Duster in Sox and Martin colors....

Re: Ronnie Sox passes Away - 04/26/06 05:09 AM

It was tough to read all of these. I'm actually laying in bed on my computer now with tears down my cheeks. The emotions of everything hasn't hit me till just now. The impact ronnie had on my life is beyond anyone's comprehension. Without ronnie, myself nor any member of my family would be where we are. Had he not given my dad a shot at driving one of his cars, who knows how things would have been for us. Ronnie and my father spent more time together between late 69-72 than most people spend with their families. I can't express what I feel right now. While I was never close to ronnie personally, his impact on me will never be forgotten.

I really don't know what to say at this point. I never thought it would hit me this hard emotionally. I know his family and close friends, my father especially, really appreciate the good words.

RIP Ronnie, you will be missed. Much credit goes to SS/A racer Bob Reed for making some of Ronnie's last several years on earth enjoyable. Bob owned and built the S&M Barracuda that Ronnie drove at recent Mopar events in match races against Reed's Barracuda. I'd like to thank Bob for helping Ronnie enjoy what he loved and for the good shows they put on banging gears down the track.

This is a picture of a very healthy and alive Terry Lee Earwood and Sox. If you do not know who Terry Lee Earwood is... perhaps lets go back to 1973 when Terry won the US Nats in SS in a 1971(originally a 1970 HCC 4 spd) Hemi Cuda Conv. 4 speed... a real one.. Confirmed... yes, confirmed... Terry is announcing his Southern Hall of fame at this Banquet just last year... GOD SPEED RONNIE SOX!!!!! Tears...

How do I post a pic?
