I’d like to know what the group thinks of this car and its value, based just on this ad. If you know anything else about it hold it until we get a read of the room.

Beautiful car, love the color.
Concourse gold at MCACN nothing to sneeze at .
Car presents well, seems to drive well and understand why it is priced at $110K.
If I were a 68 GTX nut probably couldn't get much better.
Personally not my taste in body style and options other than the 4 spd.

That is nice. Wonder how many just like that they made? I bought a 340 formula s cuda from a fella that had a mirror car of that. I was sorta young and he took me for a ride. It looked stock but it ran dam well. I was used to my 69 darts dash and that GTX dash with the tach was something else. Funny the things that stick in our minds. Funny I just recalled his name and just hit google and found him easily.

That is an awesome car. I don't know how to price a concours gold #1 car above a nice restored #2 type car. If a really nice 68 GTX is worth $60-75K, does it cost another $25-$30K to reach #1 status

Gorgeous car.

Re: 68 GTX 4 speed - 07/23/23 04:48 PM

Trunk lid and tail panel look off to me. The carpet in the pedal area looks like a bad fit. I agree about it being a bit over priced. I may be picky but the wheel opening moldings don't fit well in some places.

Sharp car but not 110k sharp. Not that rare of a car I say more like 75-85k.

Re: 68 GTX 4 speed - 07/23/23 07:55 PM

Color combination would be hard to top. EE1 is not a very common color . And IMO to get one to that level requires a boatload of NOS parts. Especially rear trim and tail lights. repops or rechrome just aint gonna cut it , IMO

Ran through a BaT auction earlier this year.

Re: 68 GTX 4 speed - 07/23/23 08:02 PM

Well, Corvette Mike is arguably the most expensive place to buy a vintage Vette - but he tends to have VERY nice and rare stuff.
A fair amount of his clientele isn't exactly concerned with expense.

The car looks like a twin - if not the same car - to one that was previously discussed here; long thread, as the tedious hub cap debate droned on...
Wasn't it about an $80-something-K car then ?
I REALLY like the car, but at that $$$, I see a few nits to pick:
Still seems to me like the carpet color is wrong, and should be much darker, closely matching kick panels.
Rear seatbelt boots should be dark blue, not black.
Upper dash pad texture is "off".
I'd expect the FT to be painted, and a couple other minor details at that price - and with a Gold award.
Being a Feb SPD - and I know the SPD isn't an ironclad birthdate - I'd expect it would not have an Inland shifter, but the Hurst OEM version.
Amusingly, given the time-honored VIN tag debates here, the restorer didn't refinish the dash VIN tag - wonder if it was masked, or what ?

It was bid to to $70k on BaT back in March.

Agreed that Corvette Mike’s cars are priced really high.

Re: 68 GTX 4 speed - 07/24/23 12:59 AM

It went through some bit player auction early in the year. Don’t know the bid. It went through bat at 70k. Mecum Indy it went to 59k. I wonder about the bottom not being primer with overspray? For a gold level car that is.

I love it, but guy doesn’t seem to want to sell. I saw it hit their site at 100k. After Mecum it went up to 110k. Guess he wanted fees and transport money back. I pointed out it saves auction fees to sell private. Claims to have turned down 75k. I think that’s it for GTX. A 68 is behind 69 and 70 best I can tell. I also think a road runner is worth more these days.

I asked if it has original metal, specifically the quarters. Got typical dealer speak about “think so.” Requested pics and was told car isn’t there. I said not or bother the guy as I will not pay over market so no need to mess with pics if he isn’t ready to part with it.

68 Behind 69 and 70 for sure. And Super Bee's and RR sell for more IMHO. Also behind 69 and 70 R/T's

Might be least valuable 68-70 HiPo B-body. Or maybe 68 R/T shares same price?

Re: 68 GTX 4 speed - 07/24/23 03:02 AM

I know of a really nice 69 GTX that current owner turned down 6 figures for at Carlisle. last week. VERY high option hardtop

And might know of a high end 69 GTX ragtop, 440 4spd that can be bought. But its gonna take more than this 68 listed at to own it.

Re: 68 GTX 4 speed - 07/24/23 03:09 AM

Something to think about.

Not asking this in a negative way at all because im pretty picky over one type of mopar but how much of the buyers market reflects most of the posters opinions here? For me, one who is not really hooked on any 68,69 or 70 and simply like them all equally would have interest in this car based on my post above. For the price asked ones who have that kind of money to toss around whats another 25% on a car that will sit most the time?

If I were a buyer of this car resale value would have zero to do with it as well. Its rare for me to sell anything?

Just like the mopar parts flipping world.... ya know where 90% of my best deals come from on some of even the most rare parts????? Non mopar guys just trying to sell parts.

So what gives?

Supposedly the sticking point is it’s a 200k resto. That may be, but you can spend 200k on a pinto and it’s still only worth what the best pinto for that year is worth.

I often wonder how you could spend 200k on a restoration. Knowing all the time you would NEVER get that kind of money back out of it on its best day. One would think someone who could afford to spend that can of money would be smarter than that ..

I did a ground up on a 68 Charger RT, 440 4spd a few years back and all in done the man was in it for right about $75k, and that included the buy in for the car.

Exactly right. You have to know that going into the deal. I think the mentality extends to guys who don’t drive their ride. If you aren’t comfortable in driving, it’s because you aren’t comfortable with the dollars involved and/or are worried about the “investment” going south in you. It’s really screwed up the hobby and is a direct reason we don’t see young people getting into these things. It’s not the only one, but that’s a big part of it.

Re: 68 GTX 4 speed - 07/25/23 04:41 AM

I gotta wonder: at $200K for a Mopar B-body non-Hemi restoration -

1. What's their labor rate ?
2. How bad was the car to begin with ?
3. Parts charged at a premium ?

That's more than some really exotic (translation: inflated) car restorations I can think of.
Actually it's a lot more than the complete vintage TransAm restorations I worked on cost; but that was many years ago, and expenses are way up since then

Re: 68 GTX 4 speed - 07/26/23 03:04 AM

All depending on how bad the car is at the beginning and the end goal in mind.

I could see some shops having well into 100k before a car is done. I know for a fact of at least one 1971 Challenger conv done by a shop in northern Ky ( NO not mine ) the man had well over 100k in it once done.
And this was 340 challenger conv clone from a 318 car. That required A LOT of metal work .
Painted a deep purple color , Similar to But dont think it was FC7

Re: 68 GTX 4 speed - 07/26/23 03:35 AM

Couple years ago I was given a lead on a car in nky. Total pile for way too much money. Not one useable piece on the car. Would’ve been cool all done though. Turns out the guy has a resto shop I’d never heard of, ever. Made some bold claims about who he works for and what he does, etc. the big thing that sticks with me is he said he gets north of 200k to do a car, more like 250k. Maybe people are out there that will pay that. Doesn’t matter to me what anybody pays, the market sets the price and if somebody wants to drop their dough like that don’t expect me to be the government and bring a bailout package.

Re: 68 GTX 4 speed - 07/26/23 03:11 PM

Not so sure about a RR being worth more then a GTX, if you compare its a lesser car (but both are great) far more RR's were made and are around, I know restoring a RR does not cost as much. those special GTX parts such as the finish panel will cost you for nice ones.
