Dads 1967 GTX

Dads 1967 GTX - 05/12/09 12:43 PM

A few of you may have seen my WIW message but I have decided to keep the old boy and put him on the road once again. This car actually belonged to my father who during a local drag blew the engine and parked it in 1980. It sat in the same spot for 29 years until recently. My father passed away in 2003 and he would always tell stories about the cars that he and my uncles use to build and run and before I became a Mopar Nut I really didn’t give it much thought. Recently my aunt decided to sell off the family land and gave me the opportunity to see if it was anything that we wanted in the old house. My uncle that was closest to my dad took me out to the car and said that I could have it if I wanted it so I called the roll back and picked it up. Its rough I know and will take many, many years to get him back on the road but the further I dug the more impressed I am with the car. It is a numbers matching 67 GTX with a factory 4speed, dana 60. No bells or whistles just a street fighter, I was able to find ¾ of the build sheet and it was a white car with black stripes. OH MY I have a long way to go! Please if you have any suggestions help me.. More to come.

Looks like a cool project. A good friend of mine has his dad's 67 Belvedere. It's a blue 318 3-speed on the colom. His dad was the origonal owner and the card in the engine compartment with his name on it is still there. The car sat in a barn for years until his mom sold the farm.

You really don't see that may of them. Glad to see your going to save it. Good luck!!!

There was a white with black stripes & interior 67 440 4 speed GTX here in Spokane years ago. It was a beautiful car, looked very serious in the B&W paint scheme and it was a very nice original car. I know the task may seem daunting but when it's done you'll love the combo!

If you are not familiar with how to restore a car I suggest reading books, asking lots of questions here on Moparts, and setting up a good spacious and organized work space before tearing into the car, it will save you allot of headaches and probably money down the road.

Good luck! Very cool car!

I picked up a 67 GTX 4-spd car a couple weeks ago. I have always wanted one and am glad I did. Having a 67 GTX 4-spd as your first Mopar (IMO) is a special thing, it is a rare car and you will not see or hear of many like it.

Use Moparts, that's what we are here for! Ask question and do it right the first time!

Good Luck!

Well here is a pic of my '67, hopefully you will stay motivated to finish that car. They do look very sweet in white!

This is going to be a cool project! My suggestion is to break the project down into a bunch of smaller steps and goals. That way you won't get overwhelmed.

I've owned my '67 Satellite for ten years, the last few years just working on it a little at a time when I have time and money.

This might sound nuts and it's probably the backwards way to do it, but I think your GTX would look bada$$ if you left the body and paint the way it is and got all the mechanical stuff up and running first and then drove it around looking like you just dragged it out of the field. I guarantee that would turn more heads than looking at yet another restored to stock musclecar. Patina like that looks so much cooler to me.

If you do restore it all the way, consider restoring it to the way your dad ran it back in the day with period-current mods.

I think you should invest in a rotisserie. This way you can get all around the car and send it to the bodyshop while its still on it. Then when it comes back you can put it all together easier too.

Don't get discouraged, you are doing the worst part right now. This is going to be a nice car, looks very solid to start.

anyone have any idea where to get quarter panels for these cars? I have a buddy who is rolling on his but cannot find anywhere to get any decent qtrs.

Re: Dads 1967 GTX - 06/09/09 12:38 AM

No quality panels are reproduced for 66/67 cars (just junk so far). You need to find a clean 66/67 Belvedere/Satellite donor car.

You should build the car the way you like. But you asked for an opinion on the video so I'll give one. I'm in agreement with the statements above. I like the color combo but don't care for wheels, interior treatment or the exhaust.

Check out this car for some inspiration.

Ultimately if you buy a car it is yours to do with it what you want... However, MY OPINION is not those words..

Re: Dads 1967 GTX - 07/16/09 06:56 PM

Lol thats why I asked guys! Its ok and I look for opinions as long as I dont get (that would look like poo) type comments i dont do well with flaming comments. As I am building this car from the ground up I want it to be something different but tasteful..

Everything about that YouTube video feels like it's a model, not a real car.

Fact remains, though, that there are lots of 66/67 Plymouth B-bodies out there for inspiration, and they are a car with very nice lines. I'm sure as the build progresses you will find the style that suits you and the car the best.

Goodluck with your project. You WILL get overwhelmed. But stick with it!

Re: Dads 1967 GTX - 07/17/09 06:04 PM

I'd go a different direction than what's in the video, just my . Those "huge hannah"
exhaust tips just dont do it justice. Those rims are a no-go as well.

Good luck with your project, I miss my '66 belvedere everytime I look at this page.

at the risk of lots of critisisim I will tell you about 5 yrs ago I found a listing for replacement 1/4's in J.C. whitney,I got them and my body guy didnt mind them at all. this is no hemi resto but a budget build and I personally think they are fine, they were maybe 12" tall x like 100"long or something like that, no idea if there still listed or not but thats my story.
