It's time to Pimp the Imp! - 08/17/11 03:01 AM

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port
Aboard this (not so) tiny ship...

I'm going to stop goofing around and get down to business on the Imperial. Why the rush? I've set a personal goal. I want this car running, driving, and looking good in time for the Hot Rod Power Tour 2012. The ride will run from Detroit to DFW. I want to take the full ride with the Imperial.
Don't get ahead of me on this. Here's a basic yet realistic plan of action.
1) Get some seats in the beast
2) Do the body work
3) Make it black again
4) Vinyl top (assuming time/funds allow)
5) AIR CONDITIONING
6) Front end and suspension rebuild
7) Install the A518 overdrive
8) POWER TOUR
9) Wheel/tires/brake conversion
10) Fuel injection
11) TURBOCHARGE!

Here's a photoshop of what I've got in mind for a finished product.

That's a rough pecking order. For instance, if the vinyl top will be cost prohibitive on my miniscule budget it will get bounced around to fit. I'd like to have it in time for the Power Tour.
The same goes for the fuel injection. If time allows, I might slide it in before the Power Tour. Since I have everything it takes to install the EFI it will only cost me time.
The real hot rod stuff like the heads and turbos will have to wait until after the Power Tour. The Imperial will be absolutely pimptastic without the horsepower. It's just icing on the cake.

When I built the hot rod I did all of the cool stuff and never cared about making it look good. In the end, it's still a bit embarrassing and I've lost interest in the car. It was just a toy.
This time, I'm doing the opposite. I want to knock out the pretty stuff first. if the car is enjoyable to run around in I will have a harder time losing interest. Don't worry about me not getting the turbos and other go fast stuff installed. I'm still a hot rodder at heart. I want the power. That part of me will never die.

Anyway, enough rambling.
I will need to sell the hot rod to pay for the work on the Imperial. Luckily, the hot rod isn't that far from being a running and driving car again. This weekend I need to get busy with it once more.

About the Imperial...
I found it on Craigslist in 2010. It was 3 hours from home. I borrowed a trailer and hit the road.
This is what I found:

It had been put in storage (read: some guy's open field) and left there a little too long. To say it was rough would not be an overstatement. Quite frankly, the car was a mess. The seller moved it to a covered area and tried to get the car to start. He failed miserably.

Under all the funk, tons of rat droppings, trash, and seriously disgusting odor was a fairly solid car that had potential. A little negotiating and it was on it's way home.

The Imperial's option list reads like a modern car: power steering, power disc brakes, power windows, power vent windows, power leather split bench seats, front and rear folding arm rests, tilt/telescoping column, automatic A/C, rear A/C, 8-track (maybe not so modern there), power antenna, automatic headlights, auto dimming headlights, headlight turn off delay, cruise control, a glove box in every door, ash trays and lighters in every door, and lots more.

It sat in the driveway while I fiddled with little things here and there. The car was cleaned out and cleaned up. That's when we found the rusty trunk floor. Then, Andrewh and I spent 9 hours making it run. We changed everything in the ignition system, swapped the starter, primed the oil system, and coaxed it to life.
That old 440 runs like a top. It's a little down on power for a barge this big but it gets the job done.

A trip to the used tire store had the car rolling on some cheap used tires. Once I figure out which wheels are going on the car I'll get new tires.

I've been driving the car to make sure the engine and transmission are going to be usable. The car had a habit of overheating. I sent the radiator out to be recored. A new fan clutch was in order too. When that was off, I turned the water pump by hand. That was scary. It felt chunky and like it was grinding. I also noticed the belts had not been changed since the Carter administration. It was all replaced. There are no more cooling issues.

Now, the fuel system needs to be addressed immediately, if not sooner. I installed a clear fuel filter after the tank. In a little more than 100 miles it looked like a used tea bag hanging back there. Yeah, it's got rust issues. The rust plugs up the pickup tube and the car dies. Not fun.

The fuel system will have to wait a wee bit longer. Since I had a wee little lump of money I fired up the Imperial and set sail for the upholstery shop today. They gave me a nice quote on new seats. They will have to be vinyl because I don't have leather money. However, they should turn out nice.
Don't worry. When I begin the body work, I will pull the seats and store them inside until it's time for them to go back in the car. I also plan on pulling the body panels that will unbolt and work them one at a time. That will give me the room I need to get into and around the car while it's in my shop. Since I'm going back with black paint I can even shoot the panels one at a time.

This will be my first attempt at going this far with a car in order to make it look good. I learned quite a bit while building the hot rod. Now, I want to use what I've learned and build something that I will enjoy for years to come.

Stay tuned while I barge ahead.

Looks like a GM steering column and wheel. Got one in my '79 Maxivan.

I got a '77 NY once. Bought it at the JY for $400. I traded the body to one of our members for some 727 BB cores. I wished I had the time to fix it up. Red leather, gray/silver exterior.

There is a 70 ( maybe 71 ) Imperial in a local junkyard near me if you need something Imp only.

this car is also Black with 'I think' a white interior BUT it has a sunroof

There will be no saving this one though, It's been there so long it would probably come out in pieces if one tried to extract it from the mud it's sitting in

I couldn't really get detail on your seats in the picture. However, it looks as though the thread is gone, not that the leather is ripped. If I am right, why not strip the front upholstery and re-sew it. Even with some leather dye, that should save you a "wee" bit of money. You would probably save enough to fund some "Leatherique".

Trucker, the column in that coupe is factory. The same goes for the steering wheel. I believe they were Saginaw columns.

Faust, the fabric is wasted. Not only is the stitching coming apart but the panels are ripping and shrinking. It's seriously old dried up leather.

If you are serious about the Power Tour, let me know if you need a wingman. (Fellow Flying Fortress in Formation??) My '73 doesn't mind the long miles.

I'm dead serious about the Power Tour. I simply have to see how serious the Imperial is about the tour.

I'm dead serious about being your wingman. I think two Imps side by side, one gold one black, would look incredible. 12K lbs, and 40+ feet of car makes quite a visual statement.

Visual statement? More like a rolling roadblock!

Since my car is black and should have tinted windows should I put the presidentail flags on the fenders?

Not sure if you really want to be the POTUS right now, no one is really happy with the government at this point. Couldn't you just pretend to be a gangster? They have a higher approval rating, I'm sure.

Re: It's time to Pimp the Imp! - 09/28/11 12:49 AM

The seats are done!

The new seats have been in the Imperial for a few weeks. I simply haven't had time to post anything about it.

I really like the front seats. The edge of the driver's seat bottom looks a little funky but it doesn't bother me. Those head rests are molded plastic/rubber and are a bit shinier than the seat fabric. I asked the upholsterer to eliminate the stitching between the buttons. I didn't care for that and this is NOT a 100 point restoration.

The rear seats turned out well but look a bit deflated. I'm thinking about having her redo them. She told me the rear seat was built differently than the front. It only looked like a floating cushion due to the stitching. Even the buttons were different.
I really wish they had not dug out the nasty seat belts. I'll have to do something about those things. They're crusty and the metal bits are rusty.

I must say that they're incredibly nice when you're driving. I put just under 100 miles on the car in an afternoon and it really is like taking the recliner out for a spin.

Re: It's time to Pimp the Imp! - 02/02/12 07:16 AM

Time for a minor update.

I've replaced a window regulator and have the motor to fix the passenger front window. That should have all 4 working properly. The passengers vent window works on occasion. The drivers vent window has a working motor but the glass doesn't move.

I put a little tune on it last weekend using a vacuum gauge. Tonight, after 172 miles of combined city and highway driving, the car averaged 13.6 mpg. That's up from the 9.9 mpg it was doing before the tune.

With luck, this beast will be making the Long Haul on the Hot Rod Power Tour.

Re: It's time to Pimp the Imp! - 03/24/12 06:37 AM

It's time to start working on the Imperial again. The Power Tour isn't far away and there's a lot of stuff to be done.

I stuffed a set of 255/70-15 General Grabber HTS tires on it at work today. While I was under it, I checked out the suspension. The idler arm is shot as is most of the rubber but the joints are okay. I'll order a full rebuild kit from ESPO anyway.
Andrewh and I will put in some time after work on Saturday. We'll address some of the electrical issues and see what else we have time to do.

Things should start happening soon.

Re: It's time to Pimp the Imp! - 03/26/12 04:38 AM

The instrument panel is out of the car. The fuel gauge wasn't working. I now suspect it was a dead low fuel relay.
The cluster was nasty and needed a good cleaning anyway.
While it's out, I'll clean up the dash pad as best I can. It's been attacked with Simple Green and a scrub brush but it's still not clean.

Since the dash was out I picked up a new upper speedometer cable and new dash speakers.

Do you think there have been any advances in speaker design over the last 40 years?

This afternoon, I broke out the bumper stretcher and attacked the front bumper. The upper bar was bent down when I got the car. That pushed the center section of the grille down and made the headlight doors drag. When it came time for headlights I had to get out of the car and help them open.
After loosening the grille screws I ran straps around the bumper about a foot off center on each side. Then I hooked them on the engine hoist and gave it a mighty tug. While the bumper was higher than it should be, I beat the old bends relatively straight. When I removed the tension the bumper was right back where it should be. It's not perfect and the grille is still a bit low but everything lines up better. The headlight doors now work properly and don't drag.

Here's a quickie pic of the front bumper. You can look at the pic in my previous post for a before and after.

The last thing I did tonight was remove the rest of the vinyl roof. The old dead adhesive had a death grip on the roof but the DA running 80 grit made short work of it.
After stripping the roof there was plenty of bare metal. That just won't do in our humid climate so I broke out the Rustoleum and a 4" paint roller.

Yes, I painted the roof with a roller. What's it going to do? Make the roof look bad? There was only a a few inches of vinyl on each side of the roof and a ton of surface rust running down the middle.

A bonus was finding a new way to kill skeeters. All you have to do is roll some paint on your car at dusk and the skeeters all flock to it. Sadly, for them anyway, they get stuck in the paint. I'll be able to pick them out at my leisure tomorrow.
Chances are I'll put a second coat on the roof when I get home from work.

That's not a ton of work but it was enough for one day. The Imperial is slowly moving towards being a nice car again.

That bumper straightened out nice!

Re: It's time to Pimp the Imp! - 03/27/12 03:59 AM

Thanks.
It doesn't look quite as nice in the daytime. The center is a bit high and there's a dip above the driver's headlight.
Still, it's not bad for a 20 minute hack job.

Did you know that a 1972 Imperial front bumper laughs at a body hammer?

There are now a bunch of little tap marks on the back edge of the bumper but it did the trick. I wasn't willing to beat it mercilessly with a BFH.

Sort of an early version of the 5mph bumper?

How are those new tires treating you?

Re: It's time to Pimp the Imp! - 04/07/12 01:53 AM

With luck I'll be able to test those tires again this weekend.
I had the instrument panel out of the car to fix the gauges. I'll try to have everything installed again this weekend.

Re: It's time to Pimp the Imp! - 04/24/12 06:20 AM

I've had the 72 Imperial torn apart for a little while.

The last time I spoke of the car, I'd put new tires on it. The 255/70-15 look much better under the car than the 235/75-15. It's got much less of that pig on stilts look. I also put a few turns on the torsion bars to get the nose off the ground.
This thing had a problem with intermittent oil pressure and the gas gauge didn't work. Andrewh and I tore the cluster out to fix the gauge and do a little clean up work.
My clock was dead so it went to Clockworks (www.clockwks.com) for a rebuild. $62 later it was looking (and working) good.
I tore down the cluster to attack it with a toothbrush and cleaner. While it was open, I painted the gauge needles with Testors Florescent Orange paint.
The speedo cable would make noise every now and then so I stripped the cable and lubed it with some white lithium grease.
This weekend started out with Andrewh coming over so I could press in some new lower control arm bushings. Once that was done, we attacked the Imp.
The oil pressure thing was really bothering me so I pulled the pump. Sure enough, it was toast. It took most of the day to track down another pump and stuff it in there. Once in, the oil pressure problem was cured.
While I was messing with that, Andy ran an 8 gauge bypass from the alternator to the starter relay and then on to the battery while leaving the factory wiring intact.
Once those things were done, I pulled the driver's door panel to fix the outside handle and Andy ran a relay to guarantee the ballast resistor and voltage regulator saw true charging system current. The factory harness had more than 1 volt drop to the regulator and that could cause the system to over charge.
Sunday I had to fight the lawn monster and a heavy lack of motivation. Making up my mind that I would at least install the rebuilt clock, I went outside. The clock is in, the cluster is installed properly, the radio is back in, and the speedo is connected. That last bit was by far the most difficult despite having the cluster loose enough to move around.

I ordered a reman brake booster, master cylinder, all three brake hoses, and a new lower radiator hose. With luck, it will all be here for next weekend. My reman idler arm should be here as well. Once I get that stuff installed, I should be good to go mechanically and electrically.

If lady luck is smiling on me, I might be able to do something about air conditioning in May. It sure would be nice to have the life support working during a 2600 mile road trip in June.

Re: It's time to Pimp the Imp! - 05/09/12 02:55 AM

Everything's back in the car. Now the temp gauge doesn't work and my freshly repaired clock died. I'll have to send it back.
The car runs and drives nicely. It needs shocks badly. I'm chasing the car on curves in the highway, especially when they have bumps. I have a line on a set that I plan on installing Saturday.
The valve covers were leaking. One head had a bolt hole drilled and tapped oversize and into a water passage. That was the first really hacked thing I found on the car.

The A/C system had a wee bit of pressure in it. A vacuum test showed no leaks. I'll draw out the oil and recharge the system. With a little luck it just might blow cold. The heater core leaks so it will remain bypassed for now.

I found the transmission fluid leak and hope it is now contained.

The car is coming together nicely. I'm hoping it will be 100% on the Power Tour.

Re: It's time to Pimp the Imp! - 05/19/12 10:34 PM

Andrewh and I wired around the dead AirTemp servo today. I now have a three speed blower switch wired in as well as manual control of the clutch.
While idling in the shop at work the front A/C was blowing 37 degrees and the rear was blowing 39 degrees. I actually had to turn the blower speed down on the way home. It was getting cold in the car.

The compressor is rattling just enough to make the new belts jump. I'll tighten them up this afternoon and see what that does for the problem. It would be a sad thing to see the compressor go away after getting my little heart set on having life support for the Power Tour.

I'll try building a hump riding cup holder with a switch panel in it for the A/C controls. It should be a good project for Sunday.
