Universal motor mount kits?

Universal motor mount kits? - 03/27/09 05:51 PM

I'm installing Fatman coil over front suspension in a 47 Dodge 1/2 ton and the rack and pinion steering input shaft want's to be right in the middle of the current "universal" tubular motor mount cross member.

What's your "favorite" universal motor mount brand? The engine (small Chebby) is offset to the passenger side. Yeah, I know... I already told him we need to dump the engine and get a 5.7 Hemi in there.

Why not scrap the universal tubing crossmember and mount the motor on the square tube suspension/steering crossmember?

I'm a little worried the angle would be such that the mount would apply a lot of twisting torque because it's so far behind the new cross member. I'll be boxing the frame and adding support plates to the cross member because of the gaps to the frame rails.

Here's a somewhat better pic. The original mm cross member mount bolt holes are actually further back than the pic shows. The weight of the engine would be to the rear of the new cross member by about an inch. Too much twisting torque?

when will these guys learn that a mopar belongs in a mopar, I don't care how cheap a chevy is, put it in a chevy rant over!!!!!

as far as mounts go I would use the ones from chassis engineering and if you have to, cut loose the rack mounts and aim it a little lower to go under the mount

and talk your friend into putting a mopar in it Ron....

I'd cut a 1.5" section out of that tube and weld in a piece of heavy wall tubing (perpendicular to what's there and at an angle to match the column) and allow the steering shaft to pass through it.

I agree with John Kunkel on this. The universal mount you have is redundant (not needed) given the close proximity to the one in front of it that supports your steering rack and the suspension pick-up points. You should be able to fabricate a motor mount off of your frame and / or the front cross member. The universal cross member you have is actually a transmission cross member.

Or box in the frame rails and lose the tubular piece altogether. Affix the motor mounts to the inner frame rail. It looks to me that the surrent crossmember is a little far foward to use for the mounts.
