Hole in my foot Daytona project here, updated 1/24/12 - 12/02/11 01:45 AM

A while ago I posted a question on a project as to costs and if I shot myself in the foot or not. The consensus was yes. Well I took it on anyhow. A little history on why. First my grandfather was a clay modeler at Creative Industries through out the 60. He did the mock up for the first gen Charger and the Daytona. Oddly the majority of pictures I have of him working there are when they did a full scale for the Queen of England's new limo. Back then that was the great honor and big deal job at the time. So there is a tie in there personally as I was real close to him and to do a car that he helped create and was there when it was built means something to me. Second the owner was introduced to me by a very close mutual friend who was lost 4 years ago and I feel the need to do this on that account. So before you all call me nuts for taking this on refer to the aforementioned. Without further ado some pictures.

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 12/02/11 03:59 AM

When you're on your photobucket album page put your arrow cursor over a pic and it will show a list of link options. Click on the 'IMG' the one with [img brackets. It will say 'copied' and then you can paste it into your post here.

Preview your post and it should show the pic.

Cool project man, good luck!

Just open your pic in photobucket, then right click on the pic.click properties, then highlight the whole address and right click it and copy it. Then come to your post here and hit reply in your thread and add whatever description you want of the pic.I then hit enter a few times to get a few spaces between the text and the pic I'm about to add.To add the pic type No spaces between anything. Then scroll down and hit continue and your pic should be in the post reply. Takes some getting used to, but you'll get the hang of it. Good luck, and thanks for sharing a great project.

You guys probably remember this one.
Showed up to but a ramcharger and this was in the backyard.
This must be one of the four you know of Dave.
Believe this was the flood one of something to that extent.

Can wait to watch this post, great car.

Actually, Tom P's old Daytona isn't the flood car. It is often confused as such though. He sold it a few years ago and it is now in Australia getting restored. There is a long post on it over on the Charger website.

If you are asking about the one in the pic a few posts above, it was an all matching #'s 440 auto 4.10 Dana car with tag. Can't remember if the sheet was there or not. I pushed that car in and out of the trailer helping Tom out a few times! Super clean car, just beat up!

Either the factory did this or Creative did it when they replaced the fender but the upper splash shield ended up here. How do you restore this then? If the car would be put back to as new then it would have to stay there, right?

We have access to a real nice virtually rust free Charger shell. A rebody would have been easier but I am a firm believer that the cars "soul" rests in the original parts. So reusing all we can of the original Daytona is more prudent to its resurection. Being in the north east I am rarely privy to restoring anything that is not ruted to heck. It would be nice if a southern project would show up one day. Until then, pain builds character.

Interesting here. You can see they left the rear window sealer from the standard Charger window after they cut it out. Also they used screws to hold the headliner in place back there. The sail panel area looks like it will be the biggest a$$ ache with replacing the quarters.

Biz has been booming and time at a premium this year but will download some pictures in the next few nights. The car is almost ready to go get dipped and e coated. All down hill after that. As with any car this corroded there was a lot more repair needed than anticipated. Ended up replacing door jambs, inner rockers, one frame rail ect. All in the name of fun right?

American Metal Cleaning outside of Toledo, OH is doing the metal prep. I am down to two places on the e coating. Both have narrow deep tanks which will require the fabrication of a jig to tip the car sideways for submersion. It is getting hard to find places anymore in the north east. Lots of them, compatively, in the midwest though. I'll let you know where we go and the results.

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 10/22/12 05:49 AM

American Metal Cleaning wasn't very careful with my 70 bee fenders when I had them dipped years ago (lots of new dents). Just a word of caution.
Also I heard you need to have a quote in writting and what they are doing as the bill likes to get added to in the end without notice.
The guy will tell you one price and his wife will charge you another higher one.

I haven't dealt with them for probably 10 years but from a couple friends I heard this other stuff.

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 10/29/12 11:39 PM

In keeping with shop policy I try to use as much of the original car as is possible. Here I seamed in an AMD inner wheel house. Some creative work was needed. In a few weeks I am going to issue a "report card" in the resto section on the AMD stuff that were used. There was a lot.

I had shot for a year but since we can't drive our cars up here until April or so I have that as a target. Would be about 15 months total. I am a one man shop pretty much so it takes a bit longer than on TV. The car will see its official public outing at Chryslers at Carlisle next July.

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 10/30/12 11:11 PM

Is this the project that had a $35k budget? If so, has that had to increase after all the metal work that was needed? Also, how many hours has it taken to get to this point? Keep up the good work. It looks awesome! Ron.

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 10/31/12 01:34 AM

We had no set budget. I does need to be as low as is possible. The owner has been helping me quite a bit lately where there are two sets of hands needed. I do not want ot look at the hours yet.

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 12/17/12 03:15 PM

I spied a '70 Charger hood

I was wondering why people don't modify it to take out the ribs so it looks like a Daytona hood?

That is a lot of work on that car, it is looking good, keep it up!
Posted By: sixpackbee

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 12/17/12 04:02 PM

Troy, In rough numbers the stripping, which is a non corrosive process, is in the mid 3,000 range depending on the amount of times it needs to be dunked. That is body, fenders, doors and hood. The e coating is around 750 for the same amount parts. Now factor in 1,700 miles of diesel, hotels, meals and it kicks the better part of 5 grand in the teeth. The labor savings and thoughness of getting rust preventative into all the spaces makes it worth while. The e coating is good for 1,000 hours of salt spray. Figure a collector car and the pampered life they lead I'll be long rotted away before it starts to rot again.
Dave, I was on a tight schedule to get this stuff out there. If there are a few spare hours I may do the hood. The car is never leaving the family and will not be shown so I am trying to get the best bang for their labor dollar at this time. It is funny how many other little things are different on a Daytona front end compared to a production 70 Charger. I am thankful 70 stuff at least looks right from the outside. Just how much fun would be had to have to find Daytona specific parts.

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 12/17/12 04:09 PM

Where did you have it e coated and stripped?

Steve
Posted By: sixpackbee

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 12/17/12 04:22 PM

Steve, It was stripped at American Metal Cleaning in Toledo, Ohio. The e-coating was done at EA Tech in Elkhart, Indiana. AMC had a 68 GT500KR convert. coming in after we left that was submerged in salt water, typically the kiss of death, thanks to Hurricane Sandy. I would have liked to see the before and after of that one. They seemed to think they will save it. I hope so. Pretty rare car.

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 12/18/12 07:07 AM

WOW I was just there at AMC to drop off a cylinder block on thursday, Small World. I saw them working on a fastback Mustang in there, still black in color. There was another car there already stripped but it wasn't a conv.
I am waiting for a call to go pick up my block so I will have to take a closer look at the cars there.
The car looked like it turned out Nice, Congrat's and Great job on all the major work you have done so far.

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 12/18/12 02:08 PM

Holgar, You have had other cars stripped this way? How do you get all the stripper out of the seams? I know a guy that thought he was doing it right and the chemical kept eating. I hope that is not the case here.
Posted By: sixpackbee

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 12/18/12 02:58 PM

David, I thought she said the 500KR was a convert but might have heard wrong. The fastback in there might be it.
Tom, The process they use is not like an acidic base that some places use. It is neutralized quite easily. It is mundane enough that it takes a lot of seperate dunkings to get all the crud off. Also The ecoaters put it through 11 differenet rinse and conditioner tanks before the primer goes on. I am confident we are OK.

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 01/02/13 06:24 PM

Amazing work so far, great to follow. Have a question about the stripping and dipping. Is there anything on the car after it's stripped to prevent rust or does it have to go immediately to the dipper? I'm just thinking if some unexpected rot is revealed after the paint is off could it be fixed before the shell starts to rust and needs to be redipped.

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 01/02/13 10:43 PM

Tim, The strippers put a water soluable coating on it after the last process. This has about a 30 day life. Plenty of time if stripping should uncover some missed issues. If it should lightly flash rust the e coaters process will remove minor surface rust.
Posted By: Chally426

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 01/03/13 01:54 AM

A differant place did the e-coat....They jigged it and did all that for 750.00 ????

That sounds stupid cheap to me, is that right?

No. We got there at 5 in the morning. We had a jig made up for it and and to have it all ready to go. They picked up with overhead crane and off it went. They rpicing is done by what footage the load is. The tanks are 50' long and our set up was 24'. Must be 1500 per load.

The air cleaner is real TA/AAR assembly. I bought a whole set up, carbs, manifold, linkage and air cleaner for a 100 bucks. Stuff was mint. Sold all of it but the air cleaner for 200. Made 100 quick bucks and kept a cool air cleaner. I thought I set the world on fire. At the time is was barely bringing home a 100 a week. So clearing that much that fast was a big deal. As so many others have said: If we only knew then what we know now.

Hey Holgar,Nice work on this Daytona! This may be kind of ironic, but I am building a Daytona replica of the exact same car. That is what I was planning to use that 68 Charger shell I tried to buy from you for. Too bad we couldn't have made that happen. Mine will be F6 green with a black stripe and wing. I have almost all the parts to build the car. I have a 68 shell, but it needs a lot of metal work. I will probably start on it next year. I have all the sheet metal for it already. Anyway your restoration of this Daytona has inspired me to push forward with my clone project.

Did you end up building the numbers engine, or a big inch monster that you mentioned in the beginning of the thread?

Fantastic work, seeing stuff like this makes me raise the bar on my own workmanship.

James, The engine/trans that was in the car is tucked away safely. This one is +.030 Ross piston, Ohio I beam rod, stock crank all balanced. 452 heads with some mild bowl work and SSI valves. Comp Cams custom hydraulic, Smith pushrods, Isky rockers and Lunati springs. I fiddled with the trans a bit. Since he decided to keep the 4.10's I put a little bit of a converter in it. We are taking it to the track to see what it will do. I think some mid 13's are in order. I can't stand to see restored cars running 16's like you see so often.

Chris, It is my own mix based on the low mile cars I have had in the shop over the years. It is a PPG based acrylic enamel.

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 09/11/13 03:41 PM

Not much to post in the way of pictures. Been doing wiring and dash work. Not exactly thrilling photo subjects. Got the master done and the booster dolled up and installed. All the brake/fuel lines run. Headliner in. All the little things that take up an unreal amount of time but really look like they should not. Back at it I suppose.

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 10/29/13 01:04 AM

Guess it has been a while. Been pooping along. Got the dash and wiring in.

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 10/29/13 01:05 AM

Got the engine running. First time in 30+ years there has been heat in there. Need a few things yet. Tan cap, new vacuum advance can, pit free master cover ect.

Just a compare/contrast.

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 10/29/13 01:12 AM

Data tag. Much happier now. The tin piece is tucked away safely. I would hate to see it fall off and get lost.

Posted By: aspenrt360

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 10/29/13 02:17 PM

my data tag is rusty as well. the car is not worth anything compare to yours but I hate to put a rusty tag back on the car. I also don't know how I feel about getting a repop of the same tag. the rest of the car looks great
Posted By: sixpackbee

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 10/29/13 03:47 PM

Keep the original in a safe place and get a repop for the car. If anyone gripes tell them the original is rusty and fragile and is safe place and that the repop is an exact copy.

awesome build. Do you shoot the paint at home? Or have a booth at home?
Posted By: sixpackbee

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 01/29/14 06:55 PM

I have two shops. One in a nearby town where all the body & paint is done. Then my shop at home where all engine/trans/assembly work is done. Sort of a pain but it keeps the oil out of the body work and body dust out of the engines.

All the parts are in paint now. The interior lacks just the front carpet, seats, console and steering column. Mechanically it is pretty much done. Need to bleed the brakes and test the PS for leaks and get an alignment done. Still have some stainless work to do. Should be done in a few weeks. I hope so as I have 4 cars waiting in line here.

It really wont be that bad Holgar . Here is a picture from last Sunday, a crew of us heading north to the HMN Musclepalooza show. A 285 mile round trip and 3 out of the 5 cars were 4.10 STP cars and one 340 with 3.55. I blew through 100 bucks in premium.

James, Albion for us is around a 320 mile round trip. I figured between the Daytona and my Hemi we should give the oil companies some joy.

Even dusted years of cobwebs off the Hemi for the trip to the Lake Erie Mopar meet in Albion, Pa. 320 mile round trip. The most miles the Bee has seen in one day since 1983.

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 06/02/14 01:39 PM

We entered the Wing car, Hemi, AAR/TA judged class. 6 other wing cars including the Graveyard Daytona. The Hole in my Foot Daytona took second place overall. The lack of the jacks being done and some trim we have yet to get back probably held it back from first place. A pesky Hemi Challenger convert took first. So the highest award in the class for a wing car. That ended a very good day. As an aside the F6 Daytona in the back round was 4 serial numbers off the Hole Daytona. He won best of show for 66-71 overall I think.

Re: Hole in my foot project here - 06/02/14 01:41 PM

Heading home. It was a long trip with 4.10 but well worth it. Now 3 more projects to get done before years end.

That concludes this broadcast. For all that have followed along I hope you have found it interesting and maybe educational, read: do not take that project on! I thank you sincerely for the kind words and compliments along the way and maybe if that other Daytona shows up next year we can start a new thread. Until then take care and never give up, they do eventually get done.

....I realize that the car belongs to someone else and that you may not wish to discuss the final tab at all, but any comments....especially considering the thread title? Were we way off or..

anyhow, understood if you'd rather not say and regardless of the greenbacks and time spent or not spent, the final result is spectacular.
