Re: Diesel Dart Cummins - 12/28/14 02:56 AM

Thanks for the support. It'll have a 12mm p-pump 66mm Borg Warner turbo 5x18 injectors and nitrous. The motor is out of a RV it's a 94. The trans is out of a 2wd 2500. It's 4 link from jegs out back. With a 8 3/4 and 2.73 gears full tubs s&w cage. It's been long in the making picked up the car with slant 6 in it for 900bucks. The car will be ready for the race season to race my girl and her 34 chevy cummins Ratrod.

Re: Diesel Dart Cummins - 12/28/14 06:57 PM

I want to keep the build as mopar/dodge as possible. I had a dana70 out of a 3500 but too big and spools are not available other then one I found. The 8 3/4 was super cheap compared to dana60 and with the spool big axles shortened length of shafts the axle should handle plenty for now....thanks for looking out for me and the build.

Re: Diesel Dart Cummins - 12/31/14 11:08 PM

That 47 will never live. You can build it with the 48 5 -gear planetary's, but the weak link will always be the overdrive clutch/spring. You can update to a 48 overdrive, but by then, you could just use a 48...and the 48 won't live either with that torque. You've got options, but none are cheap.
Posted By: DieselDart73

Re: Diesel Dart Cummins - 01/01/15 12:08 AM

I don't think I'll ever need the overdrive the gearing and tire size will keep me out of it... But any pointers or tricks to making it live longer will be appreciated. Can I keep the 47 out of OD with a manual Valve body? Thanks

Unfortunately no. The OD units clutch is used in direct and OD. You'll still pull through the clutch with OD off.

If OD is not needed, you can just build a 727, or dare say I, a Turbo 400. The adapter on the back of the engine is available in Chevy, Ford, and Mopar. I'd say a Powerglide is out because your going to need 3 gears in the quarter with the rpm band of the engine. If your going to have one built, pick something that has gear ratios available for it. You can tailor the gear split to keep the diesel in it's narrow power band. Probably be best to check in with the Cummins truck drag race guys. They will be a lot more helpful on recommending a transmission and know what will live. I only know what won't!!

BTW, I think your going to want a lot more rear gear.

Thanks for the info. We already have my girls truck with a powerglide adapted cummins. Fully built 2.70 gears 33x18.50s runs 10.87@123mph footbrake picks frontend off ground.

Re: Diesel Dart Cummins - 01/01/15 02:16 AM

And the other truck the guy who built this one runs a 727 in it goes 11.2s all day and hasn't broke anything other then universal and pinion on the 9in. This is the first dodge trans I'm doing. I love my Mopars we have a lot in my family. Seven to be exact. I've always done the ford trans in my tow rigs most Suncoast part and precision.

Re: Diesel Dart Cummins - 01/03/15 06:23 AM

Those rh's can live. Decent clutch packs and bands. Some had an aluminum front planet. You will need a steel front planet. I would rollerize the gear train. Billet input and intermediate shafts with the second gear updates. A light car Like that shouldn't be too hard on it. Wouldn't hurt to do a direct drum. We do these all the time. Can't hardly keep them in the shelves. One customer keeps us busy with his. 1600 hp on fuel only in a regular cab 4wd. It's a race truck but the convertor has become the weak point. Sweet build though!

Re: Diesel Dart Cummins - 01/03/15 09:08 PM

Cool project! I think you're gonna need some fatter torsion bars....lol.
Posted By: DieselDart73

Re: Diesel Dart Cummins - 01/03/15 09:27 PM

Believe it or not those are the slant6 torsion bars. Lol being that the engine is moved back as far as it is it's really stiff up front. It's really amazing. Well test it and see where to go from there.
Posted By: JDMopar

Re: Diesel Dart Cummins - 01/03/15 09:44 PM

You can buy bigger bars if needed. I would gusset the torsion bar frame stubs that are left, if you aren't going to tie the torsion bar cross member back together. With the motor scooted back, you may not have room to tie it back together. As long as the remaining sections of the torsion bar x member won't twist, they will be fine. It'd be hell to come down from a hard wheels up launch....and the drivers side torsion bar jab you in the back of your left leg!
