This is absolutely terrible. How could life be so cruel. There is truly a void in our hobby and for many of us locally here.

Gary was a great person. On this board and wherever you may have met him. I've personally known him since about 1999 and have always been impressed with his vibrant personality and the large number of friends he had. He always had something interesting to say. And he was a truly generous and caring person.

I just can't believe it's true.

What a shock to see first thing on Thursday morning. He will certainly be missed. Gary *was* Moparts to a lot of us. My prayers will certainly be with his family.

Edit 05/14/04:

I think that nearly 500 replies from people, most from people who are basically total strangers, and almost 7500 views in 24 hours, speaks UNCOUNTABLE VOLUMES about the character of a man. A guy only has to consider that if the death of one man elicits such an outpouring of heartbreak and sadness from people who only had a small glimpse of him, how much deeper does the saddness/anguish run for those that knew him on a much deeper level? I dare not try to even imagine, the glimpse was far more than I could handle.

This is SO sad.

Though I'm a member here, I don't post often.
But I, like so many other Mopar fanatics, am on this site daily. I love all the topics and banter.

Most of all, I appreciate the community here. You all do mean alot. Gary added knowledge and a sense of humor to this community. I remember being personally thrilled when his Challenger made the cover of Mopar Muscle. I also remember a whole thread of congratulations from everyone. You don't have to meet someone face-to-face to become friends.

My condolences go out to his family. We'll all miss you Gary.

The Mopar parade/cruise would be an awesome statement to be added at the end of what will surely be a huge police procession to the cemetary on the day of his funeral.

If that can't be organized, a mini-show ior fundraiser or something right there in his hometown supported by the Mopar community would be a helluva statement to the guy.

I'm in MO not MI so I don't know enough to organize anything.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/13/04 01:33 PM

This is sad, so very, very sad My son and I finally got to meet Gary in person at last year's Norwalk Chrysler Classic and what a genuine good person Gary was. We had exchanged some PM’s over the past years from everything from boxer dogs to Mopars of course. When my son and I were hanging out at the Moparts BBQ, Gary was who stayed and talked to us the entire time we were there. I went to take a photo of the Moparts banner and Gary Said “We need to get a photo of Christopher, you and your car and the Moparts banner” and proceeded to take a very nice photo of us. I will always cherish this photo and the little time spent with him. God Speed Gary

Here's to you Gary from Christopher and me and the photo through your eyes at Norwalk

Gary was one of the finest individuals I have ever met, a friend and confidant and the loss runs deep. His name is on my resume as a personal reference, that is how strongly I felt about the man.

I live 15 minutes away from Gary's place.
Wish I had gone to visit more often

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/13/04 01:55 PM

I guess I'm supposed to say something but what do I say? The tears haven't stopped flowing since I got the call this morning that my friend OUR friend Gary is gone.

I keep listening to his voice messages and am having a hard time accepting that he won't call again.

My prayers to his dear wife Nikki who is such a sweetheart. It's no wonder the two of them found each other as loving people as they both are. God bless you and your family.

I'm so sorry.

It wasn't long ago that we were at Johns house. I made us all a big breakfast and Gary drove the RR and took me to the parts store then changed my plugs. It's always a habit to give my friends a hug and I'm glad I gave Gary one before I headed back to Indy. I just never knew it would be our last.

This is not happening...

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/13/04 02:00 PM

Words can't decribe how I feel, lost and empty.

They say the good die young though I've never understood why, it surely must be true, as Gary was one of best not only on this board but in life.

God called home a special angle today, I pray that his family can get though this, I can only amagine the pain and lost in there hearts

When tomorrow starts without me

When tomorrow starts without me and Im not there to see
If the sun should rise and find your eyes all fiiled with tears for me
I wish so much you wouldnt cry the way you did today
While thinking of the many things we didnt get to say

I know how much you love me as much I love you
Each time that you think of me know I will miss you too
When tomorrow starts without me try to understand
An angel came and called my name and took me by the hand

As I turned to walk away a tear fell from my eye
For all life I always thought I didnt want to die
I had so much to live for, so much yet to do
It seemed almost impossible that I was leaving all of you

If I could relive yesterday if only for a while
I would say goodbye to all, maybe see you smile
But then I realized that this could never be
For my place in Heaven far above was waiting me

When I thought of worldly things I would might miss come tomorrow
I thought of you and when I did, my heart was fiiled with sorrow
But as I walked though Heavens gate I felt so much at home
God looked down and smiled at me from his great golden throne

Rest in peace my friend

This really hurts.

I really don’t know why…Gary and I never really corresponded, but I felt like I knew him from his posts and his unapologetic shift from the bowtie to the pentastar. Dammit man…I’m gonna miss you.

I think all Moparts members who can should get together and make a showing at his funeral…I think he would’ve liked that, I don’t think anything would make him happier than to know there is a line of Mopars following his casket to the cemetery.

My thoughts go out to his family.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/13/04 02:57 PM

Moparts may in its most basic form be a message board to talk about mopars, but it has grown to be at least to me the embodyment of the Mopar hobby. In the old days, we knew the names Ronnie Sox, and Larry Shepherd and etc. from the magazines, and they were the ones that had the pulling power. They were the ones we read about and thought it would be cool to meet someday and B.S. with. Moparts has pushed those old names by the wayside and introduced a new group of names of people who are as one person noted, the new "heavy hitters." Some are known for what they know about mopars, others for thier character. Gary Davis was known for both.

Even though I never met Gary in person, I feel I know him through his many many posts here. In the old days if I heard a racing great passed away, I would be sad, and feel that the world lost a great racer. When I read that we lost Gary, it downright hurt.

Gary, you and your family will be in our prayers. Rest in Peace.

I think like another posted, Gary never had a bad thing to say about anyone that I can recall from his postings here. That says a lot about someone's character.

I have PM and emailed Gary many times, and he always ended with" if you need anything just ask".
I am sure his family, his community and moparts will miss him dearly.
My condolences to his family and friends.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/13/04 03:32 PM

Dave Dudek called this morning and asked if I had been on Moparts yet today. I had not, and when he told me the sad news, I was stunned. I'm still in shock.

I first met Gary last spring, but I felt like I already knew him from the message boards and the numerous times we had communicated via email and PM. In the two different events where I met him, I found that he was a genuinely nice guy with a great sense of humor. (i'll never forget when he did his "cop trick" - he threw a donut 30 feet in the air and caught it in his mouth, powdered sugar sprayed all over his face) He was interested and concerned with other people, and liked to help. Perhaps that's why he became a Police Officer.
It was also evident from some of his posts here that he was a man of Faith. When death takes such a fine man in the prime of his life, leaving behind a family, it is difficult to understand why God would allow that to happen. He must need him more there than we do here.
He will be missed.

I'm not a deeply religious person but Gary WILL be missed and my condolences go out to his wife and family.. Met him a few times. He turned me on to the painters of his car who then painted mine. Stopped by his house one weekend to meet with some local Moparts members and an out of towner who was in the area and wanted to hook up with some local Moparts members. He recently offered to GIVE me the A/C heater box outta his car because his car was now a "race car". I told him you know thats worth probably $400 or $500. He said "I know. Thats why YOU'LL have to take it out but you can use my tools ".

Great guy!

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/13/04 03:47 PM

Even though I have only been on this board for six months or so, I had read most if not all of Gary's posts. He seemed like a very interesting, and caring person who was an asset to his community. Being a policeman, is one tough job and it take a special kind of heart to keep it all in the right frame of mind. I am sure he enjoyed being a Moparts mod, he helped people in his town and people all over the world too. That is as much as anyone can be asked of.

The world it seems is a little worse for his departure now, but a person like Gary who touched so many lives so far from is own home, will live on in his friend's memories forever.
Peace to his family,

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/13/04 04:34 PM

It does seem so unfair that Gary is gone because of his desire to serve his community.

At the same time, he did have the honor of dying with his boots on.

And all this makes me think you justnever knowwhen it will all be cut short, the things you won't get to do and the people you won't get to say goodbye to one last time.

Life is too short, Maybe I WILL go get "HELL YEAH" Tattooed on my knuckles.

I am in total shock ! I met Gary at the 2001 Nats and what nery nice person he was to my son Tim and I. The first thing he did on such a hot day was offer us a cold water to drink and would not let me pay for it. And to serve the comunity like he did......he will be missed so much as I am very sad to hear of this and pray for his family. My deepest regrets. Ron

BTW, donations are a very thoughtful thing, but I am also thinking of some additional tribute to such a great person... perhaps we can organize a Mopar procession for his send off, one last cruise-in for Gary or something along those lines.

This is a good idea.
Also, when an officer died in Oklahon=ma? a member of Americanrion dot net went to the extreme to get a plaque placed on the hiway. Maybe some one in Mich. can do that.

To ask Linda how she did it, go here;

search for something in the line of 'officer' or 'plaque'

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/13/04 04:42 PM

I don't know what to say. He was a good man, he was a kind man, he was a man who would do anything for anyone if he could help. While I did not meet him personally in my life, we have chatted in the chat room a few times. He was one of the great members here on Moparts. I can only hope that we can find a way to make a tribute to the man which would make him proud.

Rest in Peace

I do not post here very often but I have been a member for some time. I have always been a quite person around people I don't know but I have been out to Gary's house for his Moparts party's and talked to him numerous times at the local swap meets and shows. Gary always made me feel at ease and was a very easy person to talk with. I will truely miss seeing him at the local events.

RIP Gary

I just caught the tail end of the news report on the local news.... seeing his picture on TV and the horrible scene was overwhelming, they said the car that struck his cruiser was going at least 100mph and never braked. What a senseless waste of a great person, friend, cop, and Mopar brother...

Again, my condolences to all his friends and family

I've been in shock all morning - called Chip at work to let him know( a hard thing to do). We held Gary in the highest regards--a man of integrity. We were fortunate to be able to see him at the "Big Bear" the last 2 years during the Nats- a real pleasure to be around! He was truly an ambassador of "northern" hospitality and will be sorely missed.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Well I know he must be pleased with the life he lived.
Think about his relatives and try to enjoy every day,, mopars or not!

RIP Gary. We have to respect these guys for what they do and as they leave for work realize they may never return home to loved ones & family. The dangers they face, the situations they are involved in is one that many of us would never want to live.
It takes a strong willed and couragous person to accept the duties of a police officer & fireman.

Having been involved in my local Citizens Police academy and been on ride alongs with the officers, you earn a greater respect for these people and at the same time realize, they are just another guy like yourself with the same feelings and hobbies and I think Gary proved that to all of us.
My prayers go out to his family & close friends.
And we all feel the pain of losing a buddy here at Moparts.

The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures
He leadeth me beside still waters
He restoreth my soul
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness
For His name sake
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I will fear no evil
For Thou art with me
Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies
Thou anointest my head with oil
My cup runneth over
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord

I logged in after I got to work this AM and read every post in this string. What a fine, fine tribute to, in my mind, a man who's ID is synonymous with Moparts. I am proud to be a part of a group of people who, tied together by this hobby, care so deeply for each other. True friends and brothers. My condolences go out to each and every one of you who knew this fine man personally or on this board. My prayers go out to his wife and family. The end of Gary's life on this earth brings us to the stark realization about our own mortality. My encouragement goes out to us all, to make every moment count, and to seek out God as a source of peace, comfort and truth.

I believe that sometimes God takes the special ones home early. By the words on this board, it's more than obvious that this man was very, very special.
Love to you all,

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/13/04 06:09 PM

I first met Gary and Nicki when they made a trip to Canada to pick up his car trailer,Since then I felt he was a "best friend" even though distance prevented us from being together as often as some of you who live closer. He and Nicki opened their home to us on many occassions and their generosity was overwhelming.
GARY, you are a truly wonderful human being, I can't say I (in my 53 years)have ever met a finer person , and would consider myself fortunate if I do, again, before I depart this earth.I salute you and pray your journey is one of great rewards for all you accomplished while here on earth.
It is said that behind every great man there is a great woman, and this is so very true when it comes to Gary and Nicki. She is every bit Garys equal when it comes to serving and protecting (she to is an officer)her generosity, kind spirit and attitude are truly what God saw when he matched Gary and Nicki.
My tears won't stop so I must, Gary Rest in Peace, I love ya man!!

If anyone is holding back the words, now is the time to stop and say what you need to say whether it seems to make sense or not.

I am printing this entire thread starting now, and will be going to Gary's house in a few minutes to drop it off, along with a flower arrangement. Hopefully I can gain information on funeral arrangements while there.

Please no use of frowns or other graemlins, those will not be printed. Only the name/location info and what you had to say. Please use real words however sad you may be right now.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/13/04 07:52 PM

Thru Teary eyes and a Heavy Heart I will try to put here what I e-mailed the local paper.

The Officer, (Gary Davis), killed on I-75 this morning is not just an Officer, he is my Friend.
I live in St. Petersburg, FL and Gary not only touched my life in a way that I can't even begin to describe right now, as well as many others.
Gary is a man that was as genuine and sincere a person as I have ever met in my life.
Gary was a man that gave! He gave to friends and strangers both. Gary had a way of conveying that he was not just speaking to you, he cared for you and that was his reason for taking the time to speak.

Gary is going to be missed by his Family and close friends as well as his extended family on his favorite website, Moparts.Com

Gary has touched my life and I know so many others that we will never know about.

I want ALL of MI to know that they lost a Very Good Officer and a Very Fine Person!
Gary had a love for Cars but, His love for his Wife, Family and his Job was far greater!

I want everyone to know, this is NOT Just another Faceless Tragedy!
This was Gary Davis, My Friend
Some how I know that in Heaven, Gary will Protect and Serve from above.

God's Speed Gary

Sincerely,
Chuck West

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/13/04 08:04 PM

Well I finally got home to a computer. I have been a mess all day. I called OneBad today after I heard about the accident and he heard nothing but called me later to tell me the news. Then my wife called telling me the same thing. He will be truly missed by me and my family. I have known him for only a year but in that time he pushed me in the right direction on who or what to do to my car. He gave me a ticket to the Nats when I thought that I could't afford to go. My little girl thinks the world of him also. All I know is I drive that section of 75 every day and it will be hard for me to do that now without crying my eyes out. Rest In Peace my friend You will be missed very much.

We did indeed lose a friend and a member..a very great and loyal member to both moparts and his community. I have not met Gary, but i looked up to him after his car in Mopar Muscle because I plan on going into law enforcement and have my very own 73 challenger. I will be contributing at the Atlantic Nats. I was looking forward to the next Moparty as well to meet him personally. IT is truly a shame to lose such an individual as Gary. I offer my most sincere condolunces to his family. I have read every post, and now I am at a loss for words. Remember: UNLAWFL Mike

I am very saddened also, although I just knew him through postings here, it was apparent he was a special man and a pillar on moparts and in the mopar community.

He had a way of building up people and bringing them together like no other on the board here.

I hope we can all look to him as an example and be a little more like him in that way, that would be one way to truly honor Gary, er "Unlawfl".

My heart hangs heavy for the loss of Gary. I had the pleasure of meeting him and he and I just sitting in the stand together watching the racing at Milan and this was the first time I ever met the man. The last two year I had a chance to hang out with him a few more times. He was a man of many kinds words and would always help anyone in need. I don't know how to say good bye to Gary only I will see you in heaven my friend. My deepest of prayers go out to his wife and family I cannot imagine the loss they feel. May god give you the strength to know he is in a better place. Take care my freind.....

I will also leave a note directing Nicki or anyone in the family interested in reading this to stop by moparts.org and go to the general board.

Condolences to his immediate family and to his family here , he will be missed .

I never had the opportunity to speak to or meet Gary... I have always enjoyed reading his knowledgable posts on here. With over 4000 posts to his name it is not hard to see he was dedicated to this hobby and his friends. When his car made it into Mopar Muscle I tore it out and hung it up on my wall. I have always admired that Challenger since it was on the cover of the magazine! I wish I got to know Gary like so many of you did. It is times like this that we should reach out to our loved ones and tell them how much we care.

To his family and friends on Moparts and in real life please accept our deepest sympathy for your loss, Gary Davis will always be remembered.

He brought something very special to this Mopar hobby and every time I dropped a tenth I couldn't wait to tell Gary. He will be missed and racing won't be the same w/o him.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/13/04 09:33 PM

Why did it have to happen to him. He was Mopart's!
I always enjoyed reading his posts. 2 years ago I got a ticket at the dream cruise just before I picked up some mufflers from Doug (Chargermd). He didn't know me at all but he posted to me "Want to see those points disappear" Then he went out of his way to contact the officer that issued the ticket to let it go. I still can't believe this happened.
My prayers go out to his wife and family.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/13/04 09:44 PM

It breaks my heart knowing that I'll never be able to see our buddy Gary again. He was one of the first people I ever met on Moparts. From day one I knew this guy was someone I wanted to be friends with. We always had a great time together, whether it was with the cars, at the track, dinner with the wives or when he'd come watch my band. He was probably the biggest fan my band had. I remember our first gig, when we finished our set, Gary rushed up to the stage & gave me the biggest "That was AWESOME!!" Except for maybe 2 or 3 gigs, he never missed one. Even on days he was scheduled to work, he made time. That meant so much. He'd call me up sometimes, just to let me know he was listening to my band's CD. There will always be a little sadness with every gig my band plays in the future. There will be an empty spot in the audience where Gary should be standing. Tragedy's like this shouldn't happen to guys like Gary.

I miss ya' Bro!!

I too only knew him from Moparts, but as many have already stated, it hurts. I'm sitting here with a huge lump in my throat and that funny burning feeling in my chest trying not to break down. Some months ago I posted about a Moparts members get together at some track somewhere for the purpose of meeting a bunch of you, as I was still kinda new at the time. Gary, "Un", was one of those I truly was wanting to meet. We swapped some PM's over the months, and got to know him that way. Heck of a nice guy with a great sense of humor. I too will miss his presence here. God bless his family & friends, and his family & friends here.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/13/04 10:22 PM

Rich called me around 2 and told me about this....

I'm still shocked. I've been to two of the infamous barbeques, Gary was always very willing to help, fun to shoot the s**t with, and an incredibly nice guy. He came to my house awhile back to verify the VIN # on my Charger so I could get a title for it here in Michigan. Rode in my 300, too. Always enjoyed running into him at swap meets, car shows and cruise nights.

I don't quite know what else to say...

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/13/04 10:23 PM

I'm still at a loss of words, Moparts has never had such sad day nor have I since my life long friend died while on his vacation a few years back. When Mark (my friend) passed I couldn't understand why and still don't to this day, I'll never understand why God had to call Gary home either but somethings are not meant to be understood I guess.

It's obvious that Gary has touched many hearts in his short life including mine, life is not judged by wealth, only by respect and the number of friends you leave behind, Gary was truly a rich man.

Not many people can reach out into cyber space and give it depth, Gary did and we owe it to him to try and be better people in our own life's, it's the only good that come from this tragedy.

This is the thread I see. Say it aint so, how could this be! I like many here never met him in person, but I admired the heck out of him for his posts, and friendly nature towards everyone. Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/13/04 11:11 PM

WOW! I cant believe this!
I just got home from a long day at work and of course first thing is to see what was going on at Moparts. The first thing I noticed was the "sticky" and "locked" on the "Uh oh.. I did it again. New Ink.." post. I though it was strange because:
a) posts do not typically get locked unless they turn inappropriate and
b) While amuzing, I did not realize why a tatoo post was so significant.
Then I noticed a post about contributing money to Gary (Unlawful) and it still had not sunk in. The first thing I thought that something happened to his beautiful car. I was looking forward to finally seeing it in person. With so many members loosing close friends and family members I did not know what to expect when clicking on "We lost a friend and member today." This was the last thing I could have ever thought of. I am still in shock. As I read post after post of touching and heartfeld messages, the reality of the situation finally started to sink in. It is strange how although many of us have never met face to face there is a strong sense of camaraderie and friendship. The pain and feeling of loss is simultaneously being felt by people around the world for a man many of us would never have even known if it had not been for Moparts and this common interest in Mopars.
Although I never met Gary in person, I was looking forward to a time when my Satellite would be finished when I could drive it to a Moparty to meet Gary in person. While everyone does not agree with all of the moderators actions sometimes, I am sure everyone will agree that Unlawful will be greatly missed. Words simply can not the provide the comfort needed at this time of sorrow. I dont think the full impact will be realized until the upcomming weeks, months, and years when I will no longer see posts from the man, the myth, and the legend... - Unlawful.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/14/04 12:09 AM

My God, I am in shock over this. Gary helped me with some parts for my 340 a few years back and was very helpful in helping me select the right parts for my project at the time. Like they say you never know when your name will be called. This just makes me think about all my friends and family and how short life really is. It is funny how you can speak to a person by phone or e-mail or on a board such as this and be touched by the news of ones passing. I feel that I know so many people thru this board that have a love for mopars like myself and feel so touched and sad for someone that I have never met in person. My heart goes out to Garys family in this time of sorrow. I will miss you Gary [UNLAWFUL].

He was tops in my book. Very stand-up guy, always tried to look at both sides of a dispute. Good Mediator. Never met the man wished I had , kinda glad I didn't, it would make the loss even tougher.
The loss of a fine man such as Gary is hard to swollow, however his memory will live on an be cherished by his close friends, and the Moparts Community

this is some very sad news. i could not really belive what i was reading here.

this just shows us all, that you do not know when your time is up. we should live life to the fullest. i think we all know that Gary was just that kind of a person. he has made many friends he has helped many people and he is loved. Gary will be someone that will be remembered by many people for a life time.
i will say that this is what life is about. making friends, helping people, and loving and being loved. in its truest form, this is what we as people should be like. Gary was this kind of person, a real and true person.
i hope i can be half the man that Gary was, that will make me a successful person.

Gary will be missed. i pray that GOD be with his loving wife and friends.

we love you Gary.

My God, like all the previous members-I'm in shock-after reading about Unlawfl in Mopar Muscle and reading that he was a fellow police officer, and conversing with him on Moparts, I can only wish his friends and family my prayers and condolences. Not actually "knowing" him but getting a feeling as to what kind of person he was by reading what he said and what people said about him-can only be described as a terrible loss for us all.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/14/04 12:54 AM

I can't believe this!!!! Scott just told me Gary had died and I could not believe it!!!

I never knew Gary in person but I sure enjoyed talking to him here at moparts and listening to his advice on building my engine. I emailed with him more than a few times. He was a real nice guy and I considered him a friend even though we never met.

When Scott told me he had died I felt real bad. That horrible hollow void in the chest. It sucks to loose friends all of a sudden because of stupid accidents like this.

I lost one of a my best friends about 2 years ago in a car accident and it was really sad. It's sad to see young, good hearted, talented people die like that all of a sudden. Its like they are today with you, talking, looking fine and the next minute...poof they are gone.... SUCKS!!

I will miss Gary. Still cant believe this....my prayers are with Gary and his family.

I do remember his car and thinking how cool and nice it was to see a challenger of that year in the spot light. I do hope the Magazines pay tribute to him and his family and to show everyone that we not only lost a great car guy, officer but a great man. My family and I will keep Gary and his family in our thoughts and prayers. I would also like to say to everyone that new him IM sorry and you all are in my thoughts and prayers to.

The wife and I were out eating dinner a bit ago when I got a callasking if I had been to moparts yet lately and then was told why,I couldn't finish my dinner and drove home with a very heavy heart.
I also had never met Gary in person,he had followed me here to moparts when the Mancini mesage board was shut down for a while and we had spoke off and on over the years, last time I called him on his cell he told me to call anytime, kinda wish I had now

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/14/04 01:42 AM

I'm really hurting right now....I'm numb with sorrow.

From the very first day I had the good fortune to wander into this site, Gary was the first one that made me feel like this was "Home". Aside from being cut from the same Mopar cloth, as many of us are, Gary felt like somebody I've known my whole life. We've pm'ed many many times over the years and spoke on the phone for long long times about strokes, rod ratios, cams, intakes and Dana 60's. We also spoke of Family, of our wives support of this crazy thing that consumes our free time, and of the joys of fatherhood and being a friend. Like many of us, I feel like I've lost a good friend. I was so looking forward to meeting him, hopefully at Indy this year.

At times like these, one feels so powerless. It seems all we can do his hold him and his family close in our hearts, get on our knees and pray to God to watch over his loved ones and bestow his grace upon them. We can also offer whatever love and support we can to Gary's family, and may we all find peace in knowing he's up there with the Lord. We can also find strength in one other, many of us have been Gary's extended family as we are also family to eachother.

I know I'll never forget him. The very next time you crank up your Mopar, let Gary hear it up there. Somehow, I know he's up there waitin' on us, and to hear that rumble and knowing we're thinking of him will make him smile.

I will miss you every single day, my brother

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/14/04 02:33 AM

When I first saw this this morning, I was stunned. I looked at a few of the replies but had to stop and compose myself, since I was at work. When you think of some of the main folks who have made Moparts the best Mopar site on the web, Gary was one of those folks. A great Mopar guy, a great cop, a great family guy, and a great American. In stark contrast to those we are fighting on the other side of the world. He was so helpful, encouraging, and kind. I have never met him or even exchanged posts with him on here I guess. But I know we are all a little better persons ourselves because of him.
I actually had the Mopar Muscle issue in my minivan that Gary and his car were in a year ago. When I met my wife at Subway for lunch I took the mag with me to tell her what had happened today.
My prayers and thoughts go out to his family and his friends. I lost my teenage son and daughter in an auto accident back in '96. The empty spots are never filled, but God gives the grace to go on.

As much fun as it is playing with the cars, one of the great by-products of this hobby is the great people you meet in your journies to shows, cruises or the track. Like many others who have written, Gary was the first Moparts member I met in person when I stopped by his car at the Nats a couple of years ago. Moparts couldn't ask for a better goodwill ambassador. We bumped into each other at various other shows and stuff and he always made a point of introducing everyone around. He was a super solid guy who never had a bad thing to say about anyone and was always willing to help. When Mike was having shifter problems on Woodward last August, Gary offered up his truck and trailer if required without blinking an eye. Just an example of the type of good guy he was. My condolences to his family. He will be missed by many.

I met Gary a couple years ago at the Norwalk Chysler Classic, and every year since then got together with him at that event and shared pit spots, bar-b-que, and great company. I also got to talk with him at the Milan, MI Classic last year.

He was truely an outstanding man. He served his community as an officer, he served the Moparts.com community as a moderator, and he always was willing to help others. He will be missed.

Wow,I just parked the truck in the drive AND hopped on board, here at MOPARTS,I sure didn't expect to read something, like THIS.
Gary, the man,the family man,the police officer, the friend, the help,on any thing you asked for man,the MOPAR fanatic,as many of Us are,YOU sure as hell will be missed,by everyone, who ever met you.
My thoughts and prayers go out, to your family, and all your friends and fellow Officers.
I 1st met Gary at the Nats last year, taking up the collection, for Sherman Lewis's accident at Milan. Then again at the Norwalk Chrysler Classic, what Fun, we had.
Gary was the PRIME EXAMPLE,of the friend you could find here on Moparts. Also a good sample of the guys from the Detroit Area,as I met several,of them last year.
I was hoping,to make it to the Moparty, this year.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/14/04 02:58 AM

I write this too all my friends with a very empty spot in my heart. words can't describe how I feel or felt for the past 15 hours. I can honestly say that I have never cried so much in my life. At first word of this news I went numb, then I wanted to hug my brother because I haven't seen him in a few weeks, then the tears came. They haven't stopped.
I kept calling STEFF and just kinda hanging up without saying anything. I couldn't talk , and I couldn't scream cuz' I was still at work. I couldn't leave work cuz' I could not pull myself together for the 10minute walk out of the building.
I finally left work an hour later and went home. Between blowing my nose and wiping my tears away people must have thought I was intoxicated. ( NOPE JUST LOST)...I felt like a real idiot when Procuda and 727jim called on my cell and I couldn't talk. I just cried......

Gary was like a brother to me, and many others. Now he is gone and I don't like it at all. I'm a very selfish person when it comes to my family and friends. Their mine, don't mess with 'em! Now he is gone. My wife and I always threatened Nicki and Gary that we were going to send our 2 kids home with them for a weekend, Gary was serious about taking them few times, Jake (My 6yrold ) started calling Gary Uncle after gary brought over a remote control ricer for him. I called Gary.. OD, because all the kids at the High School where he worked did. I thought it was cool.
Gary was the best. Gary was the most thoughtful person I have ever met. He just called me over the weekend because he said he hasn't heard from my on Moparts in a few days. He just wanted to know if everything was all right.
It was always great to here from OD, He just had away about him....Infectious ..

I'll stop there cuz I could go on rambling for hours. My Fat Cheeks and Eyes hurt from all the tears, and my Heart hurts cuz one of my best friends in the whole world is gone. . . ..Thank GOD I have a wonderful wife and wonderful friends like all you people to help me through Cuz I'm gonna need it!!

God bless you Gary, Nicki, all his family and all his friends!

Love , Bubba

I feel like I've been hit in the gut. Gary used to own a Yamaha Waveraider and recognized my screen name. He would e-mail me tips to make my ski faster and always replied to every e-mail that I sent him. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to meet him last year at the Nats.

Now the tears flow once again.
I hurt for you and Steve, (Steff) and your family's
I know how much Gary thought of you all and I know how much you all cared for him. Magic I could see when you all were together.
It will be a few days before I can talk to you or Steve but I will be in touch

Take care my brother and give Steve and all a hug for me.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/14/04 03:14 AM

I never met Gary, but one thing that I will always remember is when I finally got my Challenger fixed up and posted some pics here he was the first reply. What he said was that it is hard to make a flat hood challenger look mean, you my friend have suceeded.

Just the way he phrased his reply made me feel as if I had made a friend. He didn't know me from a hole in ground but he called me friend. Coming from some people it would have just been a word. Coming from him I knew he meant it.

He will be missed. My thoughts are with his family.

i feel really bad for posting this late......i guess i refused to believe it was true.

my take on mr. gary. he was always wiling to take time to explain things to me through a pm. never had to take the time to do it, but he always did - just as i am sure that all of you guys would. a really great all around guy. kinda makes me humbled to see how quickly things can change.....he will definetly be under my list of prayers for a good while.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/14/04 03:18 AM

I am still in shock over this. I have never met him, but he was always nice and level headed too. The scary thing is that i also drive that stretch very frequently. Also, as i sit here and have been up for almost 36 hours now, i cant sleep because all i can think of is Gary. Maybe i will wake tomorrow and read that this was all a mistake and that we can have gary back. No one should have to go through this, especiallly his wife. Ok i am done rambling now. Like i said earlier, we miss you, you were a class act.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/14/04 03:27 AM

I met Gary only once. That was in the Big Bear parking lot on Brice Road in 2001. He was rather outgoing and quite complimentary about the hot rod. His car was far nicer than mine but he was much more enthusiastic about my car being there.
We've discussed little things here and there over the years. He is one of the few that never criticized what I was doing or how I was doing it.
It's pretty obvious that we've lost one of the good guys. My only regret is that I never told him how much I appreciated his honesty and good nature.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/14/04 03:29 AM

It's hard to believe that someone you have never met in person, can effect you the way that Gary has effected us here. I'm numb. I feel like I've lost a great friend, yet Gary and I had only exchanged a few PM's. I still can't believe he's gone. My heart goes out to his friends, family, community, fellow officers, and anyone else who has had the pleasure of being touched by such a fine individual as Gary. I am at a loss for words.

Gary, you will be dearly missed.

RIP and thank you for all the good you have brought to all of our lives.

I just found out about this now, since I haven't been at the board in a couple days. I am floored, shocked, and torn up to hear the news. I had the opportunity to speak to Gary on numerous occasions and he was always a wonderfully nice and funny man. I remember buying Mopar Muscle when I recognized his car on the cover...

I can't tell you how sorry and sad I am. From the bottom of my heart.

I am simply a basket case right now after reading these 17 pages of a tribute to a truly great man. I am not surprised to see how Gary touched the lives of many others in the same way as myself. I met him a few times at the nats and with his wife down here in florida and was always left with the feeling that he was someone that you could look up to and learn from. His leadership, compassion and trustworthyness are so rare to find. Godspeed Gary

The first I heard of his departure was on the banner of moparts. I guess that's fitting since he devoted so much of his time, leisure and energy to these forums. He's in irreplaceable presence on these boards and by the sounds of it, just about everwhere he went.

Gary, I'm sorry I never got the chance to know you personally, but I always admired you for having the courage to wear that uniform. I always loved that car of yours and always will. It was fitting that such a great guy could have such a great car. Everyone here is going to miss you greatly.

Good bye...

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/14/04 04:18 AM

Things will never be the same again Bubba, I can only relate how I felt when my life long friend died while on his vacation celebrating his 10th wedding anniversary.

We were as close as two normal men could be and I still can't think of him without falling apart, and don't see the day that will change, I'm not sure I want that day to come.

I got a call at work from my sister that Mark (my friend) was in the hospital and they didn't think he would survive, my world fell apart in that moment, I lost it and there was nothing I could do, I was shaking so bad they sent me home.

When Mark and I were young we talked about a lot of things, one of them was that we would be together when the end came just like we were when both of are Fathers died with in a month each other, we were only 15 at the time.

I made the trip to Florida in record time and was in Marks room at 3:30 AM, where I put a guitar pick in his hand that he had given me some 20 years earlier, I can't say with certainty that he knew I was there, but we did play all of our favorite songs that night just like we did growing up playing in the bars around Detroit.

That guitar pick is somewhere in the gulf of Mexico, a tribute to a free spirit that loved the ocean.

Marks wife gave me his favorite guitar, to this day I've not been able to take it out the case and play it, but that day will come and I look forward to moment.

While my life will never be quite the same, Mark lives everyday in my heart and memory's just as Gary will in yours, be proud you were blessed with such a good friend

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/14/04 04:24 AM

id like to thank Gary for helping me, even in his death. im going through some very trying times in my life right now. the post here and all the kind words given to him, especially those that never met him in person, make me realize that even the toughest things i go through are trivial compared to what im sure his family is faceing in the near future. 4 hours ago i started reading page 1. the old saying " i never met a man i didnt like" came into my mind while i was reading and sniffling. seems Gary affected so many that when Will Rogers said it Gary must have been listining.

Thumbs up Gary Davis!! youll be missed as much as you were loved. though i never met you, i speak from the bottom of my heart. R.I.P.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/14/04 04:24 AM

It's hard to believe this is happening. Unlawfl was one of the first screen names I remember seeing here at moparts when I found the board sometime in 99.
I've bragged to my wife that I could come on here, post an announcement that I was driving across the country, and in short time have a place to stop and spend the night on account of other members here opening their homes. I'm Gary was that kind of guy. It seems impossible that the passing of someone I've never talked to or met or even seen in person can have such an affect on me.
I pray God's peace to his family, even all of us here. This is indeed a unique community, when one is hurting there are many willing to share an encouraging word and more.

It has taken me all day to absorb and try to deal with this information.
This is very shocking and sad news.
What more could I possibly add.
I met Gary at the Nats a few years back.
One of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet.
Gary set goals for his car and as we all watched and encouraged, he far surpassed them.
He and his car surely were the "best in class".
He is in a better place now and I'm sure in some way he is still watching.
God speed Gary, we will meet again.
My prayers go out to his family.

I am deeply saddened by the news of his loss.

Like many others, I only knew of Gary through the posts and replys he made on this board.
From all those posts and replys I was able to see that what a really nice person Gary was with a great sense of humor (example.. his avitar which cracked me up everytime I saw it) I also realized that he would do anything to help another in need.

The Mopar Community.. No...Check that.... The whole world lost a great person who will be dearly missed.

God bless you Gary ... Rest In Piece.

I found this thread about 2 hours ago and I'm still dazed. What can I say about Gary that hasn't been said? I never met him in person. He answered several questions for me. He sold me his distributor when he bought a new billet unit. We spoke on the phone a couple of times for that. NICE GUY! My experience of Gary was 110% positive. He was the good guy that has a positive influence on those lives he touched. When I saw his name on a post, I always read it. It was worthwhile. Guys like Gary lift us up. I'm sad he's gone, but I will revell in his excellence and the mark he left on the world. My condolences to his immediate family and friends, and to his Moparts family.

This is a quote from Bubba
Quote:

I'm a very selfish person when it comes to my family and friends. Their mine, don't mess with 'em!

I feel the same way. Their mine, dont mess with em,,,,Thats my family, thats my friend.
I had just seen him 2 weeks ago when we met out on Woodward. Got an email from him 2 days ago about getting together to work on my carb, etc,,,always lending a hand....

My brother was one of the trauma nurses on call when he came thru the ER and was there with/for him, I wish I could have been there for him as well. I went to work that morning at the hospital, not even knowing what had happened until later in the day, all the while, he was there..I wish I could have been there for him.

I will truely miss him, I feel sick. I feel angry, shocked, I feel very bad for his family.

My son Alex knew Gary well, he is 11, I remember Gary riding him around on the back of scooter down at Norwalk last year, doating over him, my son really liked him. When I got home from work last night, he had a tear in his eye, and things seemed so unfair. This is not supposed to happen.

We will all miss you Gary (#180)

I read Dave's post pretty much as soon as it was posted. Let me say it was a tough day to get thru. As with hundreds of other members I never met Gary in person. I was at events that he was in attendance at (Milan, WPC swap meets, etc), and now I'm sorry I didn't make the effort to introduce myself. I'm a local member and really don't post all that often, but I am here everyday reading with my friends. A few years ago I would never have imagined I could be so upset over a person I never met personally. The net has sure changed all of our lives. Sure there is a lot of bad out there, gonna happen in this big world. But the +'s the net has brought far out weighs the bad. I too will miss Gary's posts. Moparts will never be the same. My deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends. Thanks Gary for the joy you brought to the world.

I don't post here that often...so infrequently that I always seem to forget my logon stuff and I gottastart all over again. I've been reading a lot here lately and wanted to become more active, but this is what brings me back in. I never met Gary, but I enjoyed reading his posts and could see he was a hardcore Mopar guy and darn funny to boot. He will be missed by all, as evidenced by the hundreds of posts on this thread alone,as well as the numerous Gary related threads out there. His family has the prayers of my family.

I never met Gary and honestly didn't know him that well. But on one occasion we exchanged mail and he helped me out even though I was a stranger to him. From that alone I wish I could have known him better. My best to his friends and family.

When I heard the traffic reoprt in the morning I thought of Un but then thought no he works in Farmington Hills not Bloomfield Hills. I was wrong.
Was watching the 5 O'clock news and they started to describe "The Officer" I didn't know his last name, then they said his wife was an Officer also....I thought No it can't be.....When they said they go camping with their three boxers...I thought Oh $%^&....I remembered his post about the new pup a while back and when the showed Mopar Muscle Cover with his car......I could not believe it.
I never met Gary in person but always read his posts.....he always had something worth reading.

He will be greatly missed.

My Prayers and Condolences go out the his Family and Freinds

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/14/04 02:01 PM

It took me a while to even respond to this as it's one of the few things that kocks me off my feet. Let me be brief.

Gary helped me from day one on MOPARTS. He was the FIRST answer on my FIRST post over 4 years ago. He's a big reason, I've went this far in the sport. He first seeded my enthusiasm by selling me his "Unlawfl Wieand Excelerator." My car picked up .6 ET and 5 mph as a result. That lit the fire. After that, I promised HIM, I'd NEVER sell it or yield it to anyone BUT him. It has been a standing joke with several of us.

If anyone can think of anything to do with "his favorite manifold," I'd appreciate some ideas. I'm sure he'd LHAO if we could cast it into his headstone. If anyone could strap it on and make a 9 second pass before retiring it with Gary, that would be cool. I'll donate what it takes, to get it where it needs to be, in the condition we'd like to present it in.

RIP Un. You can ride in my Coronet anytime.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/14/04 02:04 PM

This is a tragedy and just another reason showing why alcohol and driving do not mix. Hopefully someday they will make cars or some sort of system that will not allow people to drink & drive. I am very sad for the loss of Gary and pray for his family. I also never had the pleasure of meeting Gary but as stated many time on this post, he was very well liked and will definitely be missed. I think it is a great honor and gesture to retire his username here on moparts and it just goes to show what a class act this board is.

Maybe a picture of Gary and/or his badge could be placed on the home page of moparts in memory of him.

My prayers go out to Gary's family.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/14/04 02:06 PM

Let him live in the hearts of those who are true
His family, and honour and all that is good

Having done what he must, we hold true what we can
To live with honour, and pass in peace...

It is this that makes a gentleman.

And so let us all gather round
all who know him and hear

on the common ground those who weep
each childs passing tear

and let it not be wasted
in an absent land.

(To Gary's family from across the ocean. Please make sure his family is ok.)

There are certain individuals on this web site that really stand out and Gary was definitely at the top. From the Pacific Coast Mopar car club in Monterey Bay California goes out our heart felt condolences to all that loved him. May God bring comfort to Garys family and friends. Rest in peace Gary.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/14/04 04:45 PM

I really dont know what to say either.I just turned on the computer and saw this now. I never met Gary in person because we lived so far apart, but being a mopar dude and a cop as well, Gary and I spoke several times via the phone about police work, personal problems and our line of work. I had a lot more yeras on the job than Gary and he called a few times asking what I would do, or what I thought regarding certain situations. We bacame friends in that way and on this board as well. I wanted to be the only West coast guy at the BBQ last year but could not swing it. Gary was 10 times the mechanic I am and probably twice the human being I am, but we had the same ideas of police work and trying to show people that all cops are not angry and hard to deal with and that we have compassion. He liked that idea as well and seemed to go to great lengths as well to show that. I too have a BBQ called Cops and Rodders every couple of years out here in Nevada. Its comprised of cops and Mopar guys, so they can meet one another and exchange values, ideas and friendship. Cops can become quite bitter over the years, expecially if they hang out with only other cops and dont see the good side of the public. Gary never seemed to get that way!!!! And I as a 20 plus year veteran respected him for that.

I will do my best to see if I can drum up some financial support from my department from some of the local cops, (Douglas County Nevada near Lake Tahoe) and my Mopar buddies. Maybe we can all help his family in some way.

If anyone out West or any where else for that matter is interested, on June 19th, I will be having that BBQ which is BBQ pig and beer. You are all welcome to come as there is usually 150 plus people and I live on 2.5 acres. There will be a moment of silence in honor of UNLAWFL there.

I know its out of the question for most of you, but I know you will be here in spirit. There is also room for trailers, campers, tents, ect here, everyone is welcome.

I am writting this from my work computer, so I cant post the flier I just made and will post it later when I get home and hopefully it will get a pin as well.

I also just want to say thnaks to the members here for the way they they are treating this situation as usually I only see type of support in our field. I am sure Gary is looking down right now and very happy with the response and admiration hes getting, you folks are amazing!

God speed Gary. were going to miss you!

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/14/04 07:02 PM

My great grandfather was killed in the line of duty in St Louis in 1936 (http://www.odmp.org/officer.php?oid=3985). I have an uncle on the force there in St Louis, he and my aunt attend the SLPD's memorial luncheon every year for officers killed in the line of duty. They call each officer's name, and any family members in attendance stand in memory of the officer.

It always makes me sad to hear about an officer down. It reminds me of the story my grandparents told about my great grandfather, how it impacted the family, and makes me think how there is a family behind every officer down. To log onto Moparts yesterday morning and see the news about Unlawful, well, it was very shocking and sad.

I didn't know Gary other than through the keyboard, but he sure impressed me as a great person. Makes me wish I had not been so busy hunting parts in the swap meet at the Nats the past couple years and had found the time to meet everyone at the Moparts tent, would have been able to meet more of you and probably would have met Gary in person.

I have read every reply in this thread and it's clear Gary was an outstanding human being. To his family and to those of you who knew him personally, I am truly sorry for your loss.

Gary was a guy that always answered my posts, whether it was an "atta boy" for a new best et, or helpful info on a particular problem. I am currently ordering my QTP's in the size that he found for me, when I couldn't locate it in my catalog. When he didn't cross paths with me for a while, he would PM me just to see what I had been up to. While we never personally met, I always felt like I was sitting across the table from him when we conversed. I'm going to have a tough time dealing with him being gone.....don't know what else to say.

I am new to this forum, read thru it every night but dont post much since Im new to this forum and new to the mopar world...just wanted to say that im touched by the responses on here....im a cop in Los Angeles and can see that Gary was well respected here, wish I could of met him....I've always enjoyed his posts. If anyone knows of any of his fellow officers I think they would very much appreciate knowing about this site and this thread especially, i have known fellow officers who have been killed and oh man, its hard. All the feeling expressed here would be greatly appreciated by them I know.

Just at a lost for words...you just never know when its ur time, my partner and I had a accident yesterday also, ran into a light pole while rolling code 3 after someone who didnt see us tried to turn right into us. Airbags deployed, unit was totaled, but we both walked away with some scratches.....and then I read this, live every day like its your last.

Just wish I could of known him.

Its hard for me to know what to say. I only knew Gary thru this site, but I feel like that was as close as knowing him in person. I feel his loss the same as if he had lived here in town and I saw him every day.

We are, all of us, diminished, by the loss of a friend. But we move on, knowing that he touched us in some small way, and made our lives better for it.

In the words of a good friend "Clonestocker", I would like to believe that our maker needed him somewhere else in a more important capacity, and called him home.

Rest In Peace Gary

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/15/04 06:12 AM

I've put off saying anything for over a day now because I just didn't know how to put my feelings to words (I still don't). I, too, am a police officer and I was fortunate to meet Gary (seems strange to call him "Gary"...he'll always be "Unlawfl" to me) a few years ago on Brice Rd. (back when the Chally was still green & silver) and had seen him a couple of times since then at the Moparts cookouts.
About four years ago, I went through a terrible time in my life. The friendships and helpful words of "Unlawfl" and some of the others on the board helped me through the difficult times (BTW, still happily married and having a 2nd baby next month). In one of the threads, everyone pitched in together to get me a computor so I could stay on the Moparts board. I printed up that thread and kept it ever since, just to look back and remember everyone's kindness. I think Gary's family would appreciate seeing all of the kind words that are being said about him here on Moparts.
Words cannot describe how saddened I am over his family's loss. My biggest fear as a police officer is leaving my children without a father. There is so much evil in this world that our children need the guidance of good parents. My prayers go out to Gary's family. May his family truly feel God's presence and comfort now. Gary...Unlawfl, thank you for the difference that you made in this world with your life; in your community, in your family, and here. You have spent your few years here on Earth wisely. You will be greatly missed!

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/15/04 06:25 AM

I am shocked as well as saddened. I never met Gary, but felt like I too knew him from reading all his posts. We never know when our time on earth is over. It's times like this, when I question why society puts sports figures and actors on such high pedistals, when it's the men and woman of our police and fire departments (and let's not forget our soldiers), who put their lifes on the line everyday to protect and help us! My prayers go out to Gary's family in their time of sorrow. Gary will be missed by all!

I too am in shock....my jaw literally fell open.

Don't really know what to say, but I wanted to say something...

While I'm mostly a lurker, and do not know anyone on this board personally, the internet has brought screen names and car pictures into my sphere of aquantainces. It is a shame and a loss, and my family extends our deepest sympathies and condolences to Gary's family and to everyone who knew him.

Be careful everyone, and tell everyone that you love that you do whenever you can.

I think this board, and the world has suffered a great loss, and will not ever be the same...

Again, our condolences.

I'll keep Gary's family in my prayers. Anytime you lose a friend or a loved one is hard, but to lose one so suddenly and so young is tragic. I was scrolling through some threads and there was his last post. It was eerie knowing the man who had written it was gone. I know God needed him or he wouldn't have called him home. God's speed Gary, you'll be missed.

wow what a thing to see on here after being off it for awhile. I got back on to post on my post about my son being born on the 10th and see this. I didn't know Gary in person but knew of him on here and knew it was his challenger on the cover and just knew him that way. That is so sad. I lost my mom on the 29th of march and we had cars in the funeral. That is they way she wanted it and that is the way Gary would too.

RIP Gary RIP good man!

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/15/04 05:14 PM

My deepest regards go out to Nikki and Gary's family, as well as everyone here on MOPARTS..

I was informed of this terrible news yesterday when I recieved a call from markbeep. I started to read it , but could not finish it in one setting.

I feel that I am one of the VERY lucky ones to have met Gary. But bare with me..

I knew him here on Moparts and talked to him a little through pm's about his Moparty's, That I never made it to. I finally got a chance to meet him at Best Machine last year when I went out to pick up my tranny from 727Jim.. I kinda had mixed signals from Gary at first. I thought he was short and sorta "prickish" when meeting him. We only talked for about 20-30 minutes.. I was kinda confused.

When I got back home, after the 6 hour drive, I made a post here about meeting Gary, Steff, 727Jim, his son Ryan and Chuck, at Best.. I said I was dissappointed about not seeing some cars. Gary pm'd me and was VERY APOLOGETIC. Little did I know at the time that it was the same day that he and Nikki made the decision to put of their "children" {Boxers} to sleep. Since then, Gary and I became a little closer through pm's and e-mails. I wish I could've gotten to know you ALOT better.

He gave me the BEST compliment I ever recieved about my car when he made the post about how much of a "jalopy" it was when I bought it. That made me feel soo GREAT about myself and what I accomplished.. I only wish that he was around now to know that the head gaskets are going back on tonight and he is able to go for a ride anytime... I'll miss ya man.. Thanks for being an AWESOME FRIEND.. .as I type through VERY teary eyes...

"He was the best of us."

Just read the news. What a tragic loss to both his family and friends. My prayers and condolenses to the family. He will truly be missed by all that came in contact with him. Having never met him or spoken to him personally I still felt the heart warming genuine friendliness that he exuded in his posts. As can be seen here I think that everyone respected him and his wisdom. He will be sorrily missed by all. I am deeply saddened by the news and regret the fact that I never got a chance to meet him. The world has lost a truly good man in heart and spirit.

Gary my prayers are with you and I hope that you get a prime pit location at that great race track in the sky.

This is just unbelievable...
I remember waking up as the news posted breaking news about this accident, it was about 3am.
Then I was at the barber yesterday & I am reading the detroit news & free press article about the accident, all the while thinking to myself that this person seemed familiar to me.
I found myself thinking about it every time there was a news update, it wasn't till today that all the pieces came together for me.

It's such a tragic loss to everyone who knew him. My prayers and condolenses to his family.

Respectfully,
Matt

Like most everyone else who've posted, I never knew him personally, only through Moparts. But I knew from reading his posts that he was both extremely knowledgable & always willing to help. When I logged on to Moparts Friday night & saw the memorial banner at the top of the home page I thought, "What the......?" Then when I read the story I was dumbstruck, unable to join the posts right then. Not until now have I been able to add my condolences to his family & friends. There just aren't words..................

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/16/04 02:14 AM

I've been preoccupied with everyday life and havent been by the boards recently. I was at E-town today, my 12 year old son was hungry so we stopped to get a slice of pizza. To my surprise was a post card size memorial for Gary. I was stunned. I quickly made my way to the Moparts tent to find out what had happened. Dave filled me on on this tragic event. It took every bit of my self control to avoid losing it while he was telling me the story. This hit home! although Gary and I never met in person I considered him a brother. I too was a police Officer, I just retired 12/31/03, after 18 years of service(NYPD). after my visit with Dave at the moparts tent I wandered away in disbelief, this was not the first time that I've dealt with the loss of a fellow officer this was different!

My wife rang my cell as I was walking away immediatly she knew something was wrong she heard it in my voice. When I told her what had happened she too was overwhelmed with saddness and quickly asked about his family. was at this point I could not control the tears.
my heart felt saddness my sorrow can not be expressed in words, my prayers go to his family and friends. Indeed we lost a good man.
the only consolation is that he he is now in a better place. I guess the good Lord needed another Angel!
May he rest in peace and the lord watch over his family and provide for them!

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/16/04 02:44 AM

After 48 hours, I still don't think I have the words to adequately describe Unlawfl's passing.
I never met the man. And he wouldn't know me from Adam.
But, the one thing that sticks out in my mind is when my car, along with those of four other Moparts members, appeared in the same issue of Mopar Muscle last year.
Unlawfl started a thread in which he told Moparts members about it. Even though his car had earlier gotten the front page and a full spread in MM, he still seemed genuinely excited about more Moparts members getting coverage in the premier Mopar magazine.
Judging by the comments made by people who knew him best, he was a good man who had his priorities straight.
It's tough to accept right now but, Gary is in a better place. To those who knew him and loved him, take comfort in knowing that you had the privilege of making his acquaintance, if for only the briefest of time.
Also be glad that you got to share a few laughs while working on these old Mopars that can sometimes get you so upset.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/16/04 02:58 AM

Like many here, my first contact with Gary was here on the board. a few years ago i got to work side by side with him on another members car down here in florida. as i got to know Gary a little better, i realized what a special person he was. Gary also helped us out in the enginemasters regional competition. he was willing to do whatever he could to help, but hey, that's the way he was all the time. Gary's attributes were many and we're all going to miss him terribly. i feel like i've lost a brother, well, actually i guess i have. My prayers go out to Gary's wife Niclole. she's so much like Gary was, a very wonderful person and a joy to be around. i can only imagine what she's going through. god bless her.

I am very shocked and totally devistated!! I did not know Gary personally, either. But very fimilar with his member name. I personally loved his posts on tech ( very smart and logical individual) I picked up on his ideas for my ride, and have been very satisfied with the results as per say. This has been hard to put down hear on the board, especially after reading 30 something pages of posts. All I can say is The Members on this site are an outstanding group of unique individuals like Gary. Its no wonder HE liked the web site. The tag for Gary' name will be missed by a lot of people on this site. I know I will. I lost two very special people in my family with in 2 years and hearing about this now does,nt help much. I know his wife, family, kids and the community all share a great loss of a man who has purpose!! Who helped, Who shared, Who generally brightened someone's day. Why do all the good one's go......That is a question I have no understanding. Gary, I will miss your posts. I wish we could have met. You are a very outstanding person ( 30+ pages worth are hard to argue ) And will be missed by the masses. My heart goes out to your wife, kids and family. And all the people that have had personable experience's with such a great individual. God Bless you my friend............Meanmaxx

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/16/04 05:42 PM

Until now I have hesitated to post a reply here because I couldn't find the words to express how I feel. While I never had the pleasure of meeting him personally, I have a hollow feeling inside. When one of my cars made the cover of Mopar Muscle, Gary was the first to send me a e-mail to congratulate me. When I got in an argument with another member over something stupid, Gary sent me a e-mail and reminded me that I was arguing with someone who didn't share the same appreciation for restored cars. Through his many posts, he showed that he was a first class gentleman and I'm sure those who were close to him feel like they have been robbed of something precious. Like myself, I'm sure many other members share the huge sense of loss and have shed a few tears over such a tragic event.

My condolences to his wife Nicki and the rest of his family and friends.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/17/04 01:55 AM

I took my Challenger to the funeral home today. What a glorious day for a drive. It was the kind of day that makes you feel great without any other enhancers. There were a zillion people there all to pay their respects. Half of which were cops. Cops from neighboring towns, Detroit cops, cops from all over. It was pretty impressive. There were lots of sweet Mopars in the parking lot, too. (including Gary's Challenger right in front)

Emotions ran high in the sorrow department and I wasn't sure I was going to make it to the front of the line to say hello to Nikki. When I was just about to the front I thought I was going to lose it, but soon found that Nikki was a pillar of warmth and confidence. Yeah, she was bumming, but what immense strength she demonstrated. It only figures that a guy like Gary got a gal like Nikki. Sweet, considerate and welcoming. She gave ME the strength to push on, as compared to the other way around. How ironic. I felt like a blubbering mess,(I wasn't actually crying, but felt like I was gonna' at any moment) but HER attitude really helped me pull it together and feel good about being there. Imagine that. What a fantastic lady.

Should be another impressive display of police and Mopar iron tomorrow for the procession. I feel honored to be able to participate and more than anything, EXTREMELY honored to have made friends with Gary a few years ago. We're gonna' miss that donut eatin' speed freak. (I love jabbin' Gary with that stereotype! ) He was and still is one helluva' guy cuz he's gonna' live on forever in my book.

I've been away for a few days because of work and family commitments.
I couldn't believe what I was reading this morning, I'm still shocked.
I first met Gary 3 or 4 years ago at the Nats, and looked forward to seeing him and other Moparts people at Big Bear each year.
What impressed me most was what a down-to-earth guy he was.
Whan I posted about a perplexing parenting problem I had with my little boy and ex-wife, it was his advice I trusted most.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/17/04 06:15 AM

I, was setting on the porch of the gym my husband and I belong to Thurs... speaking to a friend of my husbands who is also a cop, he was kind of making a little fuss about having to work on his birth day. It was purely in jest, he told another of his friends when she ask him about (being a witness to a crime while off duty,) that "There's no such thing as off duty cops" as our conversation continued he thanks me for having sympathy for people in their line of work, as I told him it is a job that I, wouldn't want...(they have so much to deal with) and it came around to it always seems to be those routine(done it a zillion times) traffic stops that seem to claim the lives of so many of our officers.
I'm not sure why.... but I came home and got on the computer( I've been offline for a while due to a virus and hving to reformat everything install a router so on) And the first place I come to is Moparts where I saw on the main screen in bold blue letters: In Memory Of...And I honestly froze!
It has taken me this long to even be able to reply to this thread. It's been on my mind and it literaly breaks my heart, I didn't know Gary (Unlawful) as well or as long as many of you did, but every time I had the privillage to speak with him he was kind, compassionate and very genuine. I have 2 pm's in my inbox from him that I have read over and over and many that were deleted( as Dart_Girl said ... had I only known.... just goes to show that we take so many things for granted.. I know I'm rambling but you'll have to forgive me as words escape me right now... I, too feel as if I've lost a dear friend even though I was never fortunate enough to have met him and his wife in person.. I, would just like to tell her how very sorry I am for her loss and for all of you on this board who are hurting because of his death, I'm sorry for your loss as well.
And to quote officer Larry "There is no such thing as an off duty cop" He was just relocated to a better/higher precinct(sp?) One where there is no more drunk drivers, or knife carrying bad guys to contend with... it's constant donuts and coffee for OUR deeply missed (Unlawful) Gary Davis.. God Bless You All you have my deepest sympathies as I can't imagine how deep your sorrow must run.
Slow down, buckle up, and the next time you get pulled over for being in a hurry when you're late for work... instead of grinding your teeth and cursing the officer just say Thank you officer! He's trying to save you or your loved ones this kind of grief.

Re: We lost a friend and member today - 05/17/04 04:21 PM

I too only knew Gary from online. I specifically waited until today, as close as I could to the time of his funeral to add my thoughts to this thread. I knew I would not be able to attend the service, but felt this was the best way I could participate, by specifically taking the time to remember him now. However, by waiting, there isn't much I am able to add that hasn't already been said. Gary's legacy will be the vast number of lives he touched while he was with us - both here on the board, as well as offline. Simply to show how much of an pillar of the Moparts community Gary was, as of the time of this reply, there have been almost 1100 posts, with almost 32,000 views on the various topics dedicated to Gary. Those numbers speak volumes alone.

Gary, thanks for everything. You will be sorely missed by myself and everyone else here.

He truely was the best of us.

I only met Gary once (last year at the nats) but after meeting him once and reading all of his posts I felt I knew him.

This tragic event has touched me in many ways and I feel the loss very deeply, not nearly as much as many of you I'm sure. I still get all choked up whenever I come to this bored now.

I regret I couldnt make it out to his service or funeral today, but rest assured He and his wife will forever be in my prayers.

R.I.P Gary......I hope that when my time comes I will get to meet you again

I just heard about this today. I didn't know him other than here. I'm happy he broke his 10 second barrier and happy that he made the cover of MM with that awesome ride.

We'll be seeing ya, Un.

Please extend our deepest regards to his wife and family from my wife Judy and me. This whole ordeal made me think a lot about life and the paths we take and are led to.

Decided to check in today and catch up on the latest Mopar news. When I saw what it involved it felt like someone had punched me in the stomach. I never met Gary in person, but he had answered questions for me and offered advise several times. In addition, he was always one of the first board members to post a word of encouragement when I needed to vent about my sons illness. This is truly one of the saddest things that I have ever heard about. My heart goes out to his family and friends for this horrible and tragic loss.

Haven't visited this board in months. Dropped in yesterday to the Unlawful Race Only forum. I just assumed he had taken charge of that forum. When I figured out what happened my heart sank.

I never met Gary but I felt that I knew him through the posts and all the people that responded to him. I`m kind of at a loss for words. I have been reading all the posts in the last few days and many of them are saying what I feel. It was tragedy and it has been hard on the family. The hardest part is yet to come. Once the attention calms down and everybody settles back into their own life, Nicole will be left with an empty space. This is the time that the support needs to carry on and let her know that we will not forget.

I never had a chance to personally meet Gary, but only through Moparts, PM's and the sorts, I was planning a trip to St. Ignace to the big show up there and then get a chance to see him and his car. My prayers are with Gary and his Family.

RIP Gary.

WOW I'm gone for a little while and now this.
Great guy to the Mopar hobby, great tech and advice over the years. He will be missed but many many friends.
A fellow officer in blue lost too soon.
I just recieved word that one of my officers was shot tonight while attempting an apprhension. Just moments before I found out about UN.
Way too soon.....

I haven't been on Moparts for a couple days and just learned of this. My heart sank. I only had one or two board interactions with him, one concerning the color of his challenger (prowler orange). My buddy is painting his 82 shortwide that color because of seeing it on Gary's car. No doubt an upstanding individual with a heart of gold. My condolences go out to all family and close friends.

I saw your post and figured I might know you. I'm Kim, Gary's big sis. I'm glad you we're reunited, I'm sure that made him happy. I don't know how to post yet, just stumbled upon your's. I always liked those Road Runners beep beep!!! Thanks for being part of his great big Moparts.com family. Keep your chin up, he would want you to be smiling.

Looks like your first post went off without a hitch. Good job Kim! Gary would be proud (probally more shocked) that you are posting on Moparts.

I admire your strength. Gary and I weren't close in the sense that many others were close to him... people like the Irons aned racing buddies etc. but we were good chatting buddies be it on the computer, moparts, ims or the phone Gary always liked to talk about cars and most of our conversations revolved around cars and our love for the hobby and for the people in this hobby and of course he mentioned you to me.

I was stricken with how amazing it was that you said for US to keep our chin up when I can't imagine the pain you must be feeling being that you were siblings and knew him better than any of us ever could.

God bless you.

I hope you continue to post and keep Gary's memory alive. None of us will ever forget him nor the kind things he said to us or did for us.

Take care of yourself and don't be a stranger.

Peace,
DG
