Re: 72 340 4-speed Survivor 45,000 miles - 02/17/09 12:39 AM

There were a few 340 twisters sent to Canada in 72 and the performance hood treatment (V21) was available in 72 also. The original owner of this car tells me that the "ladder stripe" was rolled up and in the glove compartment when it came in! The selling dealer,Swartzwalds in Alexandria Mn. was supposed to apply the decal during prep but when the owner came to pick up the car, flustered over it, he told them he would do it himself. This car was special ordered which did not include power front disks. It showed up that way and the owner was not charged for it! Oh and since it was destined for Mn. it also showed up with a block heater! I didn't know this until a month after I purchased the car. A testament to how this car was cared for is evident in that it spent most of its life in snowy, salty Mn. Just inside for the most part! Dave

More would be great, thank you! Nice clear ones in natural light, (flash over exposes some detail) both sides, front and rear, maybe from a few inches further away to cpture more of the engine in the pics.

In the one shot of the rear of the alternator there weems to be some blue paint on the wire harness, was the engine touched up with blue paint at some point?

Dave, I was referring to the Chrysler at Carlisle show:

http://store.carlisleevents.com/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=CE&Category_Code=CANU

They always have unrestored survivors on display in a tent. I have seen a lot of nice muscle cars on display but I don't recall ever seeing a 340 4 spd Duster there.

Re: 72 340 4-speed Survivor 45,000 miles - 03/12/09 03:37 AM

awesome car!!!

there is a 72 H code/auto FY1 twister here locally. its a 2 owner car and the 2nd owner bought it when it was about 6 months old. i did decode the tag for him a long time ago and it was a super low production number at about 100040 or so if i remember rightly.
its in a bodyshop here, i think the bodyguys said 2 weeks, that was about 4 or 5 years ago. heated storage i suppose.

From what I know the few that were produced were never sold here....a sheep in wolves clothing if you will.........Mine will be under the "Survivor" tent at The all Chrysler Nationals in Carlisle Pa. For 72,71 the 340 decal did not touch the stripe above it.....I believe 70 did however.....and the 340 decal did in fact go below the body line that you mention...for reference look at any vendors stripe/decal, Year one would be a good reference....

Dave, you made arrangements to have it in the survivor tent at Carlisle? You usually have to send in pics etc ahead of time to be accepted. The cars that are excepted are all listed in the Chryslers at Carlisle literature with a brief descriptions of each car. Quite an honor to have a car be put in that tent because each applicant is reviewed and only true survivors are excepted. Its always a great display every year. And like I said before I don't ever recall seeing a 340 4 spd Duster in the survivor tent.

Re: 72 340 4-speed Survivor 45,000 miles - 03/14/09 06:55 PM

Dave, congrats on getting excepted!! Its really cool because your car will be featured in the literature with a picture and description for all to see! That will be something you'll want to hold on to. If you have never seen the survivor tent before you will be amazed at the cars on display. Bill

Re: 72 340 4-speed Survivor 45,000 miles - 03/19/09 09:28 PM

Yes, I have the original black steelies w/poverty caps on right now. I had a friend restore the wheels so I installed the rally's I had purchased late last year for the time being. Regrettably (now) I sold the rally's on FABO about 3 weeks ago Probably should have kept them, they were original SBP 5.5. Now I'm thinking of buying another set new if I can't find'em good used. The things I do sometime! But anyway, yeah I know black is original but I just can't bring myself to mount those new poly's on the original rims Ive been trying to pull the car out and snap some pics but its rained almost everyday except for today and now its starting to rain again! I think Sunday should be a good day for that though. Any comments on the "new" centers yet? Dave

Got to meet the original owner of the Duster yesterday morning. He was in the area and came by for a few pics with the car. It was fantastic to hear stories about the car, how things got mixed up when it was ordered and watching Les's facial expressions as he looked her over. He was able to tell me how every little nick in the paint happened! Amazing! How often does this happen 37 years later? Dave

I think the thing that is killing the black steel rims right now are the bfg's. I love the looks of it with the black steel rims on it, and I'd leave them on it. The wheels will look totally different with the polyglass tires on them and will make it look really correct.

Thanks! It was a nice ride over that morning...I had'nt seen or talked to Ed Miller in over 20 years! He helped me with a lot of original parts for a 70 Vitamin C Roadrunner I restored back in 88-89. I sold it in 96 (gave away). Got back into the hobby last November with the purchase of this unbelievable 340 Duster. Are you going to Carlisle? Dave

Great looking car.

Strange that it appears on both the Broadcast and fender tag, it's coded for black vinyl side mouldings and not for the stripe.

Re: 72 340 4-speed Survivor 45,000 miles - 07/01/09 02:22 AM

Sharp eye there Rob....the second owner removed the side molding trim in 2000 in favor of the 340 stripe which in my opinion looks 100% improved. I have the moldings the original owner ordered when new. Dave

Of all the survivor cars that I have seen, I could count the number of 340 Dusters on my hand.
They are just that hard to come by.

This is just an amazing machine. It needs nothing and I'm glad that you actually drive it

I have a 1971 Duster Twister in the GA4 Winchester Grey/Black stripes. Just a 318 car with the 3 speed.
It's the only Twister I have ever seen in that color combo. No options either except for the am radio, twister package, and drip rail moldings.
Yes it's manual steering to. As we say in the south, "aint nothing like manual steering"

Re: 72 340 4-speed Survivor 45,000 miles - 12/02/09 03:33 AM

Thanks! DusterKrazy I agree, you have a better chance of stumbling across a Hemi car then to stumble upon an original low mileage 340 4-speed Duster....They were dirt cheap! And people beat the crap out of em! If you could see the original REAR tires from this car you could get an idea of how this car was treated.....Dave

Re: 72 340 4-speed Survivor 45,000 miles - 12/05/09 04:09 PM

This Duster is in amazing original condition with the factory applied Lemon Twist (FY1) paint, upgraded black interior & original 340 engine & A833 Heavy Duty 4- speed transmission. The car has 46,000 documented miles and I have two of the original E-70 14 polyglas tires. The drive train is untouched and has never been out of the car. This car was special ordered by the original owner,(of whom I am in contact with) from Swartzwalds Chrysler Plymouth in Alexandria Mn. The options he chose were, 340 h.p. package,HD cast iron A833 transmission(Chrysler went to aluminum in 73)with a Hurst shifter, interior upgrade package, tinted windows, power front disk brakes, undercoat w/hood insulation pad(still there) rear mounted speaker with fader control and the high impact, extra cost option paint, Lemon Twist Yellow. Instead of the 340 graphics package he decided to go with the beltline molding to protect his baby from door dings and such. The second owner,a dentist located in Rockford Ill and the person I purchased the car from, had the 340 stripes and callouts applied & the moldings professionally removed in 1999. I have the original 6 side moldings and they are in like new condition. The car was sold in 1999 to the dentist with 36,000 miles on the odometer as shown on a copy of his title. He had put approx 9,000 miles on the car before my purchase Nov 2008. This car was featured in the Muscle car Profile section (pg50)in the October issue of Hemmings Motor News. It was photographed July 9th of this year by Geoff Stunkard of Muscle Car Review magazine for an upcoming issue. To find one of these vehicles today in this condition is almost impossible.

It looks like someone took off the idle solenoid. Does this use the 71 style solenoid or the one that goes on the carb itself on the front passenger side?
Posted By: dmoore

Re: 72 340 4-speed Survivor 45,000 miles - 03/03/10 01:21 AM

Steve I had removed the idle stop solenoid in the picture you are referring to in order to free up the brass plunger which always stuck even when these cars were new....It now functions as new. As you can see in 72 they were mounted to the intake via one bolt & a dowel. I believe 71 & 73 were of a slightly different configuration. Dave

Hi Dave,

Is it possible for you to post a close-up picture of the drivers side valve cover high stand off wire loom? I noticed that there is a hole in the center of the wire loom stem, and that you have a plastic piece inserted in it, but I can't quite make it out. I want to know what that piece is, and what purpose it serves. It looks like it is holding a wire maybe? Any assistance would be appreciated.
Posted By: dmoore

Re: 72 340 4-speed Survivor 45,000 miles - 04/29/10 01:43 AM

Email sent but I will post here as well...the hole in the wire loom you are asking about is for anchoring of the idle stop solenoid wire(blue). A white plastic push-in type fastener is taped to the wire and just pushed into the hole thus securing it. 1972 was the year Chrysler Plymouth started using the idle stop solenoid to help prevent run-on or dieseling of the engine after it was shut off during hot weather. I remember the plunger would always stick and have to be sprayed with a little WD-40 or a few drops of light oil. Do you have one on your car? I will post a close up pic tomorrow.........Dave
