Jensen Interceptor.... :p

Jensen Interceptor.... :p - 02/14/09 09:22 PM

Haha!

Here's a thread on my Jensen, I bought it last year and have gotten it running. Drove it around the block too... it's been sitting since 1991, when the engine, transmission and radiator were redone. The owner never touched the car for 17 years....

The way I got it.....

Re: Jensen Interceptor.... :p - 02/14/09 09:27 PM

So far I've swapped out the stereo and switches on the interior and got some various stuff fixed.... changed the steering wheel too. The horn button here was INSIDE the factory steering wheel, perfect fit on the new wheel!

Re: Jensen Interceptor.... :p - 02/14/09 09:29 PM

The engine was rebuilt already with new pistons etc... so I thought I would try storing the stock intake and running something a little weird under the hood, two Edelbrock 500s.
The intake is almost finished... just needs the polishing done...

Re: Jensen Interceptor.... :p - 02/14/09 09:33 PM

I figure I'm gonna try to see if the speedometer can be wrapped...... so I went through the front end. I'm lowering the front about 1 1/2" to 2", new everything, ball joints, bushings, brakes, braided lines, any upgrade I can...

It's in the middle of transformation right now....

Don't know if they are still avalible, but check out Mom's from the early 80's with the ft spoiler. It really made the car look different, I thought it blended the ft into the sides of the car. Wish I had another pic, but this is really a pic of my Demon the day after I bought it.

No!!!!!!! It's giving me tons of MOTOVATION!
I was sooo burned out with home renos I was fried. Now I'm getting back into it, the Jensen will be done in a month or two I'm hoping, in time for good weather so I can move my pig out and start wrenching!

Sometimes my motovation needs a jumpstart!

Re: Jensen Interceptor.... :p - 02/20/09 03:22 PM

Glad to hear it!
I was in the same boat, which is why I got the 47. The money spent still would not have made the 40 road worthy, so I decided that I wanted something that would run.

I gotta question the home renovations though. Burned out and still only a one car garage?

Re: Jensen Interceptor.... :p - 02/21/09 03:03 AM

I'm not sure my garage is BIG ENOUGH to qualify as a one car garage!

Do you know the hammer trick for those calipers?
A vette friend showed me how he would SLOWLY bleed them, to avoid bubbles, then let it sit for an hour or so. Then go back and lightly tap the calipers all over, which jarred the remaining bubbles loose. One more careful bleed and he had great pedal.

I have a spare hood beside my house, but let's keep that quiet for now... LOL

I have a few go fast goodies in store, just waiting on a few of them while I get under the hood ready.
I want to be running in a month so I can get my jalopy out and get crackin on it. The Jensen is just gonna be a decent driver until my Coupe is finished, then I'll get my wife mad.
I mean go silly on the Jensen...

I just heard my parts will be here Friday at the earliest... I got bored waiting... my fans were filthy, as was their motors and the shroud, and my air flaps were torn / missing...

It's now a 9.35 to 1 compression 446 cubic inch engine with ported heads with the valve bowls deshrouded, a Comp Cam 270H, and a few parts and pieces not usually found under an English bonnet...

This is what I had at 12:00 noon today...

I'm taking it to my buddy's shop to do the exhaust, he has a couple of hoists, and I sure don't!

Re: Jensen Interceptor.... :p - 01/27/10 03:16 AM

I figured I better update!
My second muffler came in around Christmas. Unbelievable.

Anywho'''sse....

It is now running with Delta Motorsport headers, mandrel bent 2 1/2" exhaust out the rear, two Walker 6" diameter 20" long turbo mufflers, and two Dynomax Bullets acting as resonators in the tips.
I'm not in love with the LOOKS of the tips, but in person the car sounds better than I hoped for!

Here is a video- the carbs are out of the box untouched, I still need to swap out the stock ignition- I bought an FBO setup, and I need to tune the car, but it runs OK so far.....

It actually sounds much better with the FBO ignition installed. I've never used an FBO setup, but I'm actually truly impressed by something I bought for once!

Re: Jensen Interceptor.... :p - 06/12/10 08:30 PM

Well after a few months of house renos, I started putting away tools, which lead to opening up the garage, which lead to pushing my Coupe out which in turn required the Jensen being moved....
SoooOooo....
I just HAD to start working on the Jensen a wee bit... LOL
Got my front end nicely settled at ride height, so I have tightened up all my suspension and threw in some cotter pins. I noticed my toe-in was out by quite a bit, so I did an eyeball alignment which I hope is good enough to get me to the alignment shop.
Made pieces to fasten both the chokes open and installed them... and I changed my turn signal stalk to a proper Interceptor turn signal stalk. I have to get the wiring ends on but I tested it and it indeed works like I should!
I have to get my windows working (I removed my AC and will retrofit later) and then I think I am on the road!!!!!!
I have two new K&D switches, and access to quite a few window motors.... so I just have a bit of work to do on the windows, finish my stereo install, and then I am on the road for the summer!
I'll post pics of my breakdowns, videos of me pushing the car home, and the amount of tears I shed in future posts....

I have no idea what temp I am running, I will have to try a mechanical gauge. my fans don't come on until the factory gauge gets into the red zone, and it feels (hand on the upper hose) OK, but I don't trust feel! haha
Kickdown is hooked up, might need a little tweak, but it's pretty good. Trans shifts good, now I have third gear at a decent speed, much better!
Steering is good, handling not bad, brakes seem OK, all in all it seems pretty drivable.

My issues are the heat- I will have to find out what I'm running at- and my fuel level gauge doesn't seem to work. I still have to get my driver's window functioning properly too. It goes down OK but needs assistance going up...
I have a new K&D sender for my water temp, I'm wondering if it's the culprit for my temp readings, maybe it reads too high?? Maybe the voltage stabilizer is off somehow? I'm not sure.
I'll have to find out what is up with my fuel level gauge- sender, gauge or wiring...
I think I'll remove my PW motor and see if the window goes up and down effortlessly in it's tracks.... I'm guessing it's binding.

I now seem to have weight transfer, maybe too much weight transfer ...? lol it squats dramatically in the rear and the front raises, it still spins but not as much and not as far. It will do a roll-on but only for a few feet usually if it's decent traction available.

I think I will have new rear leafs made. They run about $500 and I can always remove them if they don't help... or make things worse...

Still sorting out the bugs on the car, and finishing my house renos, and and and.... LOL

Body/paint will be next year at the earliest. I have a "rat rod" -ish Jensen until then! *tears*

I am interested in how you resolve your rear suspension/weight transfer issues-- so please keep us posted on your progress. I have a 1971 Mark II Interceptor which is currently being fitted with a 499 CID stroker (built by Diamondback Engines in Texas based on a 400 block), so I anticipate having some suspension work ahead of me to handle the additional power and torque.

You've done a great job with your Jensen so far-- properly upgraded cars are so few and far between, especially in North America.

Hi Dave!

I know many on the JOC forum believe in the addition of coil over springs to help the rear squat and raise the rear a little....
I am most likely going to change my rear springs FIRST, as just a quick visual inspection leaves me thinking they need replacing for sure- and once I do that I'll try and get the most out of my car as far as launching goes....

Are you using the Delta Motorsports headers?

I wound up fitting 2 1/2" exhaust right through on my car, I was warned it wouldn't fit but we got it in and it works pretty good.

I'm just driving my Jensen every chance I get and loving every minute of it for the last month or two......

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, I am using the Delta shorty headers and will need a larger exhaust with crossover section to suit it. Would you by chance have photos of your 2.5" exhaust as installed?

I'm also planning to start with new rear leaf springs and take it from there. Is there a North American source for Jensen-specific springs (other than K&D) or are you having yours custom-made locally?

Regards, Dave

Killer looking mill!

I'm getting springs made locally I'm pretty sure. My buddy has a spring business and he's been begging me not to ask him.
I do have pics of the exhaust somewhere, or my brother does. It wasn't easy- I had to buy mufflers with the same outside dimension as the originals, and then I had to modify the mufflers- I cut the inlet and outlet off each muffler and I now have an S curve (so to speak) coming off each inlet and each outlet of each muffler.
I saw pics of a few Jensens that tried 2 1/2" exhaust, the rear would hit the pipe as it exited the mufflers. Took a couple hours and 4 U bends, a bit of cutting... a bit of welding, but it was doable. I toyed with the idea of an X pipe but I couldn't see it happening as far as clearance and space went.
If you were local I think I have an H pipe that bolts up to the Delta Motorsports headers.... in my shed or garage... I'm not using it.

This is what we did to them- the only way we could get them to fit in the car.......

I went mandrel bends and very thick collector rings...

Re: Jensen Interceptor.... :p - 08/10/10 10:34 PM

I went with two mufflers at the rear, I think it sounds good but the tips are 4" at the rear- the diameter of the muffler.... I'm thinking of trying a different tip/muffler combo down the road so it looks more like a factory exhaust tip, I love the way these sound but it's a BIG diameter tip....

I have to get over to see you and bring the motor plate with me. That rivet gun you have, where did you get it and how hard is it to squeeze off 3/16 rivets?

I was just thinking of you.....
I went to a gas station, my buddy comes out and tells me the clerk HASSSS to see me. So I go inside....

The clerk tells me how he has owned a few Jensen Interceptors, and that he knows where you can STILL buy aluminum front fenders for the car. In fact..... (he tells me) the WHOLE CAR is aluminum!!!!!

I had to laugh, as my aluminum Jensen has rust!

Why did I think of you...?!?!
Because aluminum is an inferior material, much like fiberglass, when compared to steel.
Of course.

Thanks for the exhaust images-- nice looking work. When I bought the car, it had a new set of those same mufflers and hangers in the boot-- so maybe the shop can use them after all.

The engine with all of its ancillaries finally made it in yesterday-- so the exhaust is next.

Mine are Walker 2 1/2" inlet and outlet. My car came with mufflers that looked identical, but they were 1 3/4" inlet and outlet.....

How long until you fire?!?!
What's your engine specs as far as compression and cam? Have you driven your car much before the engine swap?
