1974 360 4 Speed Road runner - 11/23/09 02:02 AM

We finally got my 1974 RR finished just a day before it was to be at Mopars at the Mansion. There was a lot of education from this project and I would like to help anybody out there doing one with what was learned.

I have not spent a lot of time on this web board and I am not sure how to post a photo of the project.

It looks good. Did you photo document it as the work went along. If you did & can post it as it developed that will of big help to many of us. Again the car looks very good

Re: 1974 360 4 Speed Road runner - 11/23/09 02:44 AM

The car was found near Kingman AZ out in the middle of nowhere. Fortunately it was a an almost rust free car. There was some rust in a couple spots around the rear window and on the dutchman. The car had an aftermarket vinyl top added and water got in around the edges. The bad part was the factory sunroof panel. It was just a rusty frame. The previous owners repair was to screw a piece of Plexiglas on the roof. Yuck.

The car was done at Restorations By Rob in Buckeye, AZ www.restorationsbyrob.com

His work is just awesome and his attention to detail is amazing. The 74 RR as it was delivered to Rob

As you can see, there is not much sunroof insert left to work with.

Re: 1974 360 4 Speed Road runner - 11/23/09 06:49 AM

This is what we started with for the interior. Legendary supplied the goods, but we had to use a regular headliner and get extra material to make the sunroof headliner. The problem was the bows did not line up.

Re: 1974 360 4 Speed Road runner - 11/23/09 06:56 AM

The metal work that needed to be done was minor from the rust stand point, but there were a lot of holes to fill in from the aftermarket sunroof trim.

Re: 1974 360 4 Speed Road runner - 11/23/09 07:01 AM

This was the worst rust damage. We found a guy that had cut out parts of the back window of a 73 Satellite and was selling the pieces on Craig's List. $40 for the right shape metal was a bargain. From there it was standard replacement procedure.

Re: 1974 360 4 Speed Road runner - 11/23/09 07:07 AM

There were plenty of screw holes to weld when the Plexiglas went to the trash too. These sunroofs are hard to find. But let me clue you in on a secret. American Sunroof Company was the contractor for these B-Body sunroofs and they can be found in junkyards in C-Bodies and in Cadillacs. Yep, many big GM cars used this very same complete sunroof. I was lucky when a good friend found a near new condition complete sunroof assembly at the Spring Fling for $150.

Under the hood is an interesting detail, and maybe somebody out there can help me. As you can see, the air cleaner snorkel is oval. That is correct for a 1974. But it is a short snout, which is an A-Body 360 air cleaner. I would like to find a correct long snout B-Body 1974 360 4V air cleaner. I have a VERY nice A-Body air cleaner to sell or trade when I find the right one.

Re: 1974 360 4 Speed Road runner - 11/24/09 04:32 AM

We needed the "Buttons" that raised up the sunroof into closed position. Tried to fab some up, but that did not work well. Then stumbled upon a mid 70s New Yorker. It was the same sunroof and had the buttons and a couple other seals that worked perfect. It looks like 76 -78 Caddies have the very same sunroof. That is not a 100% confirmation but the inserts appear to be correct for a Mopar. One of these days I will take my leftover frame assembly and accuaratly measure it. My information originally came from a retired American Sunroof person.

Does that air cleaner have the flap in the bottom? I have pictures of a '74 360 long snorkel flapper on my air cleaner page but don't have any pictures of a '74 a-body one or confirmation of the flap status.

The 73 and 74 RRs are due for some respect. Not much was made in 73 and 74 to feed the needs of muscle and most of them have gone away. Not many are willing to spend the money and time to bring them back to life. Nice ride you have there as well.

Thank you for the compliments. Restorations by Rob should get all the credit for how it came out. Of all my projects over the many years, this is the first one I took somewhere to get done start to finish. Rob is one that you can trust to do it right and on time. These 73 / 74 Road Runners are full of oddities that made it challenging, but teamwork got'er dun! It took a lot of help from the Mopar Family out there to find parts and make parts. It could not have been completed with their help.

That car is amazing, It is also the only other 360 4 speed I have ever seen other than mine. Mopar Muscle article
Mine is originally JA5 silver with a black stripe but the previous owner did all the body and paint then lost interest. When I bought it all the pieces of the car were in boxes in the trunk. I too have the short snorkel air cleaner.

Nice to have a "Sister" car out there. We are few.
You too have a very nice ride! These Iso-K Frame cars do have nice highway manners. I had a JA5 74 RR before this one, but is was a 318 car that had been converted to a 440. I sold it to a Non-Mopar guy and he painted it white.

I wonder if the short snorkel one might be correct, at least for some cars. I have pictures of a restored '74 'Cuda 360 and it has the short snorkel air cleaner. As well as a Challenger.

Re: 1974 360 4 Speed Road runner - 11/30/09 05:51 PM

Good question. I do not have that piece of air cleaner knowledge for sure. But now that the question is out there, What is correct????

Anybody out there in Mopardome have some input???

Should a 1974 Road Runner have a long or short snorkel air cleaner?

1974s only have oval air intakes on the snorkel. That much we know.
Posted By: NicksGarage

Re: 1974 360 4 Speed Road runner - 11/30/09 06:55 PM

And they have the OSAC valve on them.

So having the long oval snorkel, flap in the floor, OSAC valve, and being orange, I would think that it would be correct for a '74 performance car. Just not a lot of survivors out there to go by.

Cool car man, and great job with the resto! Interesting that the sunroof I had a '74 Charger SE 440 auto sunroof car a few years ago, I sold it to free up some funds for other projects. The guy I sold it too still has it, I'll have to let him know about the caddy sunroofs.

The poor old 73/74 era was almost totally forgot about. Even most of the Mopar people looked disinterested with them. But they are the last gasp of an era gone by. I am happy to see more of them popping up in ads and for sale. They are not easy to do and not a lot of NOS or reproduction parts are out there. But through a friend of mine we convinced an aftermarket mfg to reproduce the rear bumper filler strip and side pieces for 73 /74s. Look for that to be available soon!

My first one was an A5 Silver 74. I sold it to a Chevy guy and he promptly painted it white! It is now in a pile mostly and he wants to sell it, but can't find a buyer. Everybody that looks at it wants to know why he painted it. Chevy guys just don't understand. If it had been a basket case that might have been different, this was a nice well optioned original car that ran and drove nice!

I agree 100%. I've owned my '73 Dart Sport 340 since 1976 and it's undergone a complete, ground-up restoration. The Dart is a true TX9, black on black California car. I've never had it decoded by Galen (although I've done the decoding myself), but I imagine it's a pretty rare car, too.

It's about time people got over this silly notion, promoted in recent years by the car magazines, that the "muscle car era ended in 1972." No one denies that performance took a significant hit after 1971, but the later cars were far from being "boat anchors." After all, the term "performance car" is relative.

I'm always amazed when magazines fawn over a '72 340 car (240 net hp) and talk about it's hot performance engine, but then turn around and refer to a '73 340 car (same 240 net hp) as a "smogger." This just shows how ill-informed some of these "experts" truly are.

Anyway, I love the '74 Roadrunner. Great job on the restoration!

I love the 73 and 74 Satellite/RoadRunner body style. Very nice looking. My first Mopar was a 74 Charger with a 440. Not exactly the same, but I agree about the ride. A friend of mine is currently restoring a 74 RoadRunner GTX, red with white strip and white interior, 440, bench seat, auto-on-column. Judging by his previous restorations, it should come out very nice. Can't wait till he's done with it.

Your blue 74 360 4 speed RR is beautiful. I know I'd love to own it!

It would be nice if the after-market would wake-up and realize there are plenty of '72 and newer owners who are trying to restore their cars, and have cash in hand to spend on reproduction parts. Unfortunately, this situation will never end as long as the so-called muscle car "experts" keep telling the hobby that anything newer than a '72 isn't worth bothering with...

All too familiar story. I seem to gravitate to things that are hard to restore. I have parted out several 73/74 RRs and Satellites when I lived in Iowa. Their value is going up. More and more people are starting to like them. I have a very nice offer on the table for mine but I have too much heart and soul in it to accept the offer. And it is a blast to drive. They have such good street manners. I really think I would have spent less money doing a 69.

Yes they are overlooked and are just as nice as the 71/72 models (except engine choices). My brother had a Black 73 with white stripes and Black interior 318 auto car. At the same time one of my friends here had a Black 73 with Red stripes Red interior with a big block Auto.

They were both good looking cars but rusted out very quick for no older than the cars were. This was like 1980 or 81.

I've got a 73 RR sitting in the back garage right now. It was a 318 3 speed car, FE5 red with black gut. It's now painted 92 Viper Red and is waiting for my f-i-l to come and get it and put it back together. I sold it to him about ten years ago and if he gets to it, won't be long before it's back on the street. It will be a rough to drive car. Manual trans, manual brakes, manual steering with a 500+ horse 440.
