So It Begins, 1966 Dodge Charger Restification - 04/17/20 06:49 PM

Hi All,

I am one of the newest guys on the block here, just joined today. My code name is SportFuryS/23383 (real name is Eric), and I am from Connecticut. I am mostly on the ForBBodiesOnly and ForCBodiesOnly Mopar Forums, and just joined 66-67Charger.com about a week ago. I and my stepfather are mainly into the big land yacht C-body Mopars but we do have one b-body Mopar, a 1966 Dodge Charger. Here is an overview of the build.....

The Car- The car is a 1966 Dodge Charger with a 383 4bbl Hi-Po engine with a red interior, power windows, full length console, floor console clock, and air conditioning. The exterior color is WW1 White.

The History- The car was originally bought new out of Santa Monica, CA on Jan 7, 1966, and still has its original certi-card. It was sitting in the previous 2nd owners garage and had not run since 1987, I have newspaper pictures from in the trunk to prove it. My stepfather who is the 3rd owner bought the car on August 14, 2015.

The Plan- The plan is to keep the red interior, paint the car silver, put a modern A/C unit in, upgrade the front brakes to disc and keep the backs original but rebuilt drums, put on Magnum 500 wheels, and maybe a tti exhaust kit on it too. (Make a clone from the 1966 Charger brochures with a bit of a twist) My "personal" plan is to hopefully document the progress, and make an album of the car being done and sharing it on here when I have time.

Hope you join me "along for the ride" along this journey.

First Picture "Update"-

The old exhaust. We thought it was the original 1966 exhaust but it wasn't. The exhaust had the "dip" in it so it wouldn't hit the frame, but turns out it is an exhaust from Midas. The tailpipes were rotted out and no good. The original shocks were ok but we wanted new stuff. More photos to come.....

"Update" From 11/21/2019. Unfortunately No Photos:

No work done to the Charger lately since last update with needing brake parts and still having the gas tank worked on. However a gas tank gromment and 7 piece brake line with front right hump kit was ordered from InLine Tube today 11/21/2019. Stay tuned

Update From 12/8/2019. Unfortunately No Photos-

Gas tank back from being gone through/cleaned/rebuilt etc, and some brake work done also. Saw that on the right rear brake that I believe the return spring was missing. It was completely gone/non existent. Put on/shortened a '67 c-body (Fury) one. Otherwise not much else done sine then.

Re: So It Begins, 1966 Dodge Charger Restification - 04/17/20 10:52 PM

Update From February 8th, 2020. Unfortunately No Photos:

The gas tank came back from the shop cleaned out. My stepfather painted it silver and it is now back in the car. The gas tank I believe filler is being worked on as we speak as far as I know. I believe 2 rare rear bumper parts are painted as well.

And....

The rear drum brakes are now rebuilt with lines and everything, they are going to stay drums while the front is getting disc.

Soon Future Plans.... Convert front drum brakes to disc. Lastly in soon to be spring take the engine out, still not sure if we are going to use the engine that is in the car now or another rebuilt one.

Otherwise that is pretty much it for now. Stay tuned until next time. I will keep all updated....

Last photos, then onto photos of taking the engine out of the car. Whoever worked on or fixed the engine before we got it did it the half ass way, example there is supposed to be 4 or 5 bolts holding the transmission to the engine, there was only one. Trust me there was plenty more wrong when pulling out the motor, but I will not get into it. The last 2 box pictures are parts from the charger. Onto taking the engine out now!

It's Finally Time, Taking The Engine Out!. This was my favorite part. The engine was taken out of the car yesterday March 26th, 2020. First order of business, push the car out of the garage a little bit so we have more room to work. It's a small garage and it's where they used to store horses back in the day.

"New" Update From March 27th, 2020- Today March 27, 2020. Starting to sand the hood to prep it for primer then paint. Sanding with a sand wheel, and what we can't reach with that we will use a scotch brite "scrubby" pad. All in all, what we can't get with the sanding wheel will be done by hand. After some sanding, here is the result. There is still plenty more to do, this is just the start. A few more pictures to come.....

Update-

Hi everyone, the Dodge letters on the hood are now off and the hood now has 2 coats of primer on it. The car is now covered and ready for primer. The primer was put on March 28th, 2020. Need new letters as half the studs are broken off as you can see from the picture, but bagged them to save them for now. The primer that will be used is a Rust-oleum primer sealer spray can. See 3rd picture, more pictures to come......

Update From April 4th, 2020-

Engine parts were painted today and the old oil pan was also fixed and sanded. The first picture shows that the paint is actually 318 small block engine red paint. This is not the actual paint that will be used on the rest of the 383, just the "base coat" to prevent it from rusting. The gray part is already blasted and painted

We decided to pressure wash the engine heads. They were washed with a hot high pressured gun, but unfortunately not everything came off. Also that said you should of seen all the 30 plus year old nasty rust sludge that came out, pretty disgusting. After power washing here is what we have, notice some turquoise paint now showing. New Update-

Here are some transmission seal and transmission pictures. We took the stock torque converter out today April 24th 2020 to check the seals, and were going to replace the converter with a more snappy one to get off the line quicker. That plan unfortunately did not work out, so the stock converter is going back in. We did however learn that the transmission is a 1970 B & E body transmission, and has a 19 spline converter......

Good morning everyone. I just figured I would post up more pictures of the engine, this time of the top half getting painted. This was done Thursday April 23rd, 2020. Below are pictures of it before the top half was painted. Note the cylinder head that we put back on in the first picture so we could paint the sides of those as well. Notice in the 4th picture that the valve covers are back on, they are there to protect the top of the inside of the cylinder heads. They will not be used on the engine though, the plan is to save them just in case we need them and put new chrome Direct Connection ones on instead. A few more to come.....

Hi all,

Sorry I have not provided an update on the Charger in a little while, it has been coming along lately and a lot of work has been done. I first want to start with the interior, the drivers seat is now out of the car and sold thanks to someone on Moparts, as I am also a member there. It was taken out of the car on Monday April 27th, 2020 and sold Tuesday April 28th, 2020. I figured I would double check the seat back to see if there was a broadcast sheet in there just in case, I unscrewed the bottom seat back screws and popped it open........Unfortinatley nothing, down. I however do think I may have found something under the passenger seat though, but not sure if it is a broadcast sheet or not. More on that in a bit. Here are a few pictures of when the seat was out of the car and before the interior was vacuumed out. Pretty disgusting. The very last picture is the bottom of the seat after it was out, good thing they make new foam for these......

Update-

May 1st, 2020. Got the left head and header on, right side head gasket, and also got a present today. Turns out we had to make modifications to the header as it was hitting the steering box, mad. Luckily we modified it and it clears now, thank God cool . The present I am talking about is an AFCO Performance aluminum radiator.

Update-

May 2nd, 2020. Got the right side head and header on today. The header gave us some clearance issues as well, however that is also fixed thank God. What was wrong with that was it was hitting the I believe transmission or the pan. Now that the heads are on they are all torqued to 70 too.

Update-

Sunday May 3rd, 2020. The old transmission pan is off, and the transmission oil is getting drained. The oil looks great with no metal shavings or anything, all clear. The transmission was also rebuilt before we got the car too. The old pan will not be used, it will be saved in-case we need it for another project or we ever decide to sell the car. Going to be using a deeper aluminum pan with fins to cool the transmission down faster instead. More to come......

They actually don't fit that bad although we had to make 2 modifications. I'll tell ya one thing they fit better than TTI's that go on C-bodies

Re: So It Begins, 1966 Dodge Charger Restification - 05/11/20 12:11 AM

Hi everyone,

Not much updates on the Charger lately. Got a friends car project here and other projects here as well going on right now. Just got the vacuuming shown here, and the painting of the grille and headlight bezels for now. The vacuuming I personally did, it was done May 4th 2020 and took me about an hour and a half all said and done with doing both front and back sides of the car. Remember all that gross dried up seat foam that used to be in the 1st 3 pictures? All gone now, and amazingly we also found a piece of a check cleaning it out too. Yes I am serious and not kidding when I say a check. Notice the factory seat belts date coded 1965 also. Pictures of the right side of the car vacuumed out will hopefully come tomorrow, stayed tuned......

Hi everyone,

Here are the pictures of the car vacuumed out I did not get to post yesterday, of the right passenger side. It was done May 4th 2020 like the left drivers side. Notice the factory back seat belt date coded 1965, however I could not get a picture of the front seat belt with the seat there and I believe it was stuck as well. Here are pictures of the passenger side before it was vacuumed out.....

Here are the pictures of the paper under the seat under the springs. I honestly thought it was the broadcast sheet but folded up, I am pretty sure I got my hopes up on it for nothin'. Oh well, all I can do is take the seat out of the car and gently pull the paper out. Any other thoughts on this though, it has to be something from the factory if it is stuck under the springs right? These are all the pictures I have for right now, stay tuned until later......

Hi everyone,

Sorry I have not given an update on the Charger lately, but not much of an update on it. We have a friends car project over our house, not to mention another one of our PITA car projects we are working on as well so it has been put on hold for a couple weeks. So far we painted the alternator bracket, grill and headlight covers, the A/C condenser, taken out the original A/C ranker valve to have it rebuilt, and putting the "new" transmission pan on have been done. The alternator bracket was painted Tuesday May 5th, 2020. Sorry I did not post this earlier.

Hi everyone,

I have a little update on the Charger build. We got some 8mm Accel Super Stock spiral wires (part number 5045K) from Fast Guppy Speed Shop for the car, we also got an Edlebrock Performer 383 intake from a fellow member on the FCBO Mopar forum, got the transmission pan on, and took out the original A/C ranker valve to have it rebuilt. I will start in order, we got the wires on May 14th, 2020 but did not put them in yet. The wires on the hood of the car under the cover in the last picture are spares or extras

Hi All,

I have a little update on the Charger for everybody, not much of one but here it is. We ordered a carburetor spacer from Jegs and we put it on the car, along with the carburetor we had sitting around that will be used. The carburetor was gone through so it does properly work, it is a 600 cfm Edelbrock so it will work for a stock 383. We put them on June 6th 2020.

Hi All,

I got another little update on the Charger, well kind of a big one. June 10th 2020 we mocked up and bolted in the new AFCO aluminum radiator, put the drive fan on, a new Accel Super Stock coil in, put the horns back on, put the carburetor linkage on, and even started putting the front headlight assembly and grill in. I will start the update with mocking up the new radiator. We mocked it up where we thought was appropriate and it did not work, we closed the hood to test the fitment and it fit very nicely BUT it was JUST touching the top of the cap but that was fixed......

I got another update on the Charger. A new Halogen high beam headlight was put in, and we did not have anymore after that so another was ordered from RockAuto. The new headlight limit switches we got from a member from FBBO and 66-67charger.com were hooked up as well, we also put on the left side headlight bezel, we put on a Mr. Gasket air breather cap on the left side valve cover, and also got some wiring started as well. Hi All,

A little bit has done to the car lately, and still working on the wiring. We got the new high beam from Rockauto, although it is not in yet. We also got the lights working and rotating, and got a new battery for the car as well. It is a Mopar battery too. Otherwise that is mainly all that got done so far.....

Re: So It Begins, 1966 Dodge Charger Restification - 07/01/20 01:25 AM

Hi All,

I got a little more "background information" so to speak on our Charger. I was poking around on www.1966-67ChargerRegistry.com recently looking for another Charger I saw at a show in Michigan last year, and I just so happened to find our car on there. I did not even submit it but was thinking about it. Anyway.......

According to the registry our Charger was built around 8.9% of the way through the production run, it is the 3,353rd Charger out of the 37,344 that were built, it was 1 of 2 1966 Chargers registered in San Jose California and was 1 of 24 registered in California. It also believe it or not did not come with a roof stripe. That is mainly all I got, I just figured I would share this information with you all because I love to find it out and know this type of stuff......

Hi All,

here is my latest update on the Charger build. It is coming along rather nicely, been working on it quite a bit. We do still have a little bit of wiring to finish up I think but we got the other right side high beam light in, the right side headlight lens in, both of the front turn signal/parking lights in and working now as well, the front air shield (if that is what you call it I think) on the bottom of the core support painted and on the car, the front sway bar together, and the Classic Auto Air a/c kit even came. I will start with the lights, the left side parking light was put in on June 19th 2020 and the right side a few days after on June 22nd 2020.
