rotisserie for the 65 4dr to 2dr

rotisserie for the 65 4dr to 2dr - 08/12/10 12:19 AM

I got really tired of working on my back....so I rounded up some 10g tubing , 3ton rams, 1k casters and welded up a rotisserie. I did my best to try to copy the one Eastwood sells. I think it's called an autotwirler?
I tried to make mine as light as possible, It's just for blasting and painting shell's . I would think it wouldnt be very safe with a drivetrain on the shell or any heavy parts on the body, but it feel's very solid and work's great. It was alot of fun to make.......but now the real fun can start building this 65 ply sedan.

Re: made a rotisserie for the 65 - 08/15/10 05:03 AM

Well I'll try to give you guy's a little bit of history first. I bought a 65 2dr sedan post from the b-body postings of moparts and had it shipped to my house. The car was a total waste of money!!! I spent way to much money for that car. Everything on it was junk....it was rotted-out,smashed and full of bondo. I think the glass was even rusty!!!lol. After looking the car over I decided it would be less work for me to just find a cheap 4dr and do a 4dr-2dr conversion.
Well here's what I got.

Re: made a rotisserie for the 65 - 08/16/10 02:19 AM

But the trunk was rusted out.
I saved a good trunk section from a 65 4dr coronet and started welding that in a while ago... today I worked on that.

I second that! I've talked to a couple guys who have done this and they said it was fairly easy but there's nothing like watching it step by step. I've got the cars, I got the parts....I even bought the Spit to start the cooking " Show Us the Way"

No doubt! There are tons of 4 doors out there that are rust free candidates for this and dirt cheap compared to their 3 door counterparts!

Re: rotisserie for the 65 4dr to 2dr - 08/18/10 11:36 PM

I dont fully understand the conversion. I understand I would need a set of doors. But do I also need a donor car for door jams? Or once the doors are in place, do you use the rear doors and if so, would you not need jams that match up to the front door???

Re: rotisserie for the 65 4dr to 2dr - 08/19/10 01:28 AM

Just to let you guy's know.....4dr's and 2dr's are the same . You will find that seams, spot welds , layer's of metal , w.b. and all the other little thing's are the same between the two model's. The factory just shortend the front door, ran the door sill down to the rear wheelwell , added a center post and smaller rear door. Just a quick way, for the factory to make a 4dr, without changing to much.
Here's a few crude exsamples as far as how it work's out.
Now Ive seen many different way's of doing this conversion......everyone has there own way of doing thing's .
I will go into great detail in the metal work at a later date , but for now Im trying to finish up on welding in a new trunk pan.....thats were the spit is paying off.

Re: rotisserie for the 65 4dr to 2dr - 08/23/10 02:20 AM

wow great job on the 65, I see your in the Twin Cities area do you know Larry H from JIT Powdercoating?I got my 66 Belvedere Sedan from him, good guy who has lots of knowledge of 62-69 B-bodies....he has a 4 door 64 Dodge I would love to get and do a 2 door conversion,I think that is the latest trend in the 62-65 B-bodies as the supply of nice 2 door sedans has dried up....

Re: rotisserie for the 65 4dr to 2dr - 08/23/10 03:55 AM

Yes , I think I know him.... a couple of years ago I bought a clean 65 coronet fender from him. Awhile ago ,he had a clean pair of bench seat tracks for a 65 sedan for sale on c.l. I wish I would of bought them.
I think he had a 64 or a 65 sedan at the time too, and he was unhappy with the paint job on it.
It's getting harder and harder to find any good early b-body parts around the twin-cities area worth buying. I just made a 400 mile round trip for a semi-good hood ......4dr's are the answer!!!!

Re: rotisserie for the 65 4dr to 2dr - 08/25/10 11:36 PM

Well ,I took a break on the trunk and worked on the new hood. The new hood had been smashed in on it's right side edge. First, I worked the basic shape back into it,then I had to cut some of back brace out and hammer and block the edge back into it.Then weld and grind it back. I now have a nice straight edge on the side of the hood. I hope the hood fits good on the car!!! Will find out later ......Back to welding and grinding in the trunk.

Re: rotisserie for the 65 4dr to 2dr - 09/21/10 06:30 AM

Great project! I did this to my wagon to make a 2dr. Getting ready to probably to it to my sons car (63 dodge 330) since his 2dr is soooo far gone and our 4dr parts car is really nice.

Heres a shot of my wagon as of just the other day...was driving up until about 7 months ago. I pulled it back off road and apart to do better.
