Black paint.. BC/CC vs Single stage? - 04/15/10 12:44 AM

Im asking here because SS paint seems to still be used by the street rod people...

Im new to painting a car.
I have a 33gal compresser, a gravity fed non-HVLP gun, and a brick garage.

Ive sprayed small stuff before and ive done whole cars in flat black sealer. But ive never tryed doing a "nice" paint job.

Would SS be simpler to do with my not so perfect conditions? BC/CC looks like i need to have my timing right between stages and a stable environment with zero humidity...kinda hard in a brick garage. . Screw ups look like a pain to fix.
If I screw up SS stage a little wont it just "buff out"?

Any runs, dirt, dust, etc in a non-metallic single stage color should be pretty easy to wetsand and buff out.

I have seen some great paint jobs come out of garages. Make sure you have good lighting and make the work area as clean and dirt free as possible. My uncle paints in his garage/shop and always wets the floor down a little so the air from the gun doesn't kick up any dust.

For a beginner single stage is alot more forgiving. Not to mention cheaper and alot less work to do. Dont skimp to much on the quality of paint and you will have a nice finish that will last. Wet sanding and buffing will take care of any imperfections as well. Good luck.
