1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe 6.1 Hemi/6 speed - 07/14/09 08:58 PM

Bought this car off Craigslist. I searched for over a year before finding this N code B5 Gran Coupe in Fredonia, Ks. I took the day off work and was pleased to find a solid E body with perfect cowl/frame rails and super solid floor/pans (only minor pinholes). It sports a 20+ year repaint and has some filler in the quarters. I did not get a grill, interior, or engine, but it was too clean to pass up and had a clean title. I have since purchased interior cores, a '70 383 and '70 440, 2 grills, and lots of odds and ends. I hope to start on it this summer once I have completed my MBA.

Welcome to Moparts!

Lots of knowledgeable folks and good people here that will be able to help you if you run into a problem or have questions. Really looks like a nice solid car to work with. Can't wait to see the progress. Best of luck on the MBA.

It's nice to start off with something solid, what color inside and outside are you going with?

Re: 1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe 383 - 07/15/09 02:34 PM

I plan to keep the exterior the same B5 Blue. It originally also had blue interior, but I have not decided whether to go with blue or black inerior. What do you think?

Great find! You have a good start on a nice car. What is your goal ? A driver or serious restoration? Is the car equipped with A/C? Black is nice, and hot with no A/C.

My dart is originally B3 with blue interior, id love to have the interior restored if i wasnt makin it into a race car. Id say do blue interior, be different. Looks like a nice solid car, id put it together and drive as is

looks like a great project. I'm parcelle to black myself. It's soooo much easier to find parts. but a blue/blue car is sweet. keep the pics comming!

Re: 1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe 383 - 07/16/09 01:07 PM

I think the blue interior would look good also, but it's up to you what you would like best.

Thanks for the pic's, that will be a very nice car when your finished!!

Re: 1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe 383 - 07/16/09 06:16 PM

I like the idea of blue/blue, but finding parts would be hard/costly. I have a bunch of nice black panels. Maybe I will do a mix of the 2, because I like both. It had A/C from the factory-I just need to round up some more parts. I want a nice driver/cruiser when its done. If its too nice, I won't drive it...

Re: 1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe 383 - 07/17/09 03:49 AM

You won't find used blue interior panels that aren't chalky, your best bet is to find black ones and have them all dyed blue. It will look nice with the blue on blue and that's the way I would do it.

Re: 1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe 383 - 07/21/09 02:22 PM

Would I give someone a new blue interior piece and have them color match it or could I order the correct blue dye from somewhere?

Sweet pics of it outdoors.

You get moved into the new house yet?

Re: 1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe 383 - 07/21/09 04:51 PM

A good paint store could match some dye for you. I have found that blue, green and white E-body interior panels are especially bad for self destructing.

Re: 1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe 383 - 07/21/09 09:10 PM

That's what I am scared of. The car will be garaged, but the garage won't be heated or cooled. I love the blue interior but I am scared of it self destructing much faster than the black.

Mark-We did get moved in to the new house and the car never spent a night outside in the process.

OK-so I finally finshed my MBA just in time to have my second child. I guess there will never be a good time to work on this thing so I am just having to MAKE some time. So after 2 years, I removed the bumpers, grill support, and fenders and started stripping the undercoating with a propane torch and a scraper. I am more and more encouraged with how solid the car is. Usually I get more and more discouraged...

Re: 1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe 383 - 05/06/10 05:55 PM

The engine bay is pretty solid as well. 5 or 6 welds pinning the inner fener to the driver's shock tower need redone. Other than that, the bay just needs to be stripped and painted.

I helped my uncle restore one of those but the one I did was a convertible, N-code 383 auto, B5 paint, B-5 interior, white top, loaded with options, Rallye dash, console, buckets, leather, PT,PS,PB,CC,AM/FM,Chrome Sport Mirrors, Rim Blow, Road Wheels, front Rubber bumper, etc. The blue interior looks REALLY nice, I'd stick with it.

Re: 1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe 383 - 11/20/10 08:18 PM

It would have been a tough looking ride if I had just gotten it driving but there was too much I could not live with (rusty engine bay, rattles, etc) Once I started to dismantle I just figured I would do it all the right way.

It really was quite solid by Kansas standards-near pristine by Michigan standards (HA HA!). I could have gotten by with much less cutting. Also most of the rust you see is surface rust or in places you would never see (behind quarter panels, behind seam sealer, behind dash, bottom side of rear filler panel, around tail panel, etc). My camera is really cheap and likes to highlight/amplify rusty red colors. I just can't stand to do half baked projects if I can help it at all ($$$$$). It will be nice someday...

And no, I am not doing the welding. A friend of mine is a phenomenal fabricator and will be welding in all new AMD quarters, extensions, one piece trunk pan, all floor pans, gutters, rear filler panel, and tail panel.

Cool. Good to hear you are still going at it and that you haven't let it beat you. I will be doing the same in about a years time.. Mine is sitting in a storage facility. I didn't learn with the 1st one,12+ years ago. I figured I'd put myself through it again..

Re: 1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe 383 - 02/14/12 04:39 AM

The car is finally making some progress. The last picture was a mock up to find the right ride height. After that, the tail panel came back off. I decided to go with custom frame rails. from the engine firewall to the the rear. The frame rails will be moved in a few inches for more tire space and the rails will be moved up into the car for clearance issues. Instead of doing coil overs in the rear, I have decided on bagging the rear for ease of adjustment and loading issues. Here are some pics of the new frame rails being fit.

Here is my parts car-a 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8. It doesn't look that bad, but it was in a head on collision on highway 70 that bent the front frame rails to the firewall and buckled the floor. I am using the engine, 6 speed transmission, and pedals in the Barracuda. I also used this Challenger to get my black 2010 Challenger SRT8 back on the road (I bought it as a theft recovery missing interior, NAV unit, HID headlights, intake manifold, front fascia, grille, radiator, condensor, and trunk subwoofer. I sold off the shell and remaining parts to recoup some of my money.

The rear frame rails are now being welded. The stock rear frame rails angled to the rear corners of the car which limited rear wheel well size. To remedy this, the rear frame rails now travel straight back while paralleling the wheel wells, then they make they make the turn to the corners where they mount/attach in the same location on the rear bumper support.

Looking good ... The 2 in drop in the front frame rails , is that gonna effect the height of the engine in the car?Hence you think it might hit the hood or what is your plans..I thought about the same mod in mine but decided against it for that reason... Awesome build BTW

It will raise the intake into the hood but am planning to use a bubble scoop similar to the scoop found on the 2006-2010 Charger SRT8s. Also, I might be able to shorten the engine by going with a roots super charger.

The template is against the existing rail to show the contrast in shape

The roof skin is now off. For the most part I was happy with the condition of the structure

This was an area that surprised me: the top corner of the cowl on the driver's side was pretty nasty...I'll be ordering that from 521 Restorations in the near future

The AMD roof skin is just resting in place but seems to fit well.

Well, I finally rebuilt the thread after the photobucket extortion attempt. The Barracuda has been on the back burner while I've been working on a 68 Roadrunner restomod, but I have been buying parts. I picked up new AMD front fenders and a rust free pair of doors.
