How wide is 1940 Plymouth rearend? - 05/11/14 12:01 AM

I'm over at a buddies shop and he recently got in a 1840 Plymouth coupe. It's missing front and rear suspension and no rearend. He wants to build it up with all Mopar parts, so trying to deside what actually fit. I have a 41' Plymouth, but its 2 hour away and can't get right to it this week. Trying to see if a 1960's B/C-body rearend is the right width for it.

Or you can use the Dakota rear axle as well, you just have to watch the width of the wheels and the offset, or you may have to modify the rear fender wheel openings. Late model full sized Jeep (not the CJs) will also work.
I believe the original rear wheel track is in the 58"-60" area. 87-96 Dakota is 60" with the original narrow, inset, steel wheels. Gene

I installed a rear from a 1970 newyorker in a 38 Plymouth coupe once[it was cheap.......free ]. the tire/wheel combo used was a 15x6 chrome gm ralley type with the 10 bolt multi pattern and L78 tires which measured somewhere around 29.5 tall & 7 1/2" wide. I don't remember the backspace of the wheels, but that combo was very tight in the fender, but it had no rubbing. there was a bunch of room from the springs to the inner tire sidewall tho. a B body rear would have been a much better choice. now with that being said, my Hollander states the axles and differential parts interchange on plymouth from 37-48, so this should give you an idea of what could work for you.

Hmm, put the 9.25 out of a 79 Newport in my 38 Plymouth as well. It fit fine.

not sure if the 40 is the same width as a 47 Desoto but I put a 68 c-body 8.75 in my Desoto. it dropped in with the stock perch locations. the rears in these cars are wide, I tried(because I had them) both 65 & 69 body 8.75 rears and they were to narrow. I did have a 9.25 rear from a 79 ramcharger(any truck would work) in the car for a while and it fit too.

I put a 68 Coronet 440 wagon 8.75 in my 40.
The leaf pads had to be cut off and new ones welded on, but can run 15X8 cop car wheels. Still isn't running (back burner to other projects).

The d24/P15 website should have some solid info on exact widths.
