Dodge version of a Divco milk truck? - 12/21/09 02:57 AM

Did Dodge build a truck similar to a Divco milk truck? Seems like I've seen something like it before, but can't find anything in my searches.

I think they called them a Route Van. The had an independant rear end so the floor could be lower.

Those don't look too bad, not as nice looking as a Divco but could be pretty neat.

~5 years ago, there were a couple of old Dodges that turned up that had a rounded side profile and a roll up rear door. Wanted one, but had too many projects at the time. Haven't seen one since....can't find a picture either...

I have a 54 Dodge truck service manual. The route truck has what looks like a hollow spindle bolted to what looks a lot like a front axle (runs side to side). This axle is attached to the leaf springs. A short drive shaft is mounted to the spindle with pressed bearings and connected to the the splined centers of the rear drums. (picture a modern front wheel drive hub/axle shaft, only more primitive, but with both hub mounts attached to an axle.) The other end of the drive shaft is connected by u joints to the center section mounted by "arms" to a subframe attached to the truck frame.

If the book wasn't in such rough shape I'd scan the pictures. Its a pretty cool looking thing, but I bet it was a real pain to work on. Gene

I don't think the route trucks ever got a Hemi, most were delivery trucks with the flathead 6. Little room for much else. Also, by the early to mid 60s, the funky rear axle was gone. Had a guy come in my shop with a 63-65 (can't remember which) and it had a standard 8 3/4. There was also a route van running around here with a big truck (1 or 1 1/2 ton) frame under it. Gene

Seems the Route Vans like pictured above can still be found for not a lot of money. Just trying to get a vision of how one would look as a hot rod.
