Saw that on Farcebook and all the lame responses by people who have never restored a car or have enough money to even think about it. With everything that is made for these now there should be no issue with someone giving a reasonable offer to the owner. So where would you start for price on selling a car like this? shruggy

Re: Smoking deal - 04/29/24 04:28 PM

Jim, I try my best to answer this one.

This car started off in a very similar condition, EXCEPT it was a roller. Thus had all the suspension and steering components.
I put both quarter panels, trunk floor and both extensions, both front and rear valance,, the tail light panel. the dutchman panel , the outer skin on the pass side A pillar , pass side of the firewall, entire upper cowl and floorpans on both sides of the trans tunnel ( full floors were not avail yet when the owner bought the car) driver side fender came from AMD, pass side was a clean original. You get the drift, it was rough.
I did it all except final body work and paint. Engine, trans and 4.10 Dana axle was purchased already done and got a helluva deal

At the time my shop rate was cheap at $45 an hour

We advised him not to buy and it that it would be rougher than it appeared, and it looked rough in person. BUT, he wanted a real 1968 Charger RT , 440 4psd car. And at the time costs to buy one done was not possible.

I asked him about a year after it was done if he had added the invoices. His reply was he started to but he quit adding when the total exceeded $70k . there were still quite a few to add but decided he really didn't want to know.
And that about 7 or 8 years back. I think.

Cars AND parts prices are considerably more today than they were 10 years ago when I was doing the charger. NO way would I consider taking on a project car in todays market. Partially based on prices and my age. We aint 30 years old anymore.

Keeping in mind 1970 Coronet parts are a good bit tougher to find than 1968 Charger pieces

So, based on that. This V code Superbee will be under water even in todays market if the new owner got it for free and did all the work themselves .

So, to answer whats a fair offer the way it sits. Thats going to be a different number for each and every one interested.
Myself, wouldn't take it for free with the condition that I had to do the car and not junk the hulk.

Ps, the Charger is going up for sale this fall. The owner has decided he's tired of the 4 spd, 4.10 Dana and high test fuel requirements. As to how much, I have NO idea. Thats for him to decide over the summer

He wants nice driver, thats auto ,and working A/C

Re: Smoking deal - 04/29/24 04:47 PM

I'm thinking that to get that Coronet to the level of that gorgeous Charger nowadays would take 6 digits of $$$ and several years.
Any buyer would pretty much have to have his own successful shop, a bunch of disposable income, and be young enough to finish and drive it.
Plus, be OK with having way more into it than it's worth...

And everyone complains that the price for a new Hellcat is just too much. I bought 2 of them and do not (yet) regret it. They drive great, are very comfortable and get reasonably decent gas mileage with way more get up and go than any of the old stuff. I still have one old one left...not sure why

There is a market for the newer cars. I'll be 100% honest and will admit. They are faster, more fuel efficient and more comfortable.

But I own my 1966 Satellite for NONE of the above reasons. And I will walk right past a new __________ ( fill in the blank muscle car ) to see vintage iron, no matter the manufacture.

Its an apples to oranges comparison.

I get it. Probably why I still own one old one. I also will walk past new stuff to look at old. I'm just WAY beyond wanting to deal with all the hassles and lack of comfort.

No arguments from me.

And the following is MY opinion ONLY.

The days have passed for this car to be restored to the same level it would have been .
Had it been made avail 20 years ago.

The buyers pool to take it on have dramatically lessened
Again. My twocents ONLY

Where would I start? I'd start looking for one in much better shape. Whomever buys it even at 500.00 will be upside down when the dust settles even if doing the work themselves. I suspect it will wind up a number swap to a rust free Coronet and I believe that is what the seller is looking for in a buyer beer

I was involved in restoring this 68 GSS. The owner did not care what it cost, we quit adding after $200K, and he sold it 10 years later for $125K. If it is something you want, the buy in really does not matter... twocents

How is it even possible to put 200k in a car? Knowing its a foolish thing to do in the 1st part
I can see if he paid $100k for it, then re-restored it. or a shop was charging an exorbitant amount to do it.

How ? Open wallet & not worrying about spending.
Buddy of mine, an old AWB Mopar guy being his claim to fame, and a millionaire for decades from commercial real estate & parts businesses - has a '57 Chevy 150.
He bracket races the thing, and thinks nothing of $4,000 transmissions & etc.
There's likely $150,000 in that car, because he can.
While he does a lot of the work himself, if he was writing checks for everything, it would be the most expensive stockish-appearing '57 in the Country.

Ive never been one to criticize what one does with there own money. But it does seem all logic and common sense does go out the window for some and unfortunately for some it does not end well. Im a good example of the first part.

I used to have a finical advisor and he was smart but I got tired of his remarks of some of my car related purchases were counterintuitive and I told him I have him to help make up for the money I blow. I finally got tired of him and we parted ways and things have been ok since. I set aside X amount I know I can spend and expect nothing in return. No issues and although im not a check writer on 95% of things the parts I purchase simply helps companies and the whole economic system.

Re: Smoking deal - 04/30/24 04:28 PM

A sorta similar comparison

This is a 1969 Coronet RT , numbers matching car. Red with red interior, factory air car. I do realize its hard to compare to a V code car.

But ,,,,, given the condition between the 2. I'll take the 69 any day all day long. Simply because its complete. And in the end is a body style thats more acceptable to the masses

And If I were 20 years younger, myself and this guy would be talking . This car cks A LOT of boxes for me

One would think people who can spend that kind of money would be a little more conscientious about wasting money.

I guess I'll never know how that feels. But Ive always looked at the end goal and approx costs to get it there if dont make sense, then dont do it

I agree. I try and do as much of my own work as possible, because the cost of everything has skyrocketed. I need a quarter put on a couple cars, but am afraid to even ask for a quote. I look at the pics of the Coronet above and just cant imagine the cost of replacing virtually every inch of metal on a car. Sure, its a rare car, I get it. And so does the shop that is going to restore it...and fund their next team building trip to the Cayman Islands with how much they are going to charge. My cars may not win any shows, but they are built by me, on a budget, and if anyone has negative comments, I always ask "Oh, well what does your 69 RT/SE Charger look like? Whats that....you don't have one? Then shut your hole."

2000 hours of body and paint work on a car that needed quite a bit of sheet metal replacement, I still have parts of the frame rails and trunk pieces! Have you paid a major national restoration shop to do a complete resto ever, especially lately! work

No, I havent . Nor will I.

Fortunately, Ive always been in a position I could trade labor with friends who could do work I wasn't capable of. But at the same time,,,,. Ive always looked at a restoration it has to make sense financially. If not. I'm not buying .

And i learned A LOOOOONG time ago. Dont buy rust. Its the gift that keeps on giving.

I can understand project cars are cheap initial buyin for some. It is and has always been cheaper in the end to buy one done as opposed to buying a major project car

That red on red 69 with ac is seriously rare. Iā€™ll stick with my rust free oem metal car over either of these basket cases though. I donā€™t think itā€™d be fun to do the work yourself either. Iā€™m glad somebody is out there saving cars.

Re: Smoking deal - 05/01/24 03:30 AM

i have had several customers that buy in and refuse to admit they screwed up or pass it on to others. Highest was a 180K + on a 100K BJ Scottsdale special Total investment on the ONE car ~300K. He also bought 6 more averaging 100k each. it took 20 - 60K to square 4 of them away. The other two went back to Auction.
When his wife looked at the checkbook he sent all of the remaining 5 back to BJ and lost and untold amount of money as they all went for substantially less than he had in them. don't forget the transportation, sales tax etc. The 300K car sold for 125 on a Thursday night at 8 pm. šŸ˜„ Last I knew he was still married whistling
