GTX project - 04/17/11 04:57 AM

Continuing to clean and slowly put correct. Daily driver so concentrating on basics first. Replaced the magnum 500's with these cragars I had and it rides soooo much better plus looks better in my opinion. Replaced front shocks, rerouted hood pin cables, put on front windshield trim and reset wiper arms today. Tomorrow I'll tackle dash wiring issues.

Car was painted in a backyard in the early 90's and he liked the later Roadrunner stripes and airbrushed them on. Color is FJ5 and looks good on car but found out today factory color wasn't green as thought but bahama yellow.

Looks really sweet. I can't wait until mine is a daily driver and I can work on the small stuff. Mine is the 72 Road Runner GTX project in this section. Keep the pics coming.

Thanks. Replaced fuel tank, fuel sending unit, master cylinder, pulled dash and put in new harness. Now all gauges work along with radio...yessss! But for some reason speedo not working? Is clipped back in but no movement? It's nice being able to listen to some fm tunes finally.

Was driving today and heard an audible pop and started feeling a shimmy when coming off the onramp from work. Pulled over and found left wheel play. Grabbed tire and shook back and forth and outer tie rod literally fell apart on side of road! Thank God it didn't do that before I pulled over, no telling what would have happened.

Nice car! Love the 71's. Bahama Yellow, you HAVE to paint it. Besides, I HATE the 72 stripes on a 71. Are the hood stripes coded on your fender tag?

I'm thinking of driving my 71 GTX this summer. (Transferring the plates off of my 71 RR) It's a numbers matching Black 4spd Dana car that is currently painted pearl white with cheezy flames. I was planning on restoring it first, but I think it would be more fun to bomb around in it the way it is first.

Any pics of your 4spd GTX? I'm thinking of getting my GTX out and ready for some light cruising. I bought it to restore, but its been in storage since 1998!

Have not located fender tag yet. Was told it might be in one of the boxes of parts I received...it does have the fender tag screws still there but no tag under hood. Not holding breath on finding tag either but hope find it. The guy liked the roadrunner look and 72 style stripes I guess lol. Will probably go bahama yellow down road when repainted but going to try and stay out of body for now and just drive heck out of...it's my everyday driver.

Fixed speedometer issue today...seems you HAVE to put the male cable end into the little hole to make it work lol not just screw onto trans. Also, fixed heater issues with a new heater control valve and rehooked up vacuum lines. Soooooo nice being able to control temp and where it comes out now. Car is coming along nicely.

Re: GTX project - 04/29/11 01:47 AM

Got rear ended by a big metal pole today...actually had went into a parts store today and right after I went in a guy walks in and asks "who here owns the green car?" Me I say..."well it just rolled across the parking lot into the pole" Guess I didnt have it in park all the way and it jumped out of gear and took off; wasnt running. Fit the gigantic pole just right of the license place taking out the bumper and probably the deck lid. Got into the trunk a little but that can be massaged back out fairly easily. Not a good day. One positive note though is the pole stopped car from going out into noon time St Louis Traffic.

Well, that's good to hear. I posted this same thing in the SRT8 Belvedere thread, "The best part about making repairs is that you can improve what you had done to the car before."

Re: GTX project - 05/15/11 01:55 AM

GOOD NEWS! Found fender tag!!!! Not bad news but kind of not so good news though found out it wasn't bahama yellow as told but GF3 Green. I actually found some of the green today also while gazing at a large paint chip on door could see some of the original green under multiple coats of paint. Not the most desirable color but very glad to have found tag.

Found out it came with a green interior as well. Currently sporting black interior.

Question also...what exactly are V21 and V7X codes. Know they are stripes of some sort but any pictures?

Re: GTX project - 05/16/11 05:44 AM

V21 is Performance hood treatment, aka stripes for a 1971. The stripe on your car is for a 1972 instead of a 1971 style. The V7X is for a black accent stripe down the side which is a pinstripe that follows the body lines on a 1971 GTX.

Re: GTX project - 05/17/11 02:05 AM

Thanks for the info. Yeah the guy that had it before me liked the 72 RR stripes better so painted those on it. Now the V21 are those the twin solid ones that run down to the front wheels or just the hashmarks within the recessed area on hood.

Well took some military leave and was going to replace driveline. That's on hold. Since damaged trunk awhile back and car got hit with some massive hail during thunderstorms in St Louis MO I decided to just go ahead and repaint car. Have been working but off getting ready and is just about there now. Going with a more correct 71 FJ6 Sassy Grass than the old FJ5 that was on it. Ordered new GTX stripe kit also to get away from the 72 roadrunner theme last guy had going on. Figured better use of free time to do this than driveline...which I am going to try and knock out after a couple weekends after painted. Wish me luck. Son refers to sassy grass as Ski Green

I have to say I am soooo proud of my 8yo son Anthony. He has been right there by dads side while at bodyshop. Every day has been at least 7hr days and he has not complained once. He can DA, block sand and tape with the best of them, I am so proud. He has helped out greatly and his eyes have spotted defects ole dad couldn't see. Thanks buddy I love you.
