1950 plymouth straight axle - 04/02/10 03:49 PM

will the straight axle set up from a 1950 dodge 1/2 ton pickup fit under a 1950 plymouth without much trouble? it looks like the dodges steering box mounts in about the same spot as the ply. i want a straight axle for my business coupe, but can't afford a speedway motors kit. any help or pics of what other guys have done. i want to use the original frame rails too.

Measure the track width

Wheels are going to stick outside the fenders will be my guess

if the tracking is to wide but not by much, you can always get a rim with a off set to bring it back in,,depending how much its off,,,

you may want to ask this axel question over on the H.A.M.B site,,or google straight axel car boards something like that

I have a 1/2 ton chassis, 48 - 50 , not sure which. I am using the body and box on a later chassis. pick up axle has a bend in it that may not look right to you, I can get a pic Saturday.

some time ago, hot rod magazine did an article about building a gasser, using an A100 axle that was narrowed by cutting a section out of the center and welding it back together with reinforcing plates added. if you have [ or know someone who does] excellent welding skills, i would not be afraid to try this on the axle you have available. just my opinion.

I have a straight axle from a 50 dodge truck in my 48 plymouth club coupe the width was real close its alittle wider but with a skinny tire you don't really notice the only real problem that I had was the frame rails are to short in front so the leaf springs where kind of hanging in the air

Interesting swap. I'd think you could cut and weld the I-beam also.

You guys may want to remove your email addresses from view. Otherwise you'll be getting spam email from all over the world.
