71RR V code project

71RR V code project - 09/01/12 09:05 PM

Well its going on 6 yrs that I've started this car, I'm now at the point of at least being able to show some progress. Up until now I've been working on the small parts but since December of last year the bodyman has been working on the paint. Its finally getting some color and the best part is coming this winter, that is to put it together.
A little about the car,its a 71RR, V Code, 4 speed, Dana track pack, EV2 paint and black bench interior and a white roof stripe. The only option on the car is power disk brakes. And when I found this car, all the numbers matching drivetrain was still there. Since this is my first B body,I've been asking a lot of questions to Eric at the Roadrunners nest for some restoration knowledge. I thank him for his time. Now for some pictures.

Looking good gygeneral. My car is almost the same and in the same state.

That k looks good. Care to tell more about it?

Maybe I'll start a thread on my car over at the Nest or here as well. Keep the pictures coming.

I keep telling myself to post on the Nest also, maybe this weekend I'll do it.

Not sure what info you want, but I started by mildly blasting the frame and had it powder painted a semi gloss. The sway bar was powder painted a gloss black. The control arm were powder painted a raw steel color and covered with battery protectant for that cosmoline look. I did this almost five years ago, I've been working on small parts since then.

If you need anymore than that PM me.

With your 4 post lift , but youll be able to detail the whole
Asssembly rather than work over the fenders later .

I'm sure it's been done before but I have never have seen it done. My lift's right runway is moveable so I can get 44" of clearance between the runways. My K frame I believe is smaller, so I'm going try it. If anyone has experienced this please chime in. Any tips would be great.

No they don't. They reproduce the higher class panels but what I'm looking for are the base level panels that look like the picture attached and to make it more complicated the drivers side panel must not have the hole for the remote.

Re: 71RR V code project - 04/05/15 01:05 AM

Thanks for asking. After I finished assembling the car last July, when it came time to start it, it would not run correctly. In the end I had to have the carbs completely rebuilt again over the winter. This has put me back almost a year. I had to wait for the right guy to fix the work the original guy did. Basically the carbs looked good but they were not functional. Then the car got stuck in the guy's garage because of the snow last winter. I just got it back home last week. Hoping to get it finished onver the next couple months. Anyhow here are some pictures after assembly last year. I have to get the car aligned, put the stripes/decals on and undercoat the wheelwells.

Re: 71RR V code project - 04/07/15 07:46 PM

By those pictures I'm in the ballpark, I was going to have the disc shields powder coated Gloss Black or is Low Gloss more correct?

Also where did you get the anti rattle clips and hardware?
I have to order calipers and the clips next.

I'm going to Black Phosphate the bolts for the sliders etc...

Lastly the idler arm I took off (it wasn't original but super old) had a curve to it but the new Moog K7041 was straight and thought that was strange. Mine is a Power Steering car.
Thanks Ron

Re: 71RR V code project - 04/07/15 08:09 PM

Ron, I matched what original paint was still left on my dust shields to the samples the powder had on hand. It was a low gloss black. Probably was low quality gloss when new, but that's a tough environment. All of the lower control arms I have owned (including NOS), the cosmolene dipline is closer to the top rivet. Either way, nice job! And GYgeneral, your runner is looking great!

I have a picture saved from years ago with the dip line like I have it so I always followed that, if you were a day sooner I would have moved it up!!! OK so low Gloss Black it will be, I sent you a PM before and after the board changes did you get either??

What about my idler arm question can you or GYgeneral answer that for me?
Thanks again

Re: 71RR V code project - 04/08/15 01:41 AM

Here I took a picture of a Moog7041 vs my original idler arm. If you look closely one end has a slight bend to it. But my car is a manual steering car so that may be why its different.
I got my anti-rattle clips from Bill Rolik his part #2944722-3-P.
I agree the shields should be a lower gloss black. Mine are also powder coated.
