Went and looked at it Sunday, dragging it home Thursday. More pictures coming Thursday or Friday.

Pretty rough 48 Plymouth club coupe. Pretty much missing the bottom 8"-10", but above that looks OK. Plans call for a mid 60s style street driven dirt track car. The remains of the body are going on my 90 Dakota frame, plan on mounting a roll cage with out door bars (I'm getting way too old to be climbing in), with pipe style front and rear bumpers, tires sticking just outside of the radized fenders. I haven't desides if I'm going with the whole number thing yet, I'll figure that out then I get there. At this point I'm thinking of using the 3.9 efi with the 5 speed, because its here and paid for. Might end up with a 318 or a 360 if I can get a fi one, I'm really tired of dealing with carbritaion. Probably going to have some 48 suspension pieces for sale, if they are any good. If anyone needs a decent 8' Dakota box & rear bumper, check the classifieds here (shameless plug) Gene

The V6 should be a bit easier to fit in the fan area, but the exhaust on the driver's side may give you fits. The standard V8 fix is A body manifolds, but there aren't any for the V6.

if you use the dak chassis, is it set up already for the 3.9/5spd combo ? how much modifying will you have to do on the front frame horns ?

Neat idea for a toy.

I vote no on a V6. That thing needs to run and sound like it really is/was a racecar. An over-cammed small block with minimal exhaust sounds like the perfect motor for it.

....and yes it does need a number on the side.

Well, this thing is real rough, but will work out for what I intended to do with it. I got to post the picyures one per post, so I'm going to drag this out....

The Dakota is still complete, with the 3.9 and the 5 speed intact. It needs a new clutch and a bunch of other maintenance items because the clutch went out April last year and its been sitting in my side yard since. I'm intending on cutting the cab and reusing the floor pan and firewall. There will be a 6 point roll cage (4 post cage and rear kickers) and probably round bar front and rear push bar bumpers.

About the car. Basically, there are no floors in it, from the frame outward is gone on both sides. The guy cut out what looked like rotted trunk pans also. It really is just a shell.

When I got there to load it, he drug it away from the fence line where its been sitting for a long time. The guy runs a well digging place, so once it was up on the blacktop, he brought out the truck with the hoist on it. We wrapped a chain around the engine and picked the front end about 2' off the ground. Around the back, he had a bobcat with forks on it that he lifted the rear of the car on. All I had to do was back the trailer under it and tie it down. Probably the easiest car I've ever loaded. It sure won't be that easy to unload it.

As you can see, there really is not much left. The guy cut the kick out off the bottom of the passenger side door and rocker. He was going to cut off the driver side also, you can see the tape line in the 1st picture. It really wasn't much of a loss, the steet metal down there is paper thin and the rockers are non-existant. The frame looks decent, though the front cross member may be ify. Both front and rear suspensions are intact and work. All 4 brakes are froze up. I'm probably going to sell the original suspension. I'll have to get a better look at the frame. I also got all the front chrome and some bent up side chrome trim that can probably be straightened. The flathead is still there too, though probably locked up. I paid $200 for this, I may have been able to deal him down, but currently scrap is at $175 a ton around here, and I think its end was very near.

Supposedly the car was originally one of the western Chi-town burbs cop car back when it was new. There was the remains of a spot light hanging on the driver side piller and a big STOP light amounst the box-o-stuff. The guy I got it from (It was a father/son deal) said it had been sitting in the woods for over 10 years when he got it, he started working on it and its been sitting along the fence for at least 10 years. I can believe that.

My son has been giving me a rough time about the V6 also. I have a slant 6 here that ran great, but I'd have to get a trans. I also have a efi 360 here, but I'd have to buy that truck its in. Then I'd need a trans for that also, don't think the 5 speed from the 3.9 would hold up well behind the 360. The idea was this was suppose to be a cheap, easy to drive ride. Feeding a v6 compaired to the 360 would be a lot easier, that Dakota got 22-24 mpg. That alone may make the difference between going for a ride and sitting home looking at the cool car. I already have 1 cool 360 ride that sat most of last year because I didn't have the money to feed it. Cool is one thing, reality is another. Gene

Looks like a nice project, what's left looks pretty straight. Run the 6, a running hot rod regardless of what's in it is better than one sitting by the fence.

i dont see any thing wrong with the V-6 idea,,ive considered it my self,and if you have a complete set up with computer,and wiring,and intank fuel pump set up ,then why not,,dependable and gas is not going to get any less expensive,,as the economy gets better gas and fuel wil be going up,,if you think not your only kidding your self,,,i say do the V 6 swap,,

i have a dumb question,,why do they call it a club coupe ? is it because its not a busniess mans coupe??? i didnt know if they had a busniess mans coupe in 46 ,47, 48

Hey Gene, this is Charles. You do have yourself a good project there. Cant wait to come up and do some wrenching on that one but there is one thing, you said you didnt know about putting the numbers on it? I'm thinking I know a really good blue color that would go really good on that car and have some really good ideas about numbers too! Just let me know and i'll help you out with those two things for it!!!!!!

this car is in fact a Business coupe...you can tell by the flat back window and the small quarter windows. The Club Coupe had a back seat as well. They had the business coupe from 35-53

i thought the roof and quarter windows looked different from what ive seen on 46,47,48, i do like the busniess coupe look better...

Hey Charles.

I'll bet I know what # you have in mind.

For the record, this car is a club coupe. The differences between a business coupe and the club coupe are in the roof line, and seating. The club coupe came with a back seat and a longer roof line. The rear quarter window is longer and at a less sharp angle. The trunk lids are different between the two cars, club coupes have shorter trunk lids. Inside the car, a business coupe has a package storage box behind the single bench seat, where the club coupe has a rear seat, though there is not much leg room for the rear seat passengers. Club coupes are rated as 6 passengers and business coupes are rated as 3 passenger cars.

Unless both were sitting side by side, you would be hard pressed to tell the differences.

About the car, I'm in the process of laying out a plan of action. I will need to brace the body before I do anything with it, there is only about 20" of support left between the remaining floor and the rear wheel wells on each side and a few inches at the firewall on each side holding this thing together. There is nothing between the firewall and the rear wheel wells! The doors and rear quarters are hanging in the breeze. Even the center of the trunk floor is gone. I'll have to get some pictures of it tomorrow. I'm going to brace it with 3/4" conduit because its cheap. I'm expecting I'll need 8-10 10' sticks!

Fortunately the floors and box floors are solid on the Dakota. I'm about ready to take that Dakota apart. Gene
