Stuffing in a 440 and 4-speed

Stuffing in a 440 and 4-speed - 12/31/10 11:43 PM

I'm constantly grazing on For Sale ads for the perfect NON - MOPAR to stuff a 440 and A833 4 speed into.
I've seen some Sapparos but it's too Ricer for me.
Basically, I don't want to turn one metric bolt.
And I don't want to go tubular to make it fit. I want that BB to cradle in there as if it came from the factory that way.

After a long, long, time searching, I'm stumped.
What kills me is that I see BBC's stuffed into just about anything.

Re: Stuffing in a 440 and 4-speed - 01/01/11 07:18 AM

I built this 1931 Ford Coupe three or four years ago with a 383, A-833 4 speed overdrive, and 8 3/4 rearend in it.

It was fun!!

Nice job.
And half the people at the car shows look at it and say "what engine is that?" and the other half say: "Wow, a Hemi"...

Right?

A friend stuffed the entire drivetrain from a wrecked '70 440-6 Coronet R/T into a '70 Gremlin (wasn't Mopar at the time). Wish I had pics, everything including the 833 and Dana fit pretty well.

How about a bricklin sv-1? Project ones pop up for a reasonable price from time-to-time and those cars were originally V8/rwd. I think one with a 440/4sp would be very cool.

I always figured them as being a great candidate. Trouble is, ever since Wayne's World, ugly little AMC's have become pricey...

Believe it or not, I looked at those POS's extensively when Malcom started shipping them. Every single one of them came with a bill of materials of parts MISSING as delivered and would be supplied later.
After closely crawling all over them, my only thought was that those VW dune buggy conversion kits were of better quality.

Maybe that's a good thing. Would give you the chance to go over the car and fix all the little things the factory did wrong if you picked up a project one for a decent price. Hell, I find myself doing that on my old mopar.

I have seen a few cars popping up lately that were popular for those v converions back in the 70's an 80's. Try checking out early 70's oldsmobile Opels, dodge colts, datsun 240z and Volvo p1800. Those have always been cool upgrades, had good chassis, suspension decent pricing and modernish designs.

I've wanted a Pacer wagon for yrs. someday I'll find the right one. what about the little Dodge D-50's and the Plymouth Arrow pickups. Heck even an Arrow would be cool. I just found a late 40 Studebaker pickup that's screaming for that drivetrain!!

Go out there and eat up those Monster Miatas for breakfast...

Sexiest? Hmmm. Maybe. Picked up this a few months ago. Wanting to do a v-8 conversion. Not sure what direction yet. Sb chevy is cheapest/easiest over a Lexus. That Conquest TSI was a good looking car too but I know, NO METRIC!

What about this? My daughter's '87 Dodge Daytona Turbo Z Would take a few hours work, but guess it would be worth it. Saw a Chrysler Strattus once, with the 440 MOPAR engine. Approx. the same ammount of work I guess.

We saw a mini van at Indy for the Mopar nats years ago that had a nasty 440 in it. It was like listening to a ventrilaquist, you knew where the sound was coming from ,but it just didn't seem right. I asked the guy why and he just replied-------- why not?

Re: Stuffing in a 440 and 4-speed - 02/02/11 12:04 AM

As for the few hours work: Could you possibely understand a joke? And for the modelyear: I just wrote what is in my Norwegian DMV's registrationpapers. If anybody can tell me for sure it's an '86, I'd sure appreciate that.

From my point of view the above wasn't the most important here. The car was simply my input in this thread as an idea of what to go to work on to have something special. Or in other words, my humble answere to the question asked.

And by the way, The Strattus is also a FWD.

On the Daytona, in the VIN a 86 is a G and a 87 is a H. I think it is the 10th digit.

How about a 440 in a '81-'92 Camaro. Plenty around to pick and with a good supply new and used parts. Besides, it would be throwing it back in the faces of Chevy lovers, just your style.
