Billy B. Bad's Fish Story - 11/28/08 06:32 PM

Everyone has told or knows some who has told there fish story and in the end it got away.
Well....This is a fish story and........It didn't get away.

This is what the car looked like when I bought in the summer of 97. I drove the car some after putting new tires, exhaust and electronic ignition on it.
In 1995 I started looking for another old Mopar, I had been out of the game for a while and wanted to get back into it. At the time I was working in a tire shop and had just gotten engaged.
A man that I knew came in to the shop and I just happen to ask him if he had anything that he wanted to sell. He told me he had a 68 Barracuda and a few Dusters but not much else.
I wasn't sure I wanted a Barracuda at the time so I passed on the offer.
2 years later he came back in and I again asked if he had anything for sale. He said I still have the Cuda and if you want it I'll sell it cheap.
Well, hearing the word cheap made me go look at the car.
I got to his house and didn't see anything sitting out. He took me over to a barn, Inside sat the Barracuda with about an inch of dust on it. I looked the car over and it seemed solid and wasn't wrecked. We put in a battery, new points and some fresh gas and it fired right up.
He said I could have it for 1500.00 bucks today only.
I drove back to the bank, Got the cash and bought it. Hell I drove the darn thing home (as you can see in the pic).

I drove the car from time to time after putting new tires, exhaust and electronic ignition on it. Even raced it a few times too, Car ran pretty good (13.21 @ 101mph).

During the next few years I acquired a 72 Challenger for 35.00, Yes you read right and its not a type-O.
It was a rolling chassis and had a BB K-frame in it (original SB car). The plan was to make the Cuda a driver and the Challenger an all out drag car.

Well times changed and I went through a rough period in life.
My wife asked for a divorce and told me she will be asking for the cars in the divorce. knowing that bit of information was critical. I sold both cars to a friend of mine so she wouldn't get her grubby little hands on them.
Both cars were titled to me and only the Cuda was bought prior to the marriage. When we went before the judge I was asked about the cars. I told the judge they were sold to help pay bills that otherwise would have been delinquent.
I presented a bill of sale and the bills I paid with the money.
She and her lawyer bitched but the judge sided with me saying "He did what he had to do to make ends meet".
The divorce was final and once the papers were in hand I went out and bought the Cuda back.
It sat in the garage for about a year and then I moved to my new house and shop. I moved the Cuda in to its new home knowing that within a couple of years it would be road worthy again.

Re: Billy B. Bad's Fish Story - 11/28/08 06:34 PM

I looked for several months for body shops, I talked to a few and even visited a few places, I talked to 5 places in all.
One was 2 hours away and I didn't like that idea cause I want to take pictures as it goes. 2nd shop talked a good game and did great work, but would never come and look at the car to give a quote as he told me he would. 3rd guy was a kid just starting out. He does good work but not what I wanting and I was a little nervous about him doing it. The 4th guy I talked to came out but told me his boss would have to come out and give a bid. I waited and nothing ever happened. A few weeks later I happen to be at a body shop that did work on my 2005 HEMI Ram. I asked the owner if he was busy (making small talk) and he told me "No, Slow as hell right now".
So I asked if he wanted some fill in work and do a resto on my old car. He told me he would be out in 2-3 days to look it over. Well within 3 days he was in fact out to look at it and we struck a deal.

Later that month I took the motor and Trans out of the car and loaded it up and took it to his shop.
In January of 2008 they started on the car. I knew the car was going to be fill work so I was OK with that. I stopped in a few weeks ago to take some pics of the dash so I could check out some after market stuff.

The car was now under construction!

Most of the parts needed for this resto will come from LAYSONS RESTORATIONS

Good story, I'm glad you got to keep the car, and it looks like a pretty clean project.

The one thing that caught my eye was 13.21 @ 101...WOW! What motor did it have in it?

When I got the car it had a 360 in it with "J" heads.
We added headers, intake, Holly 4bbl and a Purple Shaft cam. That was the best time I ever got with the car at Gateway International (I dont remember the year).
If I ever get all my stuff unpacked from the move I think I have pictures of the car as it sat in the barn when I got there to buy it.

I just ordered a bunch of parts from B/E&A yesterday (11/28/08). As soon as they come in I will post some pics of the new parts.

Well this is a long drawn out process but it does give me time to hunt down parts and anything else that might pop up.

They sand blasted the front of the car and shot it in black primer.
As of today this is what the car looks like.

Billy are they NOS? Or old redone parts that a plater did for you?
Also you show the silver and charcoal is that the 2 colors you are doing the car in?
I also had one more question when I see the fenders and other body panels what did they use does not look like a DA with #80
Did they take a grinder and go over the whole surface?

What peieces are you asking about?

Re: Billy B. Bad's Fish Story - 07/11/09 02:58 AM

Im going to assume your asking about the bumpers, hood inserts and such.

Bumpers are original as well as the hood inserts and side emblems, I had a local shop here redo & straighten them plus re-chrome them. They will be doing my other bright work in the next few weeks also. My headlight surrounds, upper/lower deck lid tin, side spear and gills are all Original also.

The tail light bezels, dash bezel, glove box pieces, mirror, door handles, gas cap, etc are all from B/E&A (Mike, AKA HEMICUDA).

It wont be long and I will have an order into DANTE (Sp?) as well as some other MOPARTS members.

The goal for the car is to have a magazine material type car as well as show and once a year drag car.
We have a motor picked out for the car and if what I have in my minds eye turns out to be what I want it should be the

Re: Billy B. Bad's Fish Story - 07/24/09 02:21 AM

Block sanding has started on the car.
From what they tell me it will go through 3 stages of this and then to paint.
Posted By: Billy B Bad

Re: Billy B. Bad's Fish Story - 07/28/09 12:02 AM

Front fenders being massaged.
If you looked at the previous pics then you will see the vast difference in the fenders

Like I said before, block sanding has started on the car and this will be done several times with the last one being a wet sand.

From there they tell me its time for paint.

So until they start spraying silver paint, powder coating suspension parts I wont have any updates.

Just hope I have it home by fall so I have a car to work on over the winter.

Second coat of primer is on and more sanding being done. Body man didn't like some of the edges around the fenders & quarters so he was working those when I got there.
Interior side of the doors have been shot to work out any problems, Fender wells are in primer too. It's starting to get close, real close.
Painter is trying to talk me into painting it Chrysler 300 White, I told him no way in hell. You want off easy cause white hides flaws, Paint it silver like I want, your just damn lucky I changed my mind from black (We both got a good laugh out of it).

Undercoating goes on this week too

I have seen a few cars with and without them.
They aren't 100% necessary but I wanted them on there. The 69 Barracuda down the road from me doesn't have them either. He told me he cut his off along time ago and wishes now he hadn't due to some minor flexing his paint is starting to crack.

Oz sent me a color sample from down under called "Silver Fox", it's a australian ford color.
Well we had one heck of a time matching it, I think i did pretty good when I sat down with all the color cards in the sun for 3 hours
it is a Ford silver that to me is a dead on match to the Aussie color.

Oz asked me a while back what motor I was putting in the car and I told him I was leaning towards a HEMI. His reply was "Thats a heck of a way to lean"

Well here is a pic of the motor that is going in. It is a mixture of New school with a touch of old school.

By the time im done it should be right around 600hp, we are also adding a AlterKtion k-frame and front suspension.

Anyway, just an update as to the motor

Don't sell that car unless you absolutely are forced to. Slap a car cover on it and let it sit. As long as its inside don't worry about how long it sits. If its years who cares. When life allows later you can get back to it. All the hard work is done. Don't let go of the dream now. You have to keep the vision of what it would be like having it all done crusing down the road. That vision can become reality later on.

I have had my 1968 Dodge Dart project for 1 year and still haven't started it. I am currently planning and know about 90% of what I want to do with it. The only problem is that I barely have anything (from tools, parts, money, or skills). But I am going to keep it and work on it till it is finished. If it takes 6 years, so be it. But it will be my own because I built it and it is something I designed and created. One of a kind. You already have a great history with this car. Don't let it go.

Re: Billy B. Bad's Fish Story - 02/08/11 04:27 PM

Mechanic from work wrote me a check for the car and came to pick it up last night.

I ended up handing him the check back.

He just smiled and said "Good, now just chill out and finish it as you can and if you need help with something let me know. Dont let it get you down, the hard part is done, you may not think so but it is".

This is coming from a Mopar guy who has done 2 Roadrunners from the ground up and is now working on a 68 GTX thats sitting on a rotisserie. Guess he should know.

It just seems like I have so much to do yet that my head almost exploded.
Fuel line, brake lines, suspension, interior, all the wiring, figuring out what $%#&@%& screw goes where from the all the boxes

I guess what I will do is just work on it as I have time and cash and when its done its done.

Exactly!

I'm glad you kept it. Don't look at it as one big pile of parts. Just focus on one subassembly at a time. It doesn't seem like such a big job if you think of it that way.

Re: Billy B. Bad's Fish Story - 02/09/11 02:06 AM

I'm real happy for you that you kept it. Getting nice body and paint work is by far the worst part of getting a project done. It's a ton of frustrating work if you do it yourself and can be a big disappointment if you pay someone else to do it. Everything else you do on the car will be fun and super easy to keep motivated.

What he said. Don't think about the whole project. Just focus on one thing, get that one thing done, then focus on another small achievable goal. Take some time off too. One can get burned out bad restoring a car. Given the history you have with this car coupled with the fact the worst is over you gotta keep it. Walk away for a while and come back.

If you are patient the dream will come true. Turning the key, hearing it fire up, cruising down the road on a warm summer day listening to the rumble of the engine. Getting out and saying wow, look at that car, watching the heads turn as you drive by, having folks come up to you at the gas stations. Its all worth it. I have been through a lot of tough projects and you gotta just keep on visioning what it will be like when its done.

The car is going to be beautiful and I'm glad you ended up keeping it. I've never done a Rot. resto until my current project and it can be overwhelming. But if you try to do one thing at a time as money and time allow then it will get done. Worst thing you can do is look at it and not do anything. Just try to do 1 thing when you have time and it's one thing less to do. As for the box of screws and things, I bagged and tagged most everything but I have some loose things also due to the previous owner removing some things as well as the media blaster. I just look at the box and go... I'm sure your buddy whom you almost sold the car too will have some idea as to where some of it goes. Don't sweat it. Just hang in there and do your best as you can. It WILL get done.

Well the weather is warming up here finally.
Headed out this week to get the SS springs, rearend and k frame.
K frame has been powder coated

Once I get that installed I can at least start on the suspension.

Ah, I'm sure he wanted to finish it. But then he'd have $$$ in it when it seems not everyone in the family would enjoy it with him. What fun is that. If I remember correctly, he had a little misfortune and had to get body work done to his r/t. But at least thats all back together and good to go when the bug comes back.
Look in the handling forum and you'll see what Josh is wanting to do with it.....It sounds like its gonna be mean . I saw joshs old duster at MMW two years ago and it is/was really nice! You can't save em all.

I actually decided to buy and finish this car ahead of putting an engine back in the duster

Now begins project Formula X

It's not that I DIDN'T WANT to finish it.
It became more of WHEN will I ever.

I will admit that I got to the point that I was going to just "one piece at a time" the car but that would have taken forever.
I had big plans for the car, but things change in life and when you dont have anyone else in the family even remotely interested in old car's and think they are dumb to own (and race) and even get a hard time for puting model cars together, a person kinda loses the fire they once had to do this stuff.

I even got to the point of listing the R/T for sale and I was going to buy a new 2013 Challenger SRT, that idea was more appealing to others but I still got the "Unless it's a SUV made by Ford or GM why would you own it?"

So the more and more I got to thinking about it the more I wanted to keep the R/T. I thought "you know you gave up cars once before years ago for other people, dont do again".

So with that I decided to sell the Cuda to someone who will finish it (and it sounds like it's going to be a beast when it's done), keep the Coronet R/T and play and drive it when ever I FEEL LIKE IT, take the money from the Cuda and squirrel it away or spend it on what the hell ever I feel like
