BB in a '48 Deluxe - 08/18/20 02:39 PM

Anyone put a RB in a 1948 Dodge Deluxe? 1960 is the oldest project I ever tackled. Generally speaking, I thought that the frame rails were all to narrow.

Not sure on a 48, my 51 Plymouth would fit one no sweat. Attached is a chart with dimensions to help though.

The frame rails are not the biggest problem, the location of the steering box is. It sits inside the frame rail on the drivers side. The 48 only had an inline 6 or an inline 8 motor offered, so steering box was not an issue then. Its the "V" in a "V8" that causes a problem with the steering box. You can gain enough clearance by shifting the motor & trans towards the passenger side of the car 1 1/2" to 2" on a small block. I personally have not installed an RB into one of those cars, but its been done several times, even 1st & 2nd gen Hemis have been installed in these cars, so it can be done.

I've installed rack and pinion steering in Plymouth versions, that solves the steering box issue. Gene

One of the guys over on P15-D24.com dndrodshop has a 440 in his 48 Plymouth sedan.

He says "You can put anything in anything. I've been running a 440 RB block in my P15 sedan since 1989. I did move the firewall back a little, upgrade the brakes, change to a rack and pinion, and an 8-3/4 rear end. But I still have stock A-arm suspension.."

"Originally used the stock exhaust manifolds from the '71 New Yorker.

Now have block hugger headers from Sanderson. Ran 2-1/2" exhaust from a "box of bends" while on jack stands in my garage. (Lots of up and downs)

'71 New Yorker Tilt/telo column hooked to a Caviler (GM) rack and pinion. Made my own mounts. gave us a little steering radius but its minor and workable. Used a Rear Sump truck oil pan to allow room for the rack.

Front Shocks relocated. Photos have been posted on this site.

Power disk brakes per my article. see at dndrodshop.com
Set-back the firewall, hung the brakes on the firewall.

Made my own engine mounts and cross member for the trans.

E-body 8-3/4 rear mounted on stock P15 "never been off" springs.

Power windows, shaved door handles, keyless entry (doors & trunk), gas filler in the trunk, v-butt windshield, smoothie front bumper, rolled rear pan with no rear bumper.

Ran the stock radiator (puller fan) for several years until I won a custom radiator at a Goodguys show."

Thanks for post, nice info. I am surprised that the P15-D24 inmates let someone post anything about modifications.
I thought I was the most ignorant opinionated dumb jerk in the world until I posted over there, to much for me, I left. laugh

I don't know how long ago that was but of of the biggest perpetrators of that thinking isn;t there anymore. We tend to slap that thinking down over there these days. Heck, I'm EFI'ing my 51's flathead and I post it there without issues.

Not considered a BB, but I put 1st Gen 392 Hemi in my DeSoto. Have PS and AC.
DeSoto has more room under the hood than Plymouth or Dodge.
