More race truck progress - 04/13/09 04:45 AM

I thought I would start another thread with new progress on the race truck project.

I finally got a chance to get some work done on it. I got all the stock toyota frontend cut off and got the mustang II frontend installed and all boxed in and plated. man it feels great to be working on it again Ron...

off with the old toyota stuff:

here is the mustang II frontend in place and some of the plates installed:

well here is what it looks like now after 2 days of cutting, welding and grinding

Refresher, Ron...what's the grand plan for this one?

And thanks for the pics. Gives me a better look at what kinda work an MII install is like.

This truck has a 4" chopped top and it will have a 41 willys nose on it, I have a 493(440)stroker kit and a set of edelbrock heads and a race trans to go into it as well as a 4.10 Dana with ladder bars.
I want to run around 10.0 at 135mph

check out this thread below to see how this build has gone so far. Ron...

got all the stock mustang stuff on and set it down on the ground and test fitted the hood, I am going to have to do some trimming to get the willys nose to mate up with the dodge cab Ron....

just an extra shot...

As I recall and of course Ron correct me if I am wrong but that is a stock MII clip. So if you are looking at picking up an aftermarket MII cross member it may look or fit a little differently depending on the application.

Ron great work as always you are an inspiration for me to get moving on projects once the rain stops.

your right, putting in a stock mustang cradle in is a little different than putting in an aftermarket one, like a fatman unit.

the stock mustang frontend has the top hat(where the upper arms attach) and the lower crossmember are all one piece. where an aftermarket one is separate.

with an after market one you mount the new lower crossmember to the bottom of the frame and then you put on the 2 upper(top hats) pieces and weld it all up.

with a stock mustang crossmember you have to trim the frame till the mustang unit clears everything and then you have to measure from side to side and top to bottom and front to back and when your sure its where it needs to be you weld it up and I make plates to box it all in and make it strong

What was the reason for ditching the toyota front end?

it was an older style frontend with single thin rotors and the torsion bars were in the way for the engine and trans, the plan all along was to go with the mustang II style frontend.
I have Tube "A" arms for it as well as big brakes and a new manual rack and pinion setup

Thanks Pat

well I am now at the point of no return

I fitted and "CUT" the willys hood, and found out that it will have to be widened down the middle also

so I started cutting and fitting and now it is Klecoed in place and it looks like it goes from nothing in the front to about 2 1/2" at the rear.
Oh boy glass and resin work ahead

well thats streetrodding you have to just work through the problems you come across Ron...

Looks like the fit is perfect after you cut it though! What are you planning to do about side panels, if any?

I thought about leaving them off(to let more air out) but when you look at it from the front it looked a little weird and you could see to much of the firewall area, but the sides had to come off as the body line is opposite to the dodge. dodge goes out heading down and the willys goes in heading down. so it looks like I will glass that area so that the body lines and body below blend in the way they should.
I knew that the hood was going to be the biggest challenge making this nose and body work together.

I thought about using a dodge hood and nose cone and make it meet the willys center section but I felt that the hood would be pretty heavy in steel so I cut up the willys glass hood yeah I know crazy.... Ron...

Re: More race truck progress - 04/16/09 01:05 AM

impressive work ron ! in this case, i think glasswork will be easier than trying to do this in steel. oh, and by the way.......i think we are all a little crazy........
Posted By: leavitt4

Re: More race truck progress - 04/16/09 01:05 AM

hey ron why dont you just make a peice up for the sides that are luvered so it will still hide the firewall but yet still let the engine breath im sure it would be a chalange but it would solve your problem and with your abbility im sure you could pull it off

speaking of crazy moparx have you had a chance to get any more done on the humpback???

leavitt4, I set the side pieces in place and it looks like it might work out just fine. if I went with some kind of louvers they would have to be metal and i want to stay with the glass hood to keep the truck light. Ron...

had my grandson here today so I couldn't get to much done, man can a 2 year old get dirty

Yes Arno we will be at the fling

Re: More race truck progress - 04/17/09 12:47 AM

nothing to report on the humpback. it's been a long [difficult] winter. i'm preparing to go into the rochester[minnisota] clinic at the end of may and hopefully get straightened around health wise. as for ANY progress on anything, i was suprised the wiring i did on the LT1/55 chevy turned out good - it fired on the first crank and runs good ! [well, as good as can be expected for a brand X..........

I just caught this thread! The truck is comming along nicely!
The hood won't be any hill for a climber! LOL
I like what you did with the Mustang II front end.
Keep up the good work.

Re: More race truck progress - 04/21/09 06:31 AM

Thanks Mark and Jon, It feels good to be working on it again, I got some more done today after I went out and got some more fiberglass mat (I have a case of it here someplace, but do you think I could find it?)

I made some small pieces of metal that were shaped like the body and Klecoed them to put the side panels out instead of in and I had to put a piece of metal behind the side panels near the front to keep it in place and then went under the hood and stared mat and resin, its coming out pretty good so far . Ron...

Re: More race truck progress - 04/22/09 12:18 AM

Yes, this is my job, I get to stay home and build cars. I just need to sell squattie and the 48 ply coupe to make this years pay...

I got some more glassing done today, man am I itchy again(shower time)
anyways here are a few more pics of the hood going back together, its almost ready to be removed and glassed underneath. it really is starting to fit like it belongs there Ron...

Does the new body line go into the radius at the front and then just fade away as it nears the fender?

If so, that is cool. It is a very neat way to deal with that "unfriendly to customizing" body line on the dodge.

No the body line just fades away as it goes forward just like the willys did. but that would have been a cool idea.

when I cut the side panel out I thought about leaving it off(less work and to let air out)
It looked good from the side but when you stood in front of the truck it looked odd to me,
so I decided to put them back on. Ron....

Nice progress on Squattie Ron. Here I've been procrastinating bonding a scoop to the hood of my Dakota. And you've practically built a hood from scratch, in what, 3 weeks? I agree, your work is VERY inspiring.

I like your brothers car also. Where were you in 1985? Around here. I keep forgetting what years you lived up this way.

Re: More race truck progress - 05/18/09 04:11 AM

Ron was born and raised in Rochester... and I believe he moved here in 1992?

Btw, I will be over on Wednesday hopefully to clear a spot for the Duster. Finals will finally be OVER!

well back to a little work on the race truck, I removed the frontend and set the motor and trans into the frame for the first time today

I plan to have the fire wall curved so that it misses the engine and I may lower the engine a little more, but sitting where it is now it would be easy to work on it.
here are some pice of the engine in place. Ron...

Its really working out pretty good.
my $50.00 swapmeet headers fit great,

real easy, I fit the radiator and that fits perfect too
I made the template for the engine plate larger to

Re: More race truck progress - 06/19/09 06:19 AM

I got the dr rear fender shortened now.
these fenders are off a 50 dodge PU and they have like a 33"
opening and I felt it was to large so I cut 2" out of the middle to shrink it a little and welded it back together. Ron...

here is the stock fender:

and now 2" smaller:

getting some more done on the race truck - 06/29/09 06:10 AM

I have a little bit more finished up.
I cut the bed side out for tire clearance
and mocked up the fender.

I made a cardboard hood scoop to get a pattern for the one I want to make for it.

My friend Curt milled out the front engine plate and
I fitted it to the engine.
it fits great . here are a few pics. Ron..

I would make sure that you are able to remove the rear tires without to much trouble. I am assuming that you will have long wheel studs. They can make it tuff sometimes. I've seen where guys have had to either deflate the tire to get it off, or remove the lower coil over bolt and drop the rear suspension to be able to remove the tires.
Keep coming with the pics!

so yes I will make sure I can get them off easily Ron...

Re: getting some more done on the race truck - 05/28/10 06:36 PM

just a little update on the race truck and roadster PU projects. the Dana is now out of the truck, now that I have my measurement to get it narrowed, (I will drop it off Tuesday to be narrowed) and I cut the grill opening out and trimmed down the 58 ford grill to start fitting it to the willys nose

I also picked up a very clean "B" body 8 3/4 for the roadster PU and the body is at the sand blasters and should be done today or tuesday

I have been working on overkilling the frame for the roadster PU as you can see by the pictures

so anyway some work is getting done on both projects and that feels good to be going forward Ron...

I still need to finish up the back of the frame:

8 3/4 and roadster PU frame(upside down)

RON very kool, dont know how i missed this topic,,your card board scoop sorta looks like a shelby scoop used on the 05-09 mustang and the ac cobra,, it looks great,,you may want to check out one of those as to not building one,,,

and yes tire fitment issues,,ill try posting a pic,,33 tall x 22 wide radials on stock early A wheel wells,, only have to deflate the tire if the car is high enough off the ground rear end hanging on the 4 link and shock,,the key is a rounded side wall tire,,,hoosiers and a few others have a rounded side wall like a dirt roundy round tire,,mickeys have a more squared off side wall making it harder to get a big tire on and off

nothing new to report on the race truck I have been trying to finish up the paint job on my brothers 32 plymouth sedan and helping Jon on his 40 project.
then I need to get back on to the roadster pu(for sale car)
and then back to the race truck, man I hope I can race in 2012...
I have decided to get a straight axle for the front and build it more like a GASSER from the early 60's
so much for the mustang II frontend I already did

something like this

Ron, I am looking for the Gasser wheels and the Fueler wheels for my project. Any idea's on where I can get a set? 4 inch wide for front and 14 wide for rear.

If you find some 14 wide please let me know. The widest I've been able to track down are 10".

the et "altered" wheels are similar to the "fuler" wheels and are listed in 15x14 & 15x16. the "as cast" wheel is without polish. i'm pretty sure that is what i want for the rear of my humpback.

mark, i think those are the same as the "altered" wheel but they have the allen head in the spoke area, and it looks like they don't come in an "as cast" finish.

can't wait to get back to work on it.
there is a change in plans again.
I'm going to get it so It can run and track ready. and then I will detail and finish it later if and when some $$$$$ come my way.
so it won't be a fast or finished as I would like, but at least it will let me have some fun with it. Ron...

No I don't mind, I really need to get some more progress pictures and post them.
I now have most of the firewall finished, and the master cyl and brake peddle done as well, as is the trans tunnel.

I have the dzus clips all on now for holding the front fenders and nose section in place.

I am working on making and mounting hood hold downs today.

Oh and fed ex just showed up with my Tubular upper and lower "A" arms

I am staying with the mustang II front end now,
I don't have the $$$$$ to put an axle under it.
so it will be a slammed on the ground Gasser and not a nose high Gasser... Ron...

Looks like you have move the engine back a few inches since the earlier photos?

Is that because of hood clearance issues with the rocker covers at the front of motor?

How far back are you having to move the firewall?
Posted By: Mopar Ron

Re: getting some more done on the race truck - 03/29/12 11:57 PM

the stock dodge firewall is about 3" towards the front of the truck.
I cut that 3" off and I also put a bow in the new firewall of about 2" to clear the engine. I wanted the engine set back as far as I could without getting to intrusive into the cab.

I left the 1" lip that the hood sets on the cab.

the engine is still in the same place as it was in the earlier pictures

looks real good ron ! do you have any thoughts on fabbing a steering column ? i see you have a quick release setup on yours. i was thinking on the line of 1 3/4 tube[or so] for the jacket and 3/4 or 1" for the shaft. what did you use for bearings ?

I used a lower bearing from a dakota column I had here for the top and a bearing from some other mopar column I had laying around for the bottom and a piece of tubing from something else and made them all work Ron...

Re: getting some more done on the race truck - 02/25/13 07:53 PM

got a little work done this week and got some neat stuff at the Big 3 swap meet last weekend

I mounted the shifter and cable and cut out the dash for the gauge panel.
and picked up some new VDO gauges (volt, water and oil) at the swap meet.

but the GREAT buy was I picked up 4 quarts of house of Kolor Tangelo orange pearl,
that is the color I really wanted to do this truck but it was going up in price so fast I thought I would have to pass on it.

it goes for like $90.00 a quart now
I got mine for $65.00 a quart and no tax
so $260.00 for a gallon is not bad.

here are some pics.

this is the color, this is the can of left over paint from the 63 wagon.

Oh and I picked up this scoop for $25.00

good score ron ! glad to see progress ! what do you think about the hex style of quick connect steering couplers as to the spline type ? i got 2 disconnects in the hex stlye, but ? also, what is your column diameter ? i'm making my column, but i am incorporating tilt/tele too.
Posted By: Hemi Allstate

Re: getting some more done on the race truck - 02/27/13 04:33 AM

A lot of great scores at the swap meet Ron!
Does the orange require a white base under it?
So glad to see you back to work on this truck!

Re: getting some more done on the race truck - 02/27/13 06:13 PM

Eric, the column is 1 1/2" it is what I had around here and the bearings were from some other columns I had, as far as the quick release hex goes, that is what the off road shop here had and so far it seams to work OK, I never had a splined one.

mark, I will use white sealer as a base for the orange but I have shot it over buff polyprime and it looked OK as well.

Thanks Mark I think so too.

got a little more done now
got the gauges mounted and the shifter is all working now.

i trimmed and fitted the grill material(58 ford) and resined in some studs to mount it so that is now off the list.
and I have been working on a rear pan, I will get some pictures later tonight... Ron...

got most of the rear rolled pan finished,
I made it strong and part of the bed so when the bed is removed it can set on the license plate area and the front of the bed and then the fenders wont touch the ground

Thanks John I haven't got much done on this truck lately but I have started back on the 46 COE pick up project,
that is the one on a 93 Dakota chassis complete with 5.2 efi engine and 518 trans, I need to get a wiring harness for it,
I have been making a removable floor for it to get access to the engine and I made a cover for the EFI, injectors and air cleaner.
this is the cover made from left over dakota parts
hope to get back on to the race truck as soon as I get the COE done. Ron
