70 Road Runner Convertible Restoration - 04/30/10 12:31 PM
I thought I would post a couple of before and half way pictures. (similar to before and after pictures)
I haven't posted in a while because I spent the last 9 months welding on my car, going through a spool of wire and about 4 bottles of gas
I usually spend one full day a week in the garage to unwind. So I am estimating that it took approximately 300 hours of metal work to get it to the point of sending it out for final body / paint.
Here's a before shot.....

It is absolutely amazing what you're doing to bring this old girl back from the edge of the grave. Please don't lose the great momentum that you've developed so far and please keep us in the loop on the impresive work that you're putting into her.

Hi Joe,
The RR project came with most of the metal to replace the rot. I did the entire interior floor replacement with 5 original pieces that came with the project.
I would have done just one pan, but my goal was to use all the parts car metal that came with the car instead of buying new.
The cuda is still at my friends shop as a shell. He has been working on it a couple hours a week.
I just sent the RR to a local restoration shop for the body paint. I hate to do it becauses its gonna be 3x the price, but I want to get something finished to drive next year!

I restored the console today. I took the wood grain insert out of the front portion and it looks like it was just put over a 68 console?
Is that how ma mopar did it, or did someone get crafty with it?

That's interesting about the console
I put new seat covers on the front and back seats this weekend.
I still need to get some wrinkles out. It seems every time I do seats, I have to go back in to get wrinkles out.
Probably cause I didn't buy new foam?

I'm also doing the dash frame restoration. Here's an update pic.
I still have to put new decals on the gauge faces before installing the instrument cluster.

Looks great as usual! Some questions:
1. Is the dash outline paint by hand?
2. What's the second light by the dash reverse light for?
3. What color was your original carpet and what color are you going to go with?

. I did the outlines with silver paint pen and the lettering with white out. The second dash light is a seatbelt warning. I will be doing blaCk carpet like original.

It's amazing how well those paint pens work. I remember trying to do stuff like hat with a brush years ago and I don't have that steady of a hand. It was painstakingly long. With those pens, you can almost zip right around in no time.
Seats and dash look really nice.

Mine doesn't have the seatbelt light. Do you have standard (mine) or deluxe (push button) seatbelts? Also I do not have a console.

I'd have to check. I bought the car as a project and the seat belts are all rolled up in a bag somewhere.
Is your car a bench seat or column shift with buckets? Mine is buckets and console.
Any pics of your car Coffeeman?

Well, I thought I was through with the welder on my project when......
My friend stopped by this weekend and he said "Hows your convertible top frame"?
I told him rust free. He said, did you check under the existing top where it sits on the header panel? They all rust there.
Well we checked together and sure enough, I dragged the welder out today

My friend showed me that you can feel for the rust by pushing the top with your thumbs where it meets the header.
I could feel the soft spots. So I cut away the top to repair them.

I was thinking about that and wondering if you could press and feel for it. Keep you from cutting a really nice top away unnecessarily.

Yep, feels soft and kinda like rice krispies. My top needs replacing, but I was gonna leave it for last. Now that its slit, I have to move it up on the list when I get the car back from the body shop.

I got the bumpers back from Tri-City plating this week.
They look great. $750 for both. The shipping added another $75.
I dropped them off at Carlisle in July. So it took about 6 weeks to get them back to me. That's what they estimated.
Posted By: jrwoodjoe
Re: 70 Road Runner Convertible Restoration - 09/05/10 12:35 PM
Bumper looks GREAT! TRI-CITY isn't too far from me. I think their prices may have gone up in the last year or two.
I've been thinking of taking mine over to them one day and dropping them off. It would save shipping.

Yeah Joe, They turned out awesome. Way cool that you're close to them. Definitely try them out.
I have a chromer that has done some small parts for me in Philly (Frankford plating). But they wanted that much for just one bumper.
I needed to send mine out, because I don't think they reproduce them.

That would be great if we could touch base on our cars. I would love to see one up close thats not in pieces, so it will help me with getting mine back together when its time.

Its still gonna be a while. I was told 4 to 6 months when I dropped it off in May. It looks like closer to 6 months. But I've been promised to have it back by the end of the year. That should give me ample time to assemble it for the spring.

awsome car!!! you'll have the rest of winter to install the interior,, and drive this summer!!! Just AWSOME!!!
oh, on the seats,, YES, USE new foam, and do it on a HOT day, or use a heat gun/hair dryer, and keep the skins inside to acclimate, by a register,,
when you install them, i use a few clips to install, then put them near a register/ for a few minutes, or really heat them up ALL OVER, then finish hog ringing them, while streching them, looks great!!

Hi Roger,
I was going to keep the wheels black with center caps. I might change that cause the lil woman already doesn't like the black wheels.
I have a like new set of magnum 500s in the garage. But they have new redlines on them. I'm not sure how that would look?
Hey, there was an exact match to the vert you were looking at that just went for 58k on one of the televised auctions. 4 speed sublime with white top and gut. I forget if it was RM or Russo and steele auctions.

Looking good Tom. Don't feel bad about the windshield screw thing. I'm sure I'm going to have to redo some stuff as I go also. I put the rear lights in mine yesterday then just this morning realized that I didn't ensure I had a good ground anywhere.
I've got to go out today and see if the housings are grounding or not.
Car looks great, I think the Magnum's would look good on it. I'm like you about the Redlines though. Not sure how that would look. You could paint your steel wheels EK2 also.
Oh, keep the wife happy for sure.

Re: 70 Road Runner Convertible Restoration - 02/03/11 07:08 PM
Looks fabulous! I like the black wheels and raised white lettering, even without the caps. Let her pick out a set of cool wheels for show time and keep the steelies for driving (since the credit card is already maxed, what's a little more maxed?
By the way, is there a 'rule' for when the sheet metal behind the grill gets blacked out (paint) or left body color? I think for light cars it gets blacked but I don't don't know about orange cars.
Man that car looks good...next winter for sure I'll start mine!

Re: 70 Road Runner Convertible Restoration - 02/04/11 03:25 AM
The consensus on this board is that all but the darkest got the blackout. Here's a link, search on 'blackout' for more. They also say it should look sloppy, krylon spray painted by a "drunken crack monkey" (no kidding). I like the masked and professional look to that Citron one you posted.
https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...rue#Post5875496My FK5 burnt orange has the blackout (look beyond the rust
) and a mysterious whitish primer look at the very bottom of the core support

Looking good;
1) Car should have blackout. I'm not convinced any color other than black DIDN'T get the blackout but it could depend on year and plant. My Lynch Rd. EF8 Dark Green Metallic car had the blackout....this one for sure should have it.
2) sucks about the dash bolts, but do it right and take the window out......trust me.

Re: 70 Road Runner Convertible Restoration - 02/05/11 02:09 AM
That looks like a brand new windshield, so if it were mine....I'd pay the glass man to come take it out and put it back in. See if he can drink a whole cup of coffee in the 2 minutes it will take you to install the dash!
When you install the dash, sand the backside of one of the bottom legs down to bare metal, and do the same to the area that it bolts to on the body near the kick panel. Coat it with silicone dielectric grease before you stick it on the bolts. That way you will insure yourself of a good solid ground for the dash frame. I know you're thinking
but it only take a small amount of bare metal on each piece to make a good ground. It doesn't even need to be big enough to show once the dash is bolted on. Don't forget to tape the engine compartment side of the bolt holes on your radiator support before you paint them....DAMHIK
Your car is looking great. Glad you got it home safe and sound.

Don't hate me............ I went in underneath with 1/4" steel blind rivets. This is the exact scenario for blind rivets. When you can't get to the other side.
I couldn't help myself. It was so easy and I didn't want to have to take the windshield out.

Thanks for the nice compliments guys, I'm working hard to get er going by the summer.
The entire floor was replaced in 5 sections. I did lap weld stitching from the top with about a 1/4" overlap with seam sealer on the bottom.
The car has no flex when I jack it up or stand inside. So I didn't go with any additional frame ties.

Working my way through the brakes. I bought the brake lines from fine lines. I thought I told them exactly what I had, but some stuff still came in wrong.
It should be a one piece brake line from front to back, but it came in two. So I call and they don't offer an explanation or a union. So I have to come up with one.
I did run the exhaust today and its looking good. The Accurate fit is awesome.

Thats cool about the back seat. It went in pretty easy.
I still have to paint the rear panels. I have the original white ones but after cleaning, its apparent that they need to be sprayed. Should they be white or off white???
Also, the wiring harness I have had lights going to each of those panels. Do they get lit on a convertible?
I don't see where????

Hi Joe,
I'm going to overhaul the front and rear brakes, black out the front and install the grill. Then front lighting wiring harness and lights.
I need to get the trim and window stuff back from the chromer and then have the top put on.
I also have a small punch list of things to finish. I need to helicoil one trans to bell bolt. stuff like that. I've been using the final assembly list and I'm about 90% done.
I see you posted an update on your thread. Looking real good!!!!

I'm not 100% sure, but I think all 'Runner 'verts got that lighting... It may have been part of a light package that was standard on RM23 cars... Is there a map light or trunk light? Your car looks sweet... I miss my '69

All convertibles got the rear lights. I picked up a similar car to yours, k2 with black guts and top. 383 4 speed car, but has a new 440 6 barrel in it.....And a its a 70 runner convert. I will be finishing it and putting it on the market.

I'm not even sure what the right finish should be. I cleaned up what came with the project and installed it. It looks pretty good.
My main goal is to get er running and get the bugs out for Carlisle. I'll research the grille and refinish it at a later date
Can you let me know what is correct?

I'm working on the front end of a GTX which has a chrome trim that surrounds the grill. Is this a "GTX" thing or did Road Runners have them too? Yours looks odd without it

That's the satellite colored configuration. The RR grill center bars are dark charcoal and the outside surround is light argent IIRC. I'm sure someone will chime in.
And yeah, where's the stainless/chrome trim that is on the fenders, hood, and falance under the grill?

That's more like it, but it's not right. That's black/silver.
The inside part of the grille is like a dark argent/charcoal and the outline part is a light argent. The rings around the headlights are also the lighter argent to match the outside ring.
See attached. This is painted by my buddy who has owned and restored MANY '70 RR's. We just recently had a discussion over the colors, he knows his stuff..

Cool, did not know the correct color config. The new grilles being wrong just adds to the confusion.
I'll definitely finish the grille, but not sure If I'll get to it before Carlisle.
BTW, all the chrome and stainless is still at the chrome plater. I should have it back by May.

Re: 70 Road Runner Convertible Restoration - 04/14/11 12:29 PM
I upholstered the rear interior panels. I didn't know they come in as vinyl fabric with the padded backing.
I thought they would have come in on a hard backing board ready to install, similar to the door panels.
So I stripped my old panels and installed the new vinyl.
It appears the old panels had the right color, but a different design. Maybe GTX or Satellite?
Old.....

I did turn the key and it cranks fine, so that felt good
I want to get it running and inspected by the end of the month. That way I can drive it over to get a top put on.

My fender tag has B51 for power brakes. I would think it would also have a B41 if it was a factory disc brake car?
At any rate, it had front discs when I got it. The last inspection on the car is 1985. So if it was converted, it was done before 85 when 1970 stuff was available.
The rotor that was on there was a two piece hub and rotor.

Re: 70 Road Runner Convertible Restoration - 05/11/11 09:13 PM
I thought I would post an update since its been a couple of weeks. I'm kinda stuck now.
I'm waiting on the top installer to get the top delivered to his shop. I'm told it will be there in a couple of weeks.
I'm waiting on the chromer so I can get the door windows done and all the stainless on. I'm told by him that he is almost done and I can pick it up next week.
I did get the sunvisors in from Dante today. So I'm gonna put them on. And I want to change out the oil in the rear.
I installed all the seat belts last week.
Member 68SportSatvert is hooking me up with the correct rear view mirror.
My turn signals are a little funny. They work great but the passenger side markers don't come on or blink when signaling right. Hazard lights work fine. So I ordered a new turn signal switch. Waiting on that to come in.
Need to get the car aligned and inspected.
I got the car registered and tagged this week. I also submitted for a vanity plate.
I'm still hoping to make Carlisle
In the meanwhile, its spring. So I did a weeks worth of yard work and I opened the pool

great stuff Tom.....I would go over all the signal grounds. When I finished my GTX the side markers and tail lights were problematic due to the new paint which served as a great insulator preventing the grounds that are required.

Will do, I'll go over them grounds again. Just seems odd that the hazards blink good, but turn signals don't blink the passenger side markers front or back.
The side markers blink with the hazards and its all the same body wiring.

I had them take out the small dings and bends. But they weren't to bad to begin with.
All trim polished and pot metal chromed.
I used Frankford plating. They have had a couple bad reviews but I went with them for a couple of reasons.
1- They did work for me a couple of years ago and the stuff turned out good.
2- They are 35 minutes away. So I could stop in at any time if needed.
They turned everything around in 8 weeks. So I was happy

Very nice work! I'm just a little behind you on my 70RR conv restoration. I'm working the inner windshield trim. I posted this in the resto forum but since it looks like you just tackled this...
Basic question is how the upper inner portion of the plastic pillar molding is fastened. There is a hole in the corner piece which lines up with the screw hole in the plastic piece, but no corresponding hole in the pillar itself.

Your not going to believe this. I remember also being confused by that. Then I figured it out and blew through it. That was only a month ago and now I can't remember again.
I think it was a special fastener to back up the screw. Metal and rectangular shaped.
My car has been at the top installer since the 3rd. The installer said, difficult but coming along nicely.
When I get it back, I will look at this for you. But almost positive its a metal clip thats rectangular in shape that goes behind there.

Yes, and its good you have them. I'm sure it would be hard to come up with a set.
My car came to me as a project. Thank goodness the previous owner bagged and tagged nicely. Even so, it took me awhile to figure out I needed them there.
Your car is looking awesome. I'm surprised how nice these b body verts ride. Your gonna love it.

I picked up the car today from the upholstery shop.
M & A Upholstery in West Chester did an awesome job with the top.

I've got a small punch list to take car of too.
The starter likes to stick sometimes. The top switch is sporadic. The hood needs to be alligned with two people. The emergency brake not holding etc etc...

The car looks awesome Tom, they did a great job on the top. Some restoration activities are best left to the professionals. Enjoy the ride keep the pictures coming. Any new projects in your sights?

Thanks Dennis, No new projects on the way. Just need to finish an old one. This is my 70 Cuda. It got stalled due to human factors that were out of my control.
However, work has started again. Looks like it won't be long before its ready for paint.

Very cool Dave. Sounds like your a shift worker like me? I got all the heavy stuff done on the RR, but I think my Cuda will be back by the winter.
I would deeply appreciate a hand when it comes time to putting the drivetrain back in the Cuda. Its tough doing things like that by myself on a weekday because no one is available
The RR trans install nearly killed me. I'm realizing that I'm not as strong at 47 as I was at 27

What's the scoop on your vent frames?? I heard that you need to install the door glass and vent frames together as one assembly... That's what I've heard from two people..
Boy am I glad I remembered you saying this. Well I remembered about 1/2 hour into it.
I installed the vent frames today and they went in easy after I tried with the window glass in.
Thanks for that tip as well as using epoxy to glue the vent frames in

I think the one side of the vent window frame gets polished while the other side gets chromed.
So you need to take the inner frame out of the one side of the outer frame that gets chromed.
The inner frame is attached by studs that get peaned over. So its not always an option to use the original studs that were peaned over.
ONe way to get around this is to use epoxy and glue the inner frame to the outer frame. I used this method and its solid as a rock.
Here is a link to a good thread with pictures.

Thanks John, I got the door windows in today and the car is inspected and ready to go to Maple Grove and Carlisle.
I still need to adjust the vent frames for a nice fit as well as put the small vent windows in. But I'm getting closer to finishing off the punch list

Ok Guys, I'm going to officially close this thread.
The car is running good. I still have a couple things to do but nothing that should prevent me from hitting some shows.
So thanks again for the comments, encouragement and parts
