New project ( stock suspension 275 drag radial 72 duste - 11/16/11 04:03 AM

I bought this car for my 10 year old son, so he and I could do a project together. 1972 Gold Duster, 6/auto, California car, 22,000 original miles, all original paint, purchased as a roller. Our plans consist of a chromoly cage certified to 8.50, Dana and Calvert suspension, 4 wheel Wilwood discs, stock black interior, single turbo small block (r block) blowthrough on E-85. I cannot afford to build a competitive 275 car, but hoping to be able to race and have a BADA$$ on the street. This is our progress so far.

Nice Jody

I ALMOST bought that Duster from John before i got my Demon. It is extremely sanitary.

Folks that dont know Jody on here, he is a wonderful fabricator, mighty handy guy. Did a great job making aluminum bumper brackets on my old Duster...quality and trick work

Re: New project ( stock suspension 275 drag radial 72 duste - 11/17/11 02:55 AM

Thanks everyone, all you guys are definately some great incentive. I have no motor or trans yet, still trying to figure out the combination that I want to run. It will definately be a single turbo blowthrough small block on E-85. The goal is to keep the car very sedate looking, with alot of trick fabrication. This is a project with my son, and he has been there every time have worked on it, which is not the most efficient but that is the only way he's going to learn. I will keep the photos coming as I make progress on the cage, interior, and rear suspension. Again Thanks for the kind words. Jody

Kevin has called him on the weekend at the track just to see how everything was working. Thats #1 customer service right there!!!

Thanks for the advise on CSU, but I also have experienced Kevin's skills on a friends Chevelle. Wouldn't have a reason to go anywhere else. Purchased 3 lenghts of chromoly this week for the cage, and I am fabing up some stock looking aluminum bumper brackets. Looking for every ounce of weight savings, but only that which you can't notice. Thanks Jody

I moved them to their own album, my fault. Josh, know anyone interested in some stock appearing front bumper brackets and fender braces made out of aluminum, for a little weight savings? Not quite done yet but coming soon, I will post them when they are done. Thanks Jody

Re: New project ( stock suspension 275 drag radial 72 duste - 12/21/11 10:15 PM

Here are some bumper brackets that I have made for the Duster, wanted to save every pound I can up front. They were alot of work for a savings of 8 1/2 pounds. They could have been made alot simpler but looking factory was a must for my car. In the pics they were not quite finished, the holes for the fender braces and the holes that bolt the two brackets together have not been drilled yet. They are direct bolt ons and no modifications are required. I have an extra set in the attic if anyones interested.

My son and I have been making a little progress. The Dana and Calvert suspension are installed as well as the 4 wheel Wilwoods. The Chromoly cage is done and only a couple of interior pieces are holding us up from having that completed. He has been way more enthused than I expected and has even encouraged me on nights that I might not have went to the garage. Thanks for looking, Jody.

Fantastic! Same route I'm going with my superbee except I'm going twins and a BB. Right down to the wheels! Nice job and great memories with your son! I like the idea of not being a full out competitive race car...I've got the same mentality. Bad ass street car and if I win a race or 2 at the track, so be it. In be in for a set of those aluminum brackets for my 68 dart as well as my superbee if your thinking about making a run of em. Rears too.

Thanks everyone for the encouraging words. Superbeeman69, no plans are in the near future for another batch of brackets, but I already have templates for a Superbee, so you never know. 6PKRTSE, based on your cage I think you are planning on going a little faster than I am. That car looks great with the interior and cage the same color as the car. I have always liked them that way, but this car is the wrong color combination to do that with. I didn't really like the tan interior, I thought the car looked to washed out and needed some contrast so black it was. As far as being done first, probably not because I don't have a motor or trans yet. I'm just trying to get the car completely done as a roller before I buy a motor and keeping my eyes open for the right deal during this time. I go to Milan about twice a month, how about you? Jody

I think a tan cage would of looked awesome. Of course black always does to. My cage just got certed for the 25.5 cert for 7.50's.
Same here, I have the expensive part left too. The drivetrain. I also go to Milan numerous times a month. Every Heads Up Night, No ET & most of the Saturday Holbrook Shoot out days. We should all meet up one of these times out there because I am tired of hanging out with all of these Ford & Chevy weenies because they can afford to race because all of their stuff is cheaper. LOL

I agree, helping my Dad out all of the time in the garage has some fond memories too. I get my kids out there to help me whenever they can. My daughter even used to help but now she is getting into boy's. I'll just have to teach the boyfriends a thing or two now when they come over.

The front seat covers are on, package tray done, doors are off and being painted on the inside so the interior can be finished up. Back window is now in but I cracked the windshield when I was cleaning it up and need to find one. Re: New project ( stock suspension 275 drag radial 72 duste - 09/13/12 09:44 PM

Thanks guys, basically the a pillar install involves a full page discription and pics that I don't have. They were installed through the windshield opening then through the dash and then rotated into meet the halo. Notice the dash pad is not knotched but has a through hole. The rear seat was put in the car before the cage was welded to the floor. The front seat was disassembled and the seat bottom went in under the door bar and the seat backs were installed in the car. Hope this helps, Jody

Thanks guys, not a whole lot of progress lately, just collecting pieces and saving for the motor. I got the removable chute mount installed, and the kill switch. Not so sure on the front spoiler but the longer I look at it the more it grows on me. The rear wheels are heading to Champion soon for a beadlock conversion and the front suspension will come out so I can modify the k-member and powdercoat it. Don't really have any new pictures, I will probably wait until the snow is gone. Here are a few of the most recent pics I have.

I used the offset shackle and hangers from Mopar which gain you 3/4". I also had to move the rearend back 5/8" to make room for the height of the 275/60/15. My wheels are 10" with 4 1/2 backspace which probably doesn't help anyone because the housing is custom made to the width that I needed. I made a test housing out of 3" tubing and some mock axle ends to get the width perfect and then gave that to DTS.

I am steadily leaning toward fuel injection just so I can keep the hood. Nothing against them but I don't want a black hood and matching the patina of the original paint would be very tough. Will be more money but worth it, in my eyes. Thanks Jody

Neither are totally finished yet and I'm not sure what you are looking for , but here are some pics. I left the trunk bars unwelded to this point because I may have to spread them a little for a fuel cell mount between them. The cell mount and the battery mount still need to be fabbed. All the pads on the car were mig welded to the floor or subframe. As bad as these Dusters rusted out you would think there was not alot of galvanizing on the metal, until you light a tig torch one time. There is not alot of room under the car for a chute mount so I used the space between the spare tire well and the rear body panel. The reciever tube spans between the two subframe rails around the spare tire well. The rear body panel was notched out for tubing clearance. If you look through the voids in the bumper you can see the chute reciever is welded continiously to the rear body panel and the pads on the inside of the subframe still need to be welded. Pull the half inch bolt and the chute is removable.

Re: New project ( stock suspension 275 drag radial 72 duste - 01/01/13 07:53 PM

not sure if you know this.....BUT get a good scraper and get all that seam sealer out of the trunk area. Mopar liked to put that seam sealer over bare metal and if its not rusted under there yet....it soon will be. Get rid of the original seam sealer, use a good primer and re seal if you want,.

Car looks great too....

If doing that much work, why not a minitub? and move the springs in.
I know you running a 275, but move the springs and minitub, you can fit a 10.5w or even 315 radial on there if wanted

Hey Tony, how are you and your son doing? I grew up in a body shop, my dad is a bodyman and is still going at 66 years old. We thought long and hard about what direction to go with this car. I am definitely NOT a purist but I also know how hard it is to find an original paint car that has 100% untouched paint, I looked for almost two years. Most of them have been touched up here or there. I am a fabricator for a living so the mini tub route is not a problem for me if I decided to go that way. I am not very proud of the way this car looks in the trunk, sealer wise. But I'm very proud of the fact that it is untouched. I also know there could be ALOT of weight saved on the car and I don't want to sacrifice the integrity of the car. Had I found a little rougher car to start with, it would be lighter and gutted and minitubbed, and faster in the end. But it is what it is. Now go ahead and call me a hypocrite for trying to save my original paint car buy putting a cage in it, you won't be the first. I know that I won't be competitive in the Josh's events with this car, I just want to get it into the eights and I would be happy.

Doing well, just need a lil push to get our winter projects on trac...LOL
I understand keeping as much of the original paint intact, but id still protect all that bare metal in the trunk under that seam sealer.
No one can see in there that its NOT original paint,,,LOL

Awesome car, man. The lengths you are going to to preserve the original details are impressive.

Did you have any issues with the Caltracs and the front offset spring hanger? If so, how did you handle it? Pics?

I did'nt have any trouble with anything. I did put a 5/8" spacer block in between the perch and the front hanger to move the rearend back for tire clearance. This required the clearance hole in the side of the subframe that captures the nut on the hanger to be elongated. I also had to press the studs out of the hanger and install longer bolts. Not really any troubles with it at all. What issues did you have?

I have not had issues myself (yet) but I have read on here that the offset front spring hanger needs to be clearanced if you want to use the top hole in the Cal Trac triangulated pivot.

Just curious about it since I am going to be doing that install myself soon (Cal Tracs/offset springs).

I guess I totally forgot about that, so I went out in the garage and looked. It appears that I did modify the bottom of the hanger by mitering them for clearance. Sorry, I'm a fabricator for a living so doing something like that just does'nt stick with me.

I appreciate it, that gives me incentive to get it done. This car will never be for sale as long as I'm alive. The car belongs to my son, we make the decisions, we do the work, and I have to front the bill. For all the good times we have in the garage while he is young enough that he still likes me, its a small price to pay. Thanks Jody

Re: New project ( stock suspension 275 drag radial 72 duste - 02/05/13 01:10 AM

Finally another missing piece to the puzzle has been found. Haven't had much progress lately other than saving some money. Now I can start all over again with that. My son and I just got this put out back in the shop. It is an Arrington R3 short deck W8 358 c.i. ex Craftsman Truck motor that originally came from Brad Keslowski. It has been converted to a wet sump by the previous owner, has Bryant billet crank, Carrillo rods, Diamond pistons, .760" solid roller, new Jesel roller lifters, Jesel titanium rocker set up, titanium valves, and has just been freshened. I will have to take some compression out of it, put a turbo grind cam in it, and probably change the exhaust valves from ti to inconel. It was all the right pieces I was looking for, and for the right price.

Re: New project ( stock suspension 275 drag radial 72 duste - 04/26/13 09:28 PM

Progess seems slow lately. I have fabbed some mock up mid and motor plates knowing that they will have to be cut on. So after I modify them I will laser cut the final product. The engine is in place and was lowered 1" and still could not come up with enough hood clearance for a blowthrough set up. We are now going fuel injected so I can keep my original paint flat hood. With the 6061.com shorty elbow we have 3/8" clearance to the hood. I have also purchased almost all of the pieces to build the headers. The IC Engine Works mock up header kit has already saved me some money, verses cutting and tacking elbows only to change my design two or three times. Hoping to have the headers tacked upto the collectors within the next couple of weeks or so.

So does a 60mm cam core alow for enough LSA for a turbo motor?
Posted By: LA360

Re: New project ( stock suspension 275 drag radial 72 duste - 04/29/13 01:33 AM

It would probably be a custom core, although a lot of the Comp Eliminator stuff would be running 60mm camshafts with 112 + lobe separation angles.
I would imagine this engine has a 50mm core anyway
Posted By: Darryls-Demon

Re: New project ( stock suspension 275 drag radial 72 duste - 04/29/13 02:07 AM

Seems I remember Ryan J having issues getting enough LSA out of those cam cores when he was biulding his turbo motor.
I think the 9.0 blocks use 60mm cams and the taller blocks use 50mm.
Posted By: LA360

Re: New project ( stock suspension 275 drag radial 72 duste - 04/29/13 11:38 AM

The only blocks that I recall having the the 60mm tunnel were the 2.25" main blocks. As far as I know the Craftsman truck stuff had the 50mm roller tunnel. My R3 that I had was 318 main with a 50mm unnel and a 9" deck.
Sorry for the hijack

Post some pics of yours.
There is a big difference in port shape and size from a 318 head to an Arrington cnc'd W8. My primarys are 2" because they have to be 1 7/8 i.d. I didn't really take the easy route, I took the only route. Just sayin.

Thank you, all donuts have the same clr as the diameter of the said donut. I used a total of four donuts, the rear tubes on both sides are the only mandrel bent tubes on the headers. The donuts are 10 times nicer to fit up than the mandrel bends because they are very round. The mandrel bends have been stretched on the outside of the radius and become ovaled which makes the fit bad. And yes they are the tightest clr you can get. Jody

A few updated pictures. We have made the final motor and mid plate and the mounts for both. The transmission is installed and trans mount should be done tomorrow. Ended up trimming the front fender for the 5" exhaust as it seemed to low before. I finally took the doors off and painted the inside of them to match the interior, and installed the quick release for the wheel. The harness and chute came from Impact and are installed. Sent the wheels out to Champion to get the beadlocks installed. It seems like along way to go but the "to do" list is getting shorter. Thanks Jody
