Barn Find (sort of) '71 Charger SE - 10/24/10 05:00 PM

My son found this car just the other day. Its a 71 SE Charger 318, AT, AC, rear speaker audio, black bench car and magnum 500 wheels. Has 36,xxx original miles but has some rust from being from up north originally. Factory white but had been repainted silver grey sometime in past. Engine runs but past owner states blows oil out ps of engine. Besides paint this car is unmolested! It's neat. Bought today and dragging back today too. Interior is in beautiful condition also.

Just looked over fender tag...car was originally W3 Bright white and is coded for V6X...isn't this the superbee and rt longitudal stripes? I didnt think you could get them on any other models? It definately had them too because after looking it over I found remnants of the stripes in the door jam areas where stripes ended and curved around. Is this odd? Would have been a sharp car new.

A white 71 SE is a great looking car. Are you sure those aren't just dual pinstripes in the door jams? I see this thing with a 500 inch stroker, white paint, black canopy vinyl top and 15X8 rallye wheels!

Definitely not pinstripes as too big. I'll see if I can't get r.Seat out for codes. Gonna shine light up in fender/door areas and see if any remnants.

Re: Barn Find (sort of) '71 Charger SE - 10/26/10 03:04 AM

Just popped up my rear seat and found some good stuff: nice build sheet with a piece of paper with it embossed with guys name on it "EUGENE S. THURSTON" both found under springs, the factory paint/water test sheet with my cars vin and date of Oct.19, 1970. A long cardboard paint stick looking thing (no idea) and there were 3 coins tucked right under carpet edge together (2 quarters and 1 dime - all new and 1965). Good Stuff! Build sheet confirms all my options too - including trunk dress up kit and carpeted spare tire cover. Build sheet has typed on bottom remarks section "OIL UNIT" any ideas to this?

Brakes applied.......was going over buildsheet and saw color was different than my car and a couple other things different. Mainly that the vin was about 1000 after mine. CRUD!!!! This buildsheets car was optioned almost exactly like mine but different color K6. Well maybe I'll find another one up front under dash or front seats. At least paint dept pw is vin'd for mine.

Re: Barn Find (sort of) '71 Charger SE - 10/27/10 03:55 AM

Good news today guys...as stated earlier was told the engine spews out oil on passenger side. Was actually told "father in law told me engine is blown and has a big hole in side of engine that when he got it running covered his floor in oil. It's blown" Well since "blown" figured no harm in trying to turn over...threw in new battery and cranked. Turned over with no issues, noises, clunks or anything and actually sounded like ready to fire up. Upon inspection found just what his father in law did I suppose...oil all over ground. What did I find upon inspection? Well I did not find a hole or crack in engine but an oil filter with a small tear in it! YES! Going to change oil this weekend, filters and fuel pump then attempt to start off gas can. Wish me luck

more shots. I am utterly amazed at condition of original interior. Car has just under 36,ooo original miles and is a time capsule.

one more for the night...oh yeah with the interior shot, I have not even cleaned it or wiped it down with anything. Carpet is faded and cloth inserts on seats have some fading but with a little dye will look as new.

Re: Barn Find (sort of) '71 Charger SE - 10/27/10 04:49 AM

I think I know what grounded car. The left rear 1/4 panel is bent under from the car losing its rear wheel and going under car (this is why I am missing one roadwheel). Car looks like it literally ground to a stop taking with it the rear drum, half the backing plate, most of the lower shock/spring mount on drivers side. It has loose studs stuck in axle to move. It looks like this happened a long time ago. Tags expired in 80's. There is a bag full of brake parts in trunk also where it looks like someone was going to fix it but never got around to it.

Re: Barn Find (sort of) '71 Charger SE - 11/05/10 04:35 AM

Changed the oil and filter. Ran an new fuel line to a gas can, primed carb and turned over....VROOOOMMM! Fired right up with about 60 lbs of oil pressure and no leaks. Yea!!!! Did not run too long but long enough to blow out a ton of stuff out the exhaust and warm up just a little. sounds great. Heard no unusual noises and ran quiet through its stock single exhaust.

Re: Barn Find (sort of) '71 Charger SE - 11/15/10 12:27 AM

Have discovered she needs a full 1/4 and outer wheelhouse of ps and both front fenders replaced due to massive salt corrosion. Here's one of the ps with a new fender test fit today.

Re: Barn Find (sort of) '71 Charger SE - 11/15/10 12:33 AM

Engine is running great now too! Changed out fuel pump due to leaking and cleaning out my engine whew! Changed out oil/filter couple times and put some new fuel lines in also. Ran that Lucas fuel stuff through carb and in a can of fuel and original carb is working great!!!! Engine fires up on first crank and sounds healthy and doesnt overheat and maintains good oil pressure at idle.

You've gotta be one lucky guy, where'd you find such a nice fender? And an R/T fender to boot! Is there anything else left of the car you got the fender off of?

Re: Barn Find (sort of) '71 Charger SE - 11/17/10 04:22 AM

A buddy of mine had this one and a just as nice drivers side I was able to get off him very reasonably I think. He has about 3 more pairs I think I spotted stashed. The R/T the fender came off of he said had been totaled years ago and the owner parted out what was salvageable.

Re: Barn Find (sort of) '71 Charger SE - 11/17/10 04:31 AM

Pulled interior out to check floors and found great sheetmetal AND my cars buildsheet. Fender tag and buildsheet verify the V6X stripe now along with the stripe remnant under the repaint. Funny the other cars buildsheet that I found also was coded with the V6X stripe...I wonder if they did a run of these, it was optioned almost exactly like mine as well just a different color. Heres a shot of an r/t that motivated me to go back original with mine...

We were out looking at rental houses for my mother in law and he spotted next door to one of the places we checked out...wife and him went around back of rental place to see how it was and he comes running back to car yelling "Dad there's a Charger back there!" Got the car but not the place. Wife was amazed he knew what type it was...come on dear that's my boy!

Cut off old quarter and rusted areas and began test fitting new AMD quarter. Fits like a glove.

Pulled the old 8 1/4 rear out last week and rolled the 8.75 under it too! Here's another shot of the quarter. I still need to cut out some more metal down at rocker in front of tire but fitting great.
