WIW Hemi Block and heads

WIW Hemi Block and heads - 10/18/23 02:50 PM

Trying to get an idea :

Trying to figure out what a complete engine is worth - I have ballpark values on everything else, trying to figure out going rates on block and heads.

1966 Hemi block, no exaggeration when I say it’s perfect. Never broken, no repairs, decks not whacked.
At .020” over now - only needs a light hone.
1966 casting date, no vin.
No o ring grooves, no pan rail or external/internal lightening.
Basically a stock block, equalized decks, deburred.

Again, perfect set of iron heads, lightly tootsie-rolled in the ports, std. valve sizes.

Bronzewall guides.

WIW?

Has deck been O-ringed?

Engine has had the decks and rail machined a long time ago.

I am going to raise the engine to see if the pan rail was ever stamped.

I would say 5k on the block and 2k on the heads.

We talking short block.
Or bare block and main caps?

Actually trying to determine what the whole engine is worth. The one in the picture.

I have a handle on all the other parts - just wondering what an empty block is worth today, as well as good head castings.

The pictured engine is complete, is an early 70’s Super Stock engine - 12.5 to 1, roller cam, etc.

with assy date info gone , Im thinking less than $5k for the empty block. To the resto crowd its lost its desirability and will not pull top dollar ( myself included )

Ive seen good solid empty blocks any where from $5000 to $10,000 empty depending on condition.

PS, there is complete engine in the for sale section right now for low 20s.

When I was thinking go that route last year I found several new builds in the low 20s range

Ive been quoted anywhere from 15k to 18k to build mine my hemi specialists. With 18k was to go stroker

Or approx. $8k to $10k locally . The man is a diehard Mopar guy and has built hundreds of anything/everything slant six to 440 but he has never built a 426 before so Im a little cautious

A buddy of mine has his engine out right now in Phoenix. Being done by a former top fuel crew chief.
He hopes to have it back by the end of the year with a finally cost tally then.

Super Stock engines (even then) get decked a lot. You might want to check that. The Stage 1 Diamond crossram used to bring good money but those people are dying off now.

Brought back to life a thrashed junk block last year that had the wrong hands on it for a long time. Turned out stroker pistons with stock rods work perfectly on a decked block but everything else had to be machined or special made to mate up. Could write a book on how to bring one back from the brink of being junked.
