dodge red ram hemi vs polly question - 12/01/09 01:34 AM

i figured this is where the guys hang out that like the vintage stuff,,maybe i can get an answer,if there is one,,,,

i am looking at a 241 dodge polly motor via e mails,,the pics are not that great,,
my 241 has some problems,,this block would fix me right up,,,

question,,my 241 has no motor mount bosses,,and i thought none of the red rams did,,i thought they used that horse shoe shaped mount off the bottom of the timing cover,, the red rams also use a old style freeze plug, looks like a saucer,,or a dished quarter,,,not the taperd style on say a LA motor,,, any way

the pics i recieved show the vin as being a truck polly motor,,and the pic of the motor shows thats it is a dodge polly,, but the freeze plug pic i recieved shows a modern tapered style freeze plug and motor mount bosses,,, any one know any more then me,,,,ide like to pick this up,,thanks in advance don

I happen to be holding a 54 Dodge truck factory service manual. It shows the 241 as not having the motor mount bosses and the old style core plugs. The book also shows a 331 (bigger bore and longer stroke then the 241) that was installed into the larger trucks. In the pictures of the 331, it does have the motor mount bosses and the more modern core plugs. So, are you sure you are looking at a 241 and not the 331? Both were available in the 54 trucks, which were the 1st trucks the V8 was available (according to what I've read.) Suppose maybe the 241 was updated to the larger block? Gene

Hmmm, that would be a tough choice for me, stay with the 241 easy(?) bolt in for what you have set up in the car or go to the bigger 331 but have to fab up new mounts plus?

off topic, but how do you like the 241? I have a 270 that i've been wanting to build, but unsure how it will run. do you have any pix?

I have two D44 /241 Hemis. No mount ears on either, one block has the convex core plugs, other is bare no plugs in it for reference.I think some Dodges had side mounts, not sure about 241 or 270's.Maybe on a truck block? I was going to say post this on the Hot Heads forum, but I think you did already!

ok thanks for all the replys,,

1st yes posted on hot heads,,ill call bob

2nd for only 241 C.I,,i was surprised how it runs, even tho it has a re ground cam, thats too big,but remember its 241 c.i, its no tire fryer, just a cruiser with kool looks,

3rd,from the pics its looks as small as a 241 should, with smooth polly valve covers, with some sort or bracketry on the valve covers,,according to the motor vin he gave me it shows as a dodge poly,,331 bigger yes,but ide have to change over a lot of stuff i would think,,,331 would be a chrysler,,,wouldnt the valve covers say spit fire ,,,or what ever the chrysler polly was ??

4 the motor mount bosses and modern style freze plugs is what now makes me wonder,,i suppose you may be able to pound a modern freeze plug in to that block,,,

i suppose a 331 for the price wouldnt be bad,,,but i was hoping to repair all the stuff on my 241 with this block,,not that i dont think i cant get this one to be dependable,,

one funny thing is,,they replaced this so called dodge 241 poly with a modern 318LA motor,,and stole the points dizzy out of the 241,im pretty sure the 331 dizzy wouldnt fit in a 318 with out modifacation to the shaft ?

Many moons ago I had an engine out of a 55 Chrysler Windsor, it was a 301 poly, the 331s came in the poly version when the hemis jumped to 354 in 56. I do not remember any writing on the poly valve covers but this was about 40 years ago. I rebuilt it and ran it in a 56 DeSoto FireFlite coupe for several years an eventually put it in a 59 Dodge TownWagon. I cannot remember the motormounts but I know how much steam and smoke appears when one of those flat freeze plugs pops out and dumps a load of water and antifreeze on a hot exhaust pipe.

I used No. 1 Permatex and flatten the disk exactly the right amount. They are convex to start with and there is a step milled in the block.

The Dodge 315 and 325 use conventional freeze plugs and have side motor mount bosses. PM me about a 241 block if you need one.

And would be a very nice upgrade to a 241.

tr waters,, thanks ill keep you in mind,,,its not that i need a 241 block,,mine is repairable i believe,,,but this poly motor that found me is turning in to a mystry,,if it is what it is said to be,,its a good deal for me,,,but nothing adds up,,if it were a 315/325 the dizzy would not of interchanged in to the LA 318 they replaced this so called 241 poly with,,he just sent me the block casting numbers,,and i cant find these in my hemi source book,,1635729 and 56 under it,, for 1956 im guessing,,,more researching of this motor,, to come lol

Looks like 1635729 is a 270 Dodge,same deck height block as a 241.

thank, for searching,,, i searched every chart on the internet,,it didnt come up on any of them,,there is a book out with all the casting numbers and tons of early hemi info,,

so i googled the casting number,,it took me to a topic on one of mabye the same site you found,,asking the same question,,its a 56 dodge truck 270 poly,,now i have to decide if i should work with what i have,,or get the 270 and convert it to a hemi,,pistons arent to bad just over 400 bucks for a set,,but depending what i can or cant use out of my super low mileage 241, it could add up to close to or over 2 grand, can probably do a 5.7 modern hemi for a little over that,,or throw in a 318 i have,,,,,
