Trunk Divider - 11/12/12 07:39 PM

Hi Guys,
Finally getting some work done on the 34 after spending all summer on a remodel. I'm working on the trunk divider and I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what material to make it from? I was initially going to use sheet steel but now I'm wondering if I should use something lighter. The obvious next choice would be aluminum or maybe fiberglas sheet. Any other ideas?

Is this going to be a firewall, or just something to separate the trunk from the interior?

If its not a firewall, I would consider a piece of paneling or particle board. It would have enough strength to stand alone and is easy to add material to cover it up. The original 30s cars used 1/4" plywood. If it will have some reinforcing, a sheet of ABS plastic would work well, it too is easy to attach a material covering, but would probably not have enough strength to stand alone. I used ABS with a sheet metal x brace. Gene

Thanks for your input Poorboy,
As it will be a firewall of sorts I decided on using .050 aluminum. It's installed with Dzus fasteners so I can remove it easily for fuel cell and battery maintenance. Thanks again,
Arno

I was going to suggest MDF, but I realized I'm late to the party.

Thanks guys! I am sealing the two non-removable sections with 3M strip caulking. The removable sections will not be sealed. The trunk will get upholstered and should help seal it.
The fuel cell and sealed battery box are both vented outside the car. I just installed some remote jumper terminals in the trunk divider because the battery is not readily accessible. This way I can put a battery tender or jump the battery without spending 20 minutes taking the car apart.
