B body rear in an E body

B body rear in an E body - 07/09/09 12:47 AM

I bought a challenger with a weird shackle issue, the shackles have been moved inboard to the frame with one long bolt. Not safe.

Turns out the reason is because I have a B body rear housing in the car. So the spring seats in one inch per side is the cause.

Could I keep the B body rear and use the mopar E-body offset front hangers and rear shackles??

Re: B body rear in an E body - 07/09/09 12:52 AM

i think dr diff makes hangars and shackles for just that purpose.

Re: B body rear in an E body - 07/09/09 12:56 AM

Nope!
You got two options...use "a" body springs or super stocks with the matching offset front and bent rear shackles,
OR get the hangers/shackles for this application(still using your springs) from Doctor Diff.
It is kind of a neat setup, I use it on two of my four challs, you can run a 10" rim and a 275/60/15 inside the wells easily.
No cause for alarm. If you really don't wanna go that route, dig up a stock width Chall housing and axles(8&3/4 I assume)and put your brakes/carrier/u bolts on and scrounge up or buy the stock Chall hangers/shackles.

Re: B body rear in an E body - 07/09/09 01:03 AM

I didn't realize that the Mopar offset stuff was for SS springs.

Whats the benefit of running the B body rear?? I suppose you get to move your springs in 1" per side without welding but then you have to run a wheel with an offset.

I'm trying to decide if I should get Cass's parts and keep my axle or just find an ebody rear.

(Wish I didn't give the last one I had away for free).

Re: B body rear in an E body - 07/09/09 01:38 AM

I used the A body offset hangers for the front as well. The ones for the B-E bodies are for the S/S springs so they are longer (shorter front spring section on the S/S springs) I made and moved in my rear frame rails to make them parallel to help with roll induced oversteer (toe change) But I have heard great things about Dr-Diff's rear offset shackles. My vote is do NOT get rid of the B-body rear and just enjoy some 295/50 15's under there.

Besides most thing's E-body are overpriced...

Re: B body rear in an E body - 07/09/09 03:33 AM

Curt gave the third and cheapest option....Buy the A-body offset hangers and the offset shackles....that will allow you to run a B-body rear in a E-body with E-body springs. Thats what I ran for awhile.

Call-Doctor Diff...he make's his own kit and can set you up with everything you need as well.

Re: B body rear in an E body - 07/09/09 01:31 PM

I see, the Mopar E-body offsets are for SS springs but the Mopar A body offset hangers are essentially stock spring E-body offset hangers also?

I happened to already buy the Mopar E-body offset hangers and the offset rear shackles thinking I could fix it without really knowing the full story. Didn't realize they are for SS springs.

I'm guessing I cant just redrill the offset E hangers to work with the longer front segment because of a funky bend??

Anybody have Cass's contact info? His PM box is full.

Perhaps if you've come this far, you are willing to come a little further....Get Cass's kit, some Caltracs with their split monoleafs, and a FirmFeel rear swaybar and you'll be happy indead!

Why can't you just drill another hole further back on the Mopar offset hangers to allow the use of stock springs?

Car already has the sway bar but newer leafs so I'd keep those.

I think I am going to stick with the B rear. Just need to order up the stuff from Cass. Hope he's got it in stock.

Re: B body rear in an E body - 07/13/09 05:23 PM

What are people running out back with the B-body rear??

I'd like to go with a 10" wide rim but what backspace do I need??

I am not sure I want a 275/60. I'd rather put a little lower profile tire back there but make it wide.

Re: B body rear in an E body - 07/13/09 05:54 PM

I've got a B body Dana in my sig car and I'm running 255/50/16's on 9 inch rims with some room to spare.

5.5" BS on 10" wheel with a 68-70 b-body rear
5" BS on a 10" wheel with earlier b-body rear.

I have 5.25" BS on 9.5" wheel with 275/50/17 tires. I have a dana out a 69 b-body.

My axle measures 44" perch to perch. Is that a 68-70 B rear?

I think all b-body is a 44" perch to perch.
Found this in the tech archives
Flamge to flange width for b-body
'65-'67= 54 1/4"
'68-'70= 54 15/16"
The earlier rears are about 3/4" shorter.

Re: B body rear in an E body - 07/14/09 11:56 AM

I have the 67 B body rear in my Cuda with the Dr Diff Relocation and stock springs
More Tire clearance to the springs is one advantage.

71-74 B-BODY IS NOT THE SAME IS 47 perch to perch. AND 70-74 EBODY IS 46 perch to perch.

Yes, the 71-4 b-body is wider. I was only referring to the ealier b-body rears. Should of clarified that. Thank you.

Re: B body rear in an E body - 07/14/09 01:22 PM

I'll have to pull the wheels off to measure flange to flange but I'd guess it the 68-70 B rear as the wheels don't look "wrong" on the car as it sits now, just tucked in a little more than they should when you are looking for it.

Re: B body rear in an E body - 07/21/09 11:46 PM

OK, I got the Dr Diff kit in and installed. Nice pieces.

One problem now. The rear sway bar doesn't line up any longer. The end links are at too much of an extreme angle. And even if I was to keep the Ebody bar I imagine it would now be in the way of a wide tire.

What are my options?? Is there a B-body rear bar that will bolt in and line up??

Can I section the bar, remove 2 inches out of the middle and weld it back together with a steel tube in the middle?

Re: B body rear in an E body - 07/22/09 01:31 AM

I assume you have a stock E-body rear sway bar.

I would talk to Dick Ross at Firm Feel. I think his '68-'70 B-body bar will bolt to your existing brackets.

Let us know what you come up with the sway bar and please post pics of the rear end and rims/tires under your car.
I'm going to be doing the B body rear swap into the wife's Challenger soon.
I already have Dr. Diff's kit and plan to try to stuff a 15x10 wheel under the car with 5.75" backspacing using a 1/4" wheel spacer.
Tires are going to be 325/50-15 BFG Drag radials.

Well it will be a while before wider tires get on. I bought the kit primarily because the car came with a B rear with some cobbled shackles and I liked the option of bigger tires in teh future as opposed to putting an E-rear back in.

Re: B body rear in an E body - 09/03/09 01:50 PM

Well its time to make the call and order some rear wheels with drag radials so I can make a couple events before the end of the season.

5" BS on a 10" wheel with earlier b-body rear.

I took a accurate measurement of the rear, drum face to drum face. Looks like I have a 65-67 rear as the measurement was exactly 59.5"

I have 15x8 rallyes with 4.5" backspace now and have 3/4" clearance between the leaf and sidewall. So it looks like whatever I choose can have no more than 5" of BS like was said.

Decisions, decisions.

Re: B body rear in an E body - 09/03/09 07:40 PM

I've been thinking of this for a while myself since I am going to narrow my Bees rear, I thought I'd swap B&E rears and just chop up the E body rear for the B body. I'm glad I read this... I never really thought about the rear sway bar not working.

I might just relocate the perches on the e body rear with Dr. Diff's kit and add rim width on the back side instead of swapping rears.

To fix the sway bar I simply removed the bar & took it to the press,, I bent the arms inward 3/4" per side.. Easy to do, it's caused no problems & never has rubbed...

Just like a cylinder shop press or what? How would you rig it up to get it to do what you wanted?

All you do is put the bar so one arm & the main length of the bar sit in the throat of the press, I used a piece of 1/2" flat stock as an adapter between the ram & the "V" created by the bar & simply press... The arm will bend, thats how they bent it it the first place... It's spring steel so it tries to spring back but the press will excede the springs ability & it will bend... I took a measurement before I started then when one arm is in 3/4" flip the bar & do it again...

The height is 1/10" shorter. And the width should be 2" wider. Essentially the same tire dynamic as a 275/60R15 is for an 8", so I imagine yes. I priced the 325/50 today looking for a BFG radial TA and they apparently don't make them in that size??? They do make a BFG g-force drag radial in that size.

I may get the offset hangers and an extra couple of wheels for some drag radials... But I like the way my TAs look so I'll probably stay with the 8" for my typical use...

Probably not going to be everybodies cup of tea, but heres what I ended up with. Member Cudazappa had these nearby and they are perfect for my non-stock setup.

I'm real happy with the end result.

Rears are 18x10 with 5" BS with 285/40's. Fronts are 17x8's with 4.5" BS and 235/50's. Fronts rub a bit, hopefully a couple cranks of the T-bars fix it.

I bought it over a month ago and have been busy changing things I didn't like and fixing things that were pretty unsafe. Its got a 380hp crate 360, fresh close ratio 4 speed, 3.90 sure grip. Front sway bar and will have the rear soon. Subframe connectors, 11.75" front disks, manual alum master. Its a fun car to drive. I'm chasing an oil leak down but its good to get back into a driver.

Nice wheels...what are they...Boyds" Smoothies?

I'm looking to do almost exactly what you've done...I was thinking of going with 20x10s in the rear and 18x8s in the front but am steering towards your set up after seeing your pictures.

Do you have any pics of the clearance space between the leafs and tires & tire to rear wheel well?

Thanks
