A sound system for my coupe and my pickup?

A sound system for my coupe and my pickup? - 10/10/21 11:12 PM

I have a 48 Plymouth coupe on a 90 Dakota chassis, and I have a 49 Dodge pickup on a 94 Dakota chassis. Neither have any kind of a sound system in them, so neither has an antenna, speaker (or speaker locations) nor any wiring for any radio. I don't particularly want to poke a hole in the body for an antenna.

No music has been OK for 10 years with the coupe, but we have arrived at the point some music might be nice on those long cruises. To say I have not kept up with modern sound systems would be an understatement, the last non-factory radio I messed with was over 20 years ago.

Being uneducated on the sound systems of the modern era, Is there something I can get where I can play tunes for a couple hours at a time that is compact enough (music source and speakers) to move between both vehicles? whatever could sit on, or under a seat, both vehicles already have the usb ports to charge my wife's phone. We often use her phone for directions, so the music source would have to be independent of her phone. Something I could record music onto would not be out of line, but then I would also need a way to load the music onto whatever.

Suggestions? Gene

Depending on how quiet it is, a smart phone and bluetooth speaker can do the trick and if you are running a 12v system you can charge them easily

. I put a couple speakers in my package tray and wired them to a bluetooth amp on my 51, uses my smartphone for music. But that's a more permanent setup.

Thank you for the response.

Both the car and the truck are pretty quite, the coupe has a turbo muffler behind a cat, and the truck has a glass pack behind a cat, both are 3" exhaust. Both have 12 volt modern electronics (both are EFI).

The only smart phone here is my wife's. I have an old flip phone. Adding another smart phone is $75/month, is there another option? I sort of comprehend a bluetooth amp, could you please clarify? Pretend I know nothing and we will probably understand each other...

The way I understand it, an amplifier with bluetooth capability means your phone is (wirelessly) connecting to the amp rather than the car's radio.

You say you don't want a phone payment, but you don't need the 'latest and greatest' phone either to have bluetooth capability. You can probably pick up a slightly older model for cheap. I'm currently using an i-phone 8 plus (i-phones are up to, what? 13 now?) and I stream music all the time with no issues. I bought my phone when it was new, but it currently sells for under $300 (just using my phone as an example). Also, if you don't mind a few commercials, you don't have to pay for the music streaming apps either. I use i-heart and spotify. (I've found spotify to be more reliable)

Or as mentioned also, you could just get a portable bluetooth speaker. You won't have surround sound obviously, but the depth and clarity of some of the speakers out there is incredible. One plus on going this route is you can use the speaker anywhere you want, not just the car. I have a cheap speaker I picked up a few years ago, and I use it at work, in my truck, in my shop, a lot of places.

Hope this helps a little. cool

Their sales guys are very knowable and can set you up with a complete system for your vehicles. I have used them for my 55 Dodge truck and my rat Rod.

A bluetooth amp is similar to any other amplifier used use in an audio system, but includes the ability to wirelessly stream music from a bluetooth source. You don't need a smart phone to bluetooth stream music though. There are MP3 players that will do that. But you will need to load your music on the player.

This is the amp I used, I would not recommend it though. It is very voltage sensitive and if it gets a bit too high (about 13v) it shuts off. I had to build a voltage regulator to feed it. It works now, but occasionally it loses it's pairing and I have to redo it.

Years ago, 1990 to be exact, I drove from San Diego to Memphis using a boombox and a bunch of cassettes for music. I did have an AM/FM radio in my 64 300 but back then music choices across a lot of that trip was limited (C&W or Hispanic) and generally things I didn't listen to. Lot's of D cell batteries were used up on that trip.

I agree! Those guys are very knowledgeable and helpful! I put a Clarion head unit, Rockford Fosgate amp and a couple Infinity three ways in my B'cuda from them. Sounds excellent even at 65 mph with the windows down over my 3" exhausted big block! And I don't have a ton of money invested in it up
